The Washington University College Bowl Team will be hosting a mirror of the Academic Competition Federation (ACF) Early Autumn Collegiate Novice Event on September 24th, 2011.

I, Joshua Jacobs, will be serving as the Tournament Director. To register for the tournament, or if you have any questions, please email us at washuqb@gmail.com.

Time

Tournament check-in will begin at 9:30 AM, morning announcements will be at 10:00, and play will begin at 10:15. The entire tournament (including awards and playoffs) should be over before 5:00. Each team will be guaranteed at least seven rounds, and there will be finals as necessary to determine the champions.

Location

The tournament will be taking place in a building which will be determined within the next week. Parking should be plentiful for the event, and a precise location to park will be specified once the building is determined.

Registration

To register, please e-mail me at washuqb@gmail.com with the following information:

1/ The Number of teams you will be bringing
2/ The Number of buzzers you will be bringing
3/ The number of players you will have, as well as their names.
4/ The number of staff (moderators and scorekeepers) you will be bringing

All registrations must be received prior to the date of the tournament. Once you register, I will send out all necessary information. Please feel free to share this announcement with any schools that you think would be interested in attending.

Fee Structure

Base fee: $15/player [$60 for a 4 person team]
$5 off the base fee for schools per working buzzer system provided
$10 off the base fee for schools per competent staffer*
$10 off the base fee for schools for each 100 miles traveled
Minimum fee: $5/player [$20 for a 4 person team]

Showing up late without getting in touch with me: +$20 penalty.

*To be defined as an individual capable of either reading a 20 tossup, 20 bonus match in under 30 minutes or capable of scorekeeping such a match.

We are, of course, willing to make accommodations if a team has trouble paying and wishes to arrange a payment plan, etc. Checks should be made out to "Washington University Academic Team;" we can also take cash payments, but greatly prefer payment by check.

High School Staffing Discount

In addition to offering the above discounts for collegiate teams attending this event, we will also be offering a $10 discount to every high school player, coach, or anyone else involved with a high school event who volunteers to staff our event, to be applied towards admissions fees for our high school tournament, the Washington University High School Academic Challenge (WUHSAC). We will also offer a $5 discount per 50 miles traveled, one way, for individuals affiliated with high schools traveling 50 or more miles to staff our tournament.

Also, volunteers who bring buzzer sets will be eligible for an additional $10 WUHSAC registration discount per buzzer. We will be offering six such discounts in total.

Eligibility

1. All ACF eligibility rules apply, except when they contradict the rules below. ACF eligibility rules can be found at http://acf-quizbowl.com/documents/acfrules_final.pdf beginning on page 3.
2. This is a tournament for introducing collegiate novices to quizbowl. Consequently, no high school teams or players are eligible.
3. Anyone (who does not break Rules 1 or 2) who has never played quizbowl before is automatically eligible. Other academic competition does not count as quizbowl for this rule.
4. Players meeting one or more of the following criteria must apply to the head editor for special permission to play:
i. If you have already completed your second year of college (calculated from time in college, not credits).
ii. If you were ever on a playoff team at NAQT HSNCT or PACE NSC.
iii. If you have ever scored at least 30 points per game at any college tournament.
iv. If you have ever won any college tournament.
5. Anyone who does not fall into any of the four categories listed in Rule 4 is automatically eligible to play.

Procedure for applying for special permission to play: 1) Email Andrew Hart at hartam@gmail.com; 2) state which of the Rule 4 points would render you otherwise ineligible; 3) list when and how you came to achieve any of the accomplishments that lead to your being otherwise ineligible; 4) state succinctly why you want to play.

The tournament will be using the ACF Novice set, a set of accessible and short questions geared towards beginner players. For more information, please check here: http://hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=11647

For anyone that's curious, Mizzou A ended up winning the tournament after Truman B (our staffers originally) forfeited the right to play an advantage final. Truman A got third and DePauw B was fourth.

From what I could gather, they seemed to think Mizzou would have won the final anyway.

Wow how honorable. I mean it was barely after 3 pm so I'm sure you guys were considering the drive back to Kirksville and how it would be dark soon and therefore some demon would eat you on the road. I'm sure it was never a consideration (despite the valiant argument that girl from the B team put before 8 very confused Mizzou individuals) that some team was being screwed out of a round. I'm sure it was never a consideration that the tournament staff that had run the tournament quite efficiently all day and was anticipating staying around had no idea you all were flaking. I'm sure it was never a consideration that you were marring a great effort by a first time tournament director who then had to tell in a quite embarrassed way Mizzou that they didn't get that extra match and I'm sure it was never a consideration precisely how that made him feel. Frankly, I'm impressed Josh had the class to give you two trophies. I do not have that within me. I'm impressed Mizzou had the class to take the forfeit as graciously as they did and still play the match as a scrimmage because they care about improving as a team.

I hope Truman State does not ever need a favor from me. It shall not be forthcoming. In 16 years of quizbowl this was the most irrational, laziest excuse for skipping out on a match of a final I have ever seen. You people should be ashamed for your actions today. And unless you apologize to all concerned I will not entertain even suggesting that anyone support in a marginal way any event you decide to hold for at least 2 years. If you want to act like immature brats, you're going to be treated like them. Deal with it.

While I will not go so far as to disavow all association, I must echo Sean's statements. To expound on the words of the venerable H. Edwards, "You play to win the game." All opting out of the advantage final did was deprive yourself out of valuable experience and, as evidenced here, only make our "highly selective" institution look like cowards. If only our football team had that luxury against two-thirds the MIAA.

If my actions or my teammates actions have caused a lot of anger in the quiz bowl community, then I am sorry. Josh ran a spectacular tournament, and the moderators were all very good and on their game. I can once again only apologize, and hope that we can prove ourselves different from that in the future.

I had tons of fun Saturday! Huge thanks to WashU for running a great event, which went smoothly and professionally all day long!!

I know all of our new players really appreciated having an event to attend nearby, and the fact that the tournament ran well means they'll be back for more. Huge thanks to Josh, Spencer, Sean, Charles, Gordon, Sam, Ben and everyone else that I don't know that staffed. I especially thank them for sticking around and scrimmaging with us on what should have been the finals packet.

Also, I do want to thank Truman for giving one of our players a ride back to Columbia due to a weird transportation-logistical issue we had, thanks to me wanting to visit my brother in Cape Girardeau directly after the tournament. It was weird that they forfeited; I was looking forward to playing them once again - they're good competition and it would have proven a challenge. I await a statement from someone about the quick exit.

In a very unimportant tangent, I'd like to just point out that there are two misspelled names in the Mizzou rosters:
- My name is Dz-UR-ick, not IN like is listed.
- Also, Eric's last name is Briesacher, not Briesawher.

Jacob,

I apologize if anything I said made you feel as I was coming at you. It was a little shoot the messenger and for that I apologize. You and your delightful A team are not to be held accountable for what happened as my understanding based on what I observed and what I was told came straight from the other team. Your B team... I stand by those comments.
