2017 HSAPQ NASAT

Post by Jeffrey Hill »

The HSAPQ National All-Star Academic Tournament at the University of Kentucky is in progress. MOQBA is sponsoring two Missouri teams this year!

Team Missouri A is:
  • Alex Donovan, Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School junior (first NASAT)
  • Raj Paul, Ladue Horton Watkins High School sophomore (first NASAT)
  • Cole Phinney, Washington High School senior (first NASAT)
  • Joe Stitz, Washington High School senior (second NASAT)
Team Missouri B is:
  • Matt Chalem, Washington High School senior (first NASAT)
  • Ganon Evans, Francis Howell High School High School junior (first NASAT)
  • William Gentry, (St. Joseph) Central High School junior (first NASAT)
  • Spencer Johnson, Washington High School senior (first NASAT)
There are a total of 25 teams from 15 states participating:
  • Alabama (3 teams)
  • California
  • Florida
  • Georgia (2 teams)
  • Illinois (2 teams)
  • Kentucky
  • Maryland (3 teams)
  • Michigan
  • Missouri (2 teams)
  • Nevada
  • New York
  • Ohio (2 teams)
  • Pennsylvania (2 teams)
  • Texas (2 teams)
  • Virginia
The teams were divided into three pools of six and a pool of seven to play prelims in rounds 1-7. Teams in the pool of seven had one bye and teams in the pool of six had two. The top 3 in each pool advanced to a 12 team crossover playoff (rounds 8-16), while the rest advanced to a 13 team crossover playoff (9 or 10 games over rounds 8-18). The top bracket has finals and tiebreakers afterward.

Missouri A went 4-1 to finish second in their preliminary pool, including an incredible come from behind victory over Ohio A to snap a five game losing streak against them dating back to 2013! They carried over a 1-1 record and went 2-4 in the playoff rounds played on Saturday, putting them at 3-5. Tomorrow they will play Illinois B (2-6), Georgia B (1-7), and Pennsylvania A (1-7).

Missouri B went 2-3 to finish fourth in their preliminary pool. A 200-180 loss to 3-2 Georgia B was how narrowly Missouri B missed making the top bracket. They carried over a 2-0 record and went 3-3 in the playoff rounds played on Saturday, putting them at 5-3. Tomorrow they will play Kentucky (3-5), Texas B (4-3), Ohio B (4-4), and Maryland C (5-3).

Live scoresheets are available for Missouri A's games! (Missouri B's round 4 game against Alabama A is also available.)

Actually only a three year losing streak to Ohio -- Missouri '13 lost to them on Saturday but then beat them in a Sunday rematch.

Congrats and good luck!

Oops, completely forgot there was a rematch and didn't look at the stats carefully enough to catch that - thanks. It was a four game losing streak ('14, '15 twice, '16) and five of the six matches from 2013-2016 with at least one loss each year.
