2019 Belton After-School Invitational Challenge (BASIC)

Post by BeltonSBCoach »

Belton After-School Invitational Classic (BASIC)
High school tournament on March 14, 2019
Host location: Belton High School

Address: 801 W. North Ave., Belton, Missouri 64012

Question Set: Reinstein 2019

Field cap: 16 teams (preferential acceptance to schools which participated in 2018)

Belton High School is very pleased to announce that we will hold our second annual scholar bowl tournament, the Belton After-School Invitational Challenge (I guess that makes us BASIC), Thursday, March 14, 2019. It will be held at Belton High School, 801 W. North Ave., in Belton, MO. We would be honored if you’d join us for a fun evening of competition.

Team check-in and registration will begin at 3:20 p.m. in the BHS commons, and we hope to be underway with the first round of action by 3:50 p.m (after a brief team meeting at 3:40). Our aim is that the tournament will conclude for all teams at around 8:30 p.m.

This tournament will offer each team six rounds of 20 toss-up questions with rebounding bonuses. The question set we’re using does not indicate powers, so we will not offer powers or penalize for incorrect interruptions. We are using the Illinois Masonic Series question set for this tournament. This is the same question set to be used March 16 in Mexico, MO (BRIC). If you’re attending that tournament, avoid the conflict of participating in this tournament. More information about the set is available at http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewto ... 09&t=20350.

We are opening up the tournament to only 16 teams with no opportunity for adding more. Schools that entered in 2018 will be given preferential acceptance in the tournament with an on-time entry request. Only MSHSAA member high schools (or affiliates registered for scholar bowl) may attend. Schools may enter one or two teams (not more). Schools that enter two teams will be placed on opposite sides of the seeding pools. Each team may have six players per team (four active and two alternates).

Each team will be placed in a four-team, round-robin pool for preliminary play. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the championship pools after dinner (for 1st through 8th place), and the remaining teams will stay to play three games in consolation pools (9th through 16th place). Ties will be settled using points per game and points per bonus (excluding rebounds).

Every team will play six games. To make sure that all teams are able to participate in all games offered, please make sure that if you register that you intend to compete in six matches, including consolation.

The top three teams in the tournament and the top eight individual scorers (after three rounds of preliminary play) will earn awards.

The price is $55 per team. We will offer one discount per school of $5 for a second team, $10 for allowing use of a functional buzzer system, and $10 for an experienced, approved moderator (maximum discount $25 per school).

Since our dinner break will be only about 35 minutes, we will provide dinner on site for just $5 per person. There will not be ample time to drive into town to any of the dining establishments during the short break as a team. Our dinner will consist of tossed salad with choice of dressing, pizza, a drink (either soda or bottled water), and a dessert. To help us with meal counts, we need teams to pre-pay (or at least pre-order) this as a part of your enrollment. For every six meal tickets purchased in advance, we will provide one for free for a coach, driver, etc.

To register for our tournament, simply fill out the Google Form here: http://tinyurl.com/BASIC2019Registration (Link will be active 11/1/2018)

We will then send you an invoice to the email address provided.

Thanks for your interest in our tournament. If you have any questions, please contact James Carter at jcarter@bsd124.org or Kyle Hill (MOQBA), who is assisting as co-tournament director, at kyle@hillonline.net. We look forward to being your gracious hosts March 14.

We had 22 teams take part tonight. (Long story as to why we had to move it to today.) We utilized four pools of 5-6 teams, with the top team in each pool playing off for the top three trophies. Remaining teams played one placement game against a team that finished in a similar position in a neighboring pool. Because of concerns that we might not wrap up at a decent hour, we utilized timed halves of 13 minutes per half in what we believe was the first tournament in Western Missouri to implement such a clock. Most rooms were able to get all 20 tossups in, along with the rebounding bonus.

Congratulations to St Pius A for coming from behind to beat Lee's Summit North and win BASIC. Lee's Summit West A defeated Raymore-Peculiar for third. Ray-Pec's Joel Myers led all individual scorers with 86 points per 20 tossups heard. Formal stats will be uploaded at a later date, but for now, here are PDFs of the results:
