MSHSAA State Records and Such

Post by Jeffrey Hill »

Let me know if you see any errors or if there were any additional records broken of which I am not aware. Note that MSHSAA has basically stopped updating the program since around 2007 so there are likely a few entries missing, particularly for statistics that can't be determined from game scores. The known records for these categories are now displayed in gray to make it clear that the data is not up to date.

Jimmy Li will be in the high scorers list with 101, as will Travis Eakin with whatever he had. (87?) He also holds the Class 1 record now, as well as the single game record, I believe.

Travis Eakin has the new Class 1 individual scoring record I think. He had 17 per game for 5 games. That would make a total of 85 questions for him.

Jimmy Li should be 5th on the All-Class tossups with 100 total.

I doubt anybody broke the record in the championship game. It was pretty low-scoring for that.

Jeff, boni percentages and numbers are based on initial attempts only. Make sure those numbers are right... and once again a modest and relatively harmess curse upon Tall Paul and Montgomery County for having a better percentage than us two years ago despite answering 10 fewer!!

I knew that already - for a second I thought our bonus percent didn't make it because I had included our 1/7 rebounds. Yes, we did have 37 correct initial bonuses.

We need to get Eakin on here too, he is going to be a legend, and maybe some WCA people too. But that might piss David off, hey David, nice beard if I read the pics right. Are you going to turn into a mane?

What about Parkway's percentage? TJI got onto the list with a measly 9-for-12 last year.

One quick note on the Class 1 single-game scoring record. Travis Eakin scored 21 in the consolation game against North Shelby (I know since I kept score for it), which would be a record. However, Travis may have scored even more in another game or even Nathaniel Russell from St. Joe Christian may have had a huge game.

I transposed the huge school history table into Excel and added 2005 data. I'll post it after State so that it is complete with 2006 data. This is what you get when all I pretty much have left of school is the DiffEq final.

I was definitely more surprised by this statistic than I should have been - (only) 9 teams have won multiple titles. But when you consider all 40 championship titles in the past 10 years, only 16 teams have won, so over half of the teams that have ever won a championship have won multiple times.
------The preceding text is as of 2006-----

Teams with MSHSAA Championship Titles 1996-2009 (20)
13 - Richland
6 - North Kansas City, Thomas Jefferson Independent
5 - Mound City
4 - Savannah
3 - Cuba
2 - Koshkonong, Ladue, Liberty, Nixa, Priory
1 - Bernie, Boonville, Central (Cape Girardeau), John Burroughs, Notre Dame (Cape Girardeau), Parkway Central, Salem, Tarkio, Westminster Christian

OK, the records list has been updated for any records missed that appeared in the program, as well as the few records set this year. It looks like WCA's 540 game against Macon may be the only 2006 record that will make it into next year's program.

Oh, and here's that cumulative Excel spreadsheet I mentioned above.

I played a 60-tossup-per-game tournament in 8th grade, and got 214 tossups in seven games (307 points per game!), including 36 in one. I was helped in that respect by a lack of helpful teammates. The game in which I got 36 tossups ended up with a score of 360-130, actually...

Unfortunately, none of that matters, and I'll never come close to that in high school.

I have absolutely no idea, and unless Nate and Corey took count every game, they probably shouldnt know either since all-state only did prelim stats for some reason.

Actually, I do know. I had a total of 75 for the state tournament last year. Not quite the 18/game I was given credit for, but a respectable 15/game.

Terin Budine, Savannah, Class 3.....................................................45
Troy Hubbard, Barstow, Class 2.......................................................44
Micah Manary, St. Louis Univ. High, Class 4...................................43

So by my count Cory and I will get added to the program, and Nate should probably get edited into the little area for 65 and above in Jeff's first post here.

625 Westminster vs. ND (Cape), Class 3, 1st Rd. 2004
620 Savannah vs. ND (Cape), Class 3, Semifinal, 2004

I just wanted to point that out.... pretty much my favourite accomplishment from high school.

NKC's score of 450 in the championship has been added. Any other known records, or any from 2007 in the program that we missed?

They said I got 97 tossups, and David Westrich said he got 81. Terin got more then him but they didn't announce how many for some reason. As a side note, I'd hazard a guess that with 300 points, Kirksville has the highest score of a losing team ever in a state final.

In 2003 Liberty beat Parkway Central 410-380 (highest combined score ever maybe?). Also looks like PCH also lost to Cape Central 375-310 in 2002 (which I believe is the only year in which the Liberty/NKC district did not make the finals, as Liberty ended up 5th after the morning rounds).

If that holds up (and it very well might not since I originally had 101 which was later downgraded to 99), thank you Charlie for finally making it to where I am no longer neighbors with Mueller on the list. Unfortunately, your name will have to sit next to his for awhile.

So it looks like we also got 2285 total points, which makes for next to Richland 2001 on the sheet.

Good call... I didn't bother to add any of the total scores up, especially since nobody broke 500 all day. Guess scoring at least 400 in every game and 450 or higher in 4 of your 5 games would put you up there after all, wouldn't it? Next highest appears to be Kirksville with 1960.

Yeah, our scoring was bizarrely consistent no matter how good the other team was.

Terin had 95 total toss ups for the day with 21 in the final round (the score I did not have at the awards ceremony).

Somewhere on this board a long time ago, I posted the championship matches from the old MAA State tournaments (1992-'95). Should I post those again?

Yes! That one. :)

I went back and added and edited some information to that post. I still remember a lot of things from that first state title. I wish I could repeat what Sean once said to me about that.

I just posted some edits to my post of all of the old MAA State information I have. It makes some things more clear.

Can anyone who attended state this weekend provide possible updates to this and/or update the links in the OP?

Looks like Ladue's 630 points in the semifinals sets the new semifinal match record, Class 4 record, and is second best to the long time record-holding Cuba preliminary match in 1996 by 10 points.

And they already have 2370 points going into the finals; it will only take 220 points to take the all time scoring record from 2004 Savannah.

I'll just post everything I've got re:Ladue.

Individually, I had a total of 134 TUs through 5 games. 27 round 1, 31 round 2, 28 round 3, 24 sems, 24 finals.

We beat Kickapoo 590-130, LSN 590-130, PHS 560-290, PHS again 630-200, and Rock Bridge 470-350. We totalled 2840.

EDIT: I must have missed a tossup somewhere, since Coach Brown says I had 135. I know it wasn't the 31 for sure though.

Aaron Seider from Centralia got 73 tossups. He was boss. I was 2nd in Class 3, and I only got 59. But then again Trevor also made the team, and Colton was probably 9th, so we probably had a more balanced team.
