Cross-posting from hsquizbowl:
naqt.com wrote: NAQT is pleased that its 2015 High School National Championship Tournament will showcase the first quiz bowl match in which a computer goes thumb-to-thumb against a team of humans.

On Saturday evening, a team of researchers will debut its computerized question-answering system (QANTA) in a tossup-only competition against four NAQT staffers. Unlike other question answering systems that are allowed to see the entire question at once (e.g., IBM Watson of Jeopardy! fame), this system decides when it has enough information to answer a question and is thus able to handle quiz bowl-style tossup questions.

Prior to the exhibition game, Jordan Boyd-Graber and his colleagues from the University of Colorado and the University of Maryland will describe the state-of-the-art machine learning research that went into the system and how interested students can get involved by using and improving the open-source system. Jordan is himself a former quiz bowl player for Caltech and Princeton.

The talk will start at 8:00 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom with the exhibition game to follow.

At least two of the human players have ample Jeopardy! success, including the lone survivor of the board from Hell last March.

Going into lunch, Hallsville A is 3-1, Rock Bridge A 2-2. I only have partial record for the others since the stats seem to be a bit behind. Which for 272 teams it's a miracle they're this far along!

Savannah is 3-1 after an OT win. Their one loss came in a very close and well played game against perennial WUHSAC attendee, Ransom Everglades A.

Helias finished 5-5, from what Jeff said online. I also believe every team from Missouri won at least one game. Great job representing our state, everybody!

Another huge congratulations to William Gentry from St. Joseph Central, who finished #41 individually with 63.29 points per 20 tossups, making him not only the second highest scoring individual from Missouri, but also the top freshman Rising Star! I don't believe any of the top 30 overall tournament All-Stars were freshmen, so that should make William the top freshman in the nation at HSNCT!

Exactly 150 individuals finished with at least 40 points per 20 tossups heard. Other Missourians finishing in the top 150 individuals were Jared Lockwood from Hallsville at #46 with 60.99 PP20, Will Graff from Park Hill South at #121 with 43.72 PP20, Alex Harmata from Hickman at #131 with 42.06 PP20, Tim Haynes from Liberty North at #140 with 41.38 PP20, and Robby Schmidt from Rock Bridge A at #149 at 40.10 PP20.

Looks like William's performance earned him a nomination for 9th grade player of the year at the National Quizbowl Awards!

Congratulations, William!
