Sullivan Academic Tournament - 2/2/19

Post by Jason Loy »

Hello coaches,

I am pleased to announce that Sullivan High School will be hosting a tournament on February 2, 2019. All students in grades 9-12 are eligible. We will be using NAQT's SSNCT-18 set; if your team has played or is planning to play this set at the 2018 Small School National Championship or at Glendale or Lee's Summit West. The top 15% of the field will qualify for the 2019 NAQT High School National Championship Tournament. We encourage both varsity and JV teams to attend, although there will be only one combined division.

We will begin play at 9:00 am, and we ask that teams arrive by 8:30. The exact tournament format will be determined after the number of teams in the field has been finalized. Each team will be guaranteed at least eight rounds.

The field will initially be capped at eighteen teams, but we will do everything possible to accommodate all interested teams.

The fee structure is as follows:

Base fee: $65 per team
Additional team from each school: $60 per team
Buzzer system discount: -$5 per system, limit 3 (must work for eight players)
Scorekeeper discount: -$5
Moderator discount: $-15 (must be pre-approved)

To register, please email me at loyj@sullivaneagles.org with the number of teams, buzzer systems, and number/type (moderator or scorekeeper) of staff that you plan to bring. Having this information at registration will help us secure enough staff to accommodate as many interested teams as possible. Spots in the tournament will be granted on a first-come, first served basis; teams beyond the initial field cap of eighteen will be placed on a waitlist until we are confident that we will have enough space and staff to expand.

We look forward to seeing you in February!

Ok so ordinarily I’d be falling over with praise for the director of today’s event at Sullivan and his school and their staff. And they do deserve praise and they were great. However that wasn’t the point of what went down.

I think today they will forgive me. Because something extraordinary happened. There were 30 teams and one winner. It was a person playing solo. For the first time in moqba history that person was female. What’s more extraordinary is, she is 13.

It was truly an honor to read her matches. I get these “Star is born” moments now and again but wow after 23 years I’m still knocked on my ass when I see it. Congrats to all but wow just wow.
