UMR fall tournament November 4

Post by DeckardCain »

The University of Missouri-Rolla's Academic Competition Organization would like to invite you to the 2nd Annual Fall High School Tournament, to be held on our scenic campus in Rolla, MO. The tournament will be held on November 4th, 2006; we are limiting the tournament to the first 16 teams that show interest (second teams from schools will only be used if we have less than 16 schools). The field will not be split by divisions. This tournament will follow college rules (20 tossups with 20 non-rebounding boni, with a standard college question distribution), and the questions will be house-written as in the past.

Base fee: $50
If you bring a buzzer: -$5
If you bring a moderator: -$5
If we have borrowed your buzzer during the past year for a collegiate event: -$5
If you have an alumnus on the UMR team: -$5
If you drove over 100 miles: -$5
If you drove over 200 miles: -$10
Minimum amount: $25
Copies of the questions used: $10 (on top of the entry fee)
Second team: $35 (this is on top of what the first team's cost would be)

Please e-mail me at mwcbp3@umr.edu to sign up. Registration will begin at 8:15 a.m. on the morning of the tournament, and play will begin at 9:00 a.m. Keep in mind a team consists of eight players; if you bring more than eight you will be charged for two teams. Also, two weeks before the tournament your teams will be frozen, meaning if you need to drop a team after this deadline you are still responsible for paying for it.

We will also be holding our annual spring tournament on March 3rd, 2007. This tournament follows standard MSHSAA rules and will be capped at 32 teams. The pricing structure will be the same as for our fall tournament, and teams that attend both tournaments will have their entry fee discounted by ten dollars. More information will be sent out at a later date, but if you wish to sign up for this tournament now, you are more than welcome to do so.

Please do not hesitate to e-mail me if you have any questions. We’re looking forward to seeing you and your team this season!

Sincerely,
Matt Chadbourne
President, UMR Academic Competition Organization

Getting nostalgic, Bill?

For Matt: I'll try to talk Mr. Allen into going to this one. Before we decide, though, could we see the questions from last year? If so, my email is somewhere on my profile here.

Nah,

just that is pretty much the same form we have been sending out since my sophomore year. With all the problems that has come up over the years built in.

If your tournament has standard college question distribution, does that mean almost no math?

I wont give out the exact number but since the questions are house written and we know MO HS quiz bowl is math heavy (that and UMR is an engineering school) we include more math than your standard college set. (well NAQT I. Sets have 2-3 math questions out of 24 total questions).

so it's probably up to MSHSAA percentages (as in math propbably is 1/5 of the questions)?

I thought MSHSAA distribution was 1/5 math, as the manual states ten math tossups and four math bonuses, which out of fifty tossups and twenty bonuses is 1/5.

What Bill is saying is that instead of having 20% math, they are probably less than 10% math in UMR's packet.

Charlie: I believe I've got a couple rounds on my other computer... I'll check it out.

I really didn't see much use in changing the letter much... it says what it needs to say. But I did clean it up a bit.

Just curious, but I am planning an excursion to Rolla to get some "Slice of Pie", and I wondered if Rolla hosted a college bowl tournament. If so, I wondered if I could go maverick or just have some guys tag along for fun from Mizzou?

Sounds like a great field. If I remember correctly Katelin said that Liberty has a scheduling conflict that day, although they will hopefully be coming to the spring tournament.

Two things strike me in the field

Lots of schools coming back...which means we have been doing something right.
and

We seem to get 3-4 new schools for each tournament, which to me means the schools that enjoy our tournament tell other schools about it.

matt and I noticed it the other day... that is why we made a push for the 4th school. If NKC and Ladue(which might be hard without Jason) pan out. This could be the toughest field for a tournament all season.

This is pretty damn (can I say that? If not, edit out please) exciting, in my opinion. I expect it to be one of the best tournaments of the year because of the field. And I've read some of last year's questions and they're good.

After a slight adjustment, the field now stands thus:

Clarkton
Cuba
Eureka
Hancock
Helias
Higbee
Ladue
North Kansas City
Owensville
Poplar Bluff
Richland
Rockwood Summit
Salem
Savannah
Sedalia Smith-Cotton
Thomas Jefferson
Vienna
Waynesville

Should be an outstanding tournament.

Narrowing in to the tournament date. Place your bets people.

My pick is Savannah and LHW (in a surprise dark horse performance) duking it out for the championships. I really can't decipher LHW this year, but I have this nasty feeling they're going to remain phenomenal.

I think on the local scene they are going to parallel Richard Montgomery in Maryland.

I disagree with that assessment Chuq... Ladue was awesome because of Jason Wu. Though there were others that could compliment his knowledge with random tidbits, he was the center of the team. That said, comparing a rebuilding team to that of RM is a bit crazy. They were 3/4 of the starting Panasonic team from Maryland... dual national championships... that's more than could be said for any team in any state at this point in the season.

First off: Chris Ray was the only Richard Montgomery player on the Pansonic team. Also, the comparison I'm making is to Richard Montgomery this year. Everyone seemed to expect Richard M. to lose lots of talent with Chris Ray graduating (i.e. R.M. would be rebuilding) and then they started playing and it turns out they are quite possibly even better than they were last year because there's no dominant player anymore. Chris Ray covered up what his team knew (and negged some out) and I'm tempted to say something similiar to that could happen to Ladue.
Also, I'll add that momentum can't hurt. They won state last year, and their coaches seem like they know what their doing. Until I see otherwise at Rolla, I'm going to remain wary of LHW.

I was getting uncertain of myself so I checked on the team Maryland thing.

Jeff Cao, Montgomery Blair
David Chen, Thomas Wooton
Zach Klitzman, Walt Whitman
Alex Price, Walter Johnson
Rajib Quabili, Paint Branch
Chris Ray, Richard Montgomery

I can understand where the confusion can come in (all the high school names sound the same to me). Also I should note that Alex Price from Walter Johnson is the dirty art kid.
And people need to stop complaining about some kind of Panasonic area bias (which is nonexistant) in Missouri: On Maryland's team every single player was in the same school district.
