Post 2018 BRIC - Mexico HS, 17th March
The members of Mexico High School Scholar Bowl welcome your team to join others from across the region at the second Bulldog Regional Interscholastic Challenge (BRIC), scheduled for March 17th, 2018. BRIC will consist of a minimum of eight games for all teams in a modified NAQT/national format:
  • Each game shall consist of two halves of ten tossups each, with each correct tossup followed by a three-part bonus.
  • Correct tossup answers are ten points each. All tossups are five seconds, and there are no math computation tossups.
  • We will NOT assess a five-point penalty for interrupting the moderator during the tossup with an incorrect answer.
  • The team that receives the bonus will have five seconds to answer each part. The moderator will prompt after four seconds. In the event a bonus part is computation, the team will receive 10 seconds to answer instead of 15.
  • Each incorrect bonus part will immediately rebound, with the rebounding team expected to provide an answer within three seconds. Unless otherwise specified in a bonus set, each bonus part shall be ten points each.
  • In the event a game is tied after regulation, additional tossups shall be read until the next change in score.
  • Each team shall have one 30 second timeout per half. Substitutions, scorechecks, and team conferences may occur at the half, prior to overtime, or during any timeout called by either team. (Note: per a change in MSHSAA rules, teams must use a timeout to request a scorecheck other than at halftime or the end of regulation.)
  • Teams rosters shall be limited to seven players; schools are encouraged to bring junior varsity and “B” teams to compete. Teams may play with fewer than four players. Rosters shall be submitted in advance and finalized at registration the morning of the tournament. Players may not change teams during the tournament.

We have secured the Illinois Masonic set. More information is available at http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewto ... 09&t=20350. At present there are no other tournaments in Missouri using this set; should one be announced you will not be able to attend that tournament if you attend BRIC. Additionally, we are currently limiting the field to 18 teams; this may expand depending on staff availability. Additional teams will be placed on a waitlist and contacted should an opening occur.

Unlike last year, no roster restrictions will be in place. Therefore we anticipate BRIC serving as a qualifier for the PACE National Scholastic Championship in Chicago.

Teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for at least three afternoon games. This setup is subject to change, depending on the number of teams signed up. We plan to start the team meeting at 8:30 a.m., with the first round set for at 8:50 a.m. and afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. With the exception of any playoff games for trophies, we anticipate the last game ending around 4 p.m.

Fee structure is as follows, per school:
  • First team: $65
  • Additional teams: $60
  • Discount for travelling more than 100 miles each way (determined by Google Maps): $10
  • Discount for providing a working buzzer set: $5 (maximum $10)
  • Discount for providing competent staff: $5 per staffer (maximum $10)
All discounts are subject to the discretion of tournament officials.

Mexico High School is located at 639 N Wade Street, in the northwestern part of the city. Plans are to have lunch available in the cafeteria, with proceeds benefiting Audrain County Relay for Life. If you wish you venture off campus for lunch, most options will be along Highway 22 and in the downtown area.

The tournament is under the direction of Mexico High School Coach Dale Schenewerk and veteran scholar bowl moderator Kyle Hill of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, an organization dedicated to promoting quality scholar bowl tournaments around the state. We anticipate receiving certification and assistance from their membership.

To register for this tournament, please visit http://tinyurl.com/2018MexicoBRIC. Questions concerning the tournament may be directed to either Dale Schenewerk at dschenewerk@mexico.k12.mo.us or Kyle Hill at kyle@hillonline.net. Please include “2018 BRIC” in the subject line.

We look forward to seeing you at Mexico High School on March 17th.

The Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence has granted Gold Certification for BRIC. At present the top 20% of teams in the field will receive bids to the National Scholastic Championship, June 2nd & 3rd in Reston, Virginia. However, it is possible that we may be able to upgrade our tournament to platinum, allowing the top 25% to qualify.

Eight spots are still available! Hope to see you at Mexico HS on March 17th!

We're just over two weeks away from BRIC, and we have one spot available. If you don't have a tournament scheduled for the 17th and are looking for a prime competitive opportunity in East Central Missouri, Mexico is the place to be that Saturday!

Teams in the field, we'll send out the fortnightly this weekend.

Stats: CombinedPrelimsPlayoffs

A huge thank you to everyone who competed, staff, or otherwise took part in today's Bulldog Regional Interscholastic Challenge. A three-way tie atop the playoff pool resulted in a two-game playoff seeded by points, which resulted in Moberly A and Helias facing off for the chance to face Parkway West. Moberly edged Helias for that spot, then avenged their Round 5 loss to defeat Parkway West 270-210 and claim the tournament title. The Spartans were led by Eric Thompson and Brennan Sapp, who ranked second & fourth individually. Congratulations to Nick Erickson of Jefferson City for leading all scorers with 90 points per prelim match.

The success of BRIC would not have been possible without our staff: community members Brian Baker and Dale Schenewerk Sr, Kathy Brandon of Moberly, Shelly Kiesling of Jefferson City, Louis Schnoebelen of Fulton, Amy Sternke and Yudsara from Hannibal, Mexico alumni Caleb Harlan and Lauren Ransom, MHS staff Walter Hollis, Kaitlin Hopke, Julie Tucker and Lindsey Yancey. I also want to thank my MOQBA colleague Sean Phillips for reading the finals and helping with several behind-the-scenes aspects of the day. I especially want to thank Brandon Moore of Centralia for stepping in on short notice to serve as a moderator and do so most professionally and brilliantly.

I again am appreciative of the opportunity to work with Mexico Head Coach Dale Schenewerk on this year's BRIC, as well as the staff & administration at Mexico Schools allowing us to stage the Bulldog Regional Interscholastic Challenge for a second year, and further expand playing opportunities for teams across the state. We welcome suggestions to improve next year's BRIC and how we can make next year's trip to the Brick City even better.

We also want to thank the volunteers with the Mexico Go-Gitters team of Audrain County Relay for Life who ran today's concession stand and lunch counter. We will learn early next week how much was raised for their team.

Again I close with the benediction of my late freshman journalism adviser: "Be Safe, Be Smart!"
