St. Louis Open (07/14/2012)

(Cross-posted from the collegiate forum)

Hello, everyone! I'm pleased to announce that we will be hosting the St. Louis Open at Washington University in St. Louis, on the 14th of July 2012. I, Charles Hang, will be serving as the Tournament Director, and can be reached at charleshang228@yahoo.com.

The tournament will feature both an academic and a trash component, details of which are below.

Questions

The academic tournament will be using the ATTACK set, details of which can be found here: http://hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewtopic. ... 09&t=12450

We will be using the CAHLFS set, details of which can be found here, for the trash tournament:
http://hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=12938

Registration

To register, please e-mail me at charleshang228@yahoo.com. Please indicate the following information:

1/ The Number of teams you will be bringing.
2/ The Number of buzzers you will be bringing.
3/ The number of players you will have, as well as their names.
4/ The number of staff (moderators and scorekeepers) you will be bringing.

Please register separate teams for both events and let me know if staffers will only be staffing one or the other event.

Please form up and register a team before the event.

Fee Structure

Academic Tournament:

Base Fee: $15 per high school player on your team, $20 per collegiate and beyond player on your team.*

*Recent high school graduates of the Class of 2012 are still considered high school players for these purposes.

There's also a $4 per person charge if you want pizza (please pay this in cash)

Buzzer Discount: -$10 per working buzzer
Moderator Discount: -$10 per moderator
Scorekeeper Discount: -$5 per scorekeeper

Showing up late without getting in touch with me: +$20 penalty.

Minimum Fee: $30.

Trash Tournament:

$10/player

We are, of course, willing to make accommodations if a team has trouble paying and wishes to arrange a payment plan, etc.

Please make checks out to "Washington University Academic Team;" we can also take cash payments but greatly prefer payments by check.

Eligibility

Anyone can play this on any team. We would greatly prefer if you don't form “super-teams” for this tournament, given the nature of the field and the level of the questions.

Location

This tournament will be held at Washington University in St. Louis, in the Danforth University Center (Building 25 here: http://visitor.wustl.edu/danforthmap.pdf).

The building address is:

6453 Forsyth Avenue
St. Louis, MO 63130

Parking is plentiful.

Time

We will begin at 9:30 in a room to be determined. Please show up by 9:00 for this tournament, or get in touch with me if you know you can't make it on time. Once you register, I'll send you a confirmation including my phone number for contact purposes.

We expect to be done before 4:00 PM with the academic tournament, at which point we will have dinner and commence with the trash tournament, hopefully within half an hour. We will end the tournament by 9:00 PM (which is when the building closes).

Tournament Format

Our precise schedule depends on how many teams we will have in attendance and will be finalized a few days beforehand. I plan on targeting 8-10 games (preferably closer to 10) and ending before 4:00 PM to give us adequate time for the trash tournament.

In order to maximize the amount of time available for Quiz Bowl, we will be ordering pizza for consumption between the academic and trash tournaments. As mentioned above, pizza is $4 per person.

For the trash tournament, we will try to get through as many rounds as possible before the building closes at 9:00 PM; an exact schedule will be also determined once we know how many teams will be playing.

I'll need you to take money from people, and I'll let you know if I need you to staff.

For the record, in order to expedite some issues from the previous semester, all checks for this event are to be made:

Pay to the Order of: Charles Beard

NOT Wuat. Charlie if there is another way to address you for the purposes of making out a check, please correct me.

P.S. I had the approval of the WUAT board to say this.

Yes the issue that prompted my original post has been resolved to all parties' satisfaction. Charlie Beard is correct. Further I would like to register my team for trash of myself, Delano Barnes, Matt Chadbourne, and Kyle Buxton. We will be the "Tickle Monsters."

I would rather be Cartman or Stan Buxton.

Is this tournament going to use powers, since ATTACK is powermarked?

Except for one additional team which should be updating the spreadsheet with players shortly, the spreadsheet is current.

Also, at the moment, it looks like we have nine teams for the academic event; thus, if someone (or some group of someones) would like to play on a tenth team, that would be lovely. Otherwise, we'll just go with byes.

I count ten teams (rows 2-11 on spreadsheet), assuming DePauw is the un-updated one?

You're right--I overlooked a team.

Just to give everyone an update, I'm still waiting for one last registration (from the Alex Meneses, et al. team), so if anyone knows how to reach them and can ask them to email me (charleshang228@yahoo.com), that would be appreciated. Beyond that, the tournament information email will be going out tomorrow, so if anyone doesn't get it, let me know.

To cover a potential shortfall in laptops, we'll be offering three $10 laptop discounts on a first come, first served basis. Thus, if you're going to be in attendance for both the academic and trash tournaments and would be willing to let us use your laptop for staffing purposes for both, email me at charleshang228@yahoo.com.

Also, you can ignore the late fee on the trash tournament invoice--but please don't be late!

I still haven't received contact information from several teams and several staffers, so if you haven't sent me your phone number (or the number of someone on your team), please do so.

Also, there are still two open laptop discounts, so email me if you want them.

Fun tournament, thanks for running it! Out of curiosity, why was a summer open tournament in which half the players were in college or beyond on a regular level high school set?

I had a lot of fun at this as well especially, of course, in the trash end of things. At this point in my qb career I can say what a privilege it is to play against such a great field of people and how lucky I am to have such great friends to play with in Mr. Chadbourne, Buxton, and (in a display of bailing us out at the last minute) Loy. I hope we do it again soon.

Congratulations to The Tickle Monsters (Sean Phillips, Jason Loy, Matt Chadbourne, Kent Buxton) for winning the trash tournament after going 9-1. Stats are here.
merv1618 wrote:Some of the trash stats are wrong. Not that it really matters.
If you'd like me to fix them, I'd be happy to do so--just let me know where the mistakes are.
Mewto55555 wrote:Fun tournament, thanks for running it! Out of curiosity, why was a summer open tournament in which half the players were in college or beyond on a regular level high school set?
As far as I'm aware, there isn't really a summer college level set available before August other than Chicago Open; if there had been, I would have been happy to mirror it like we mirrored Moon Pie last year.

Glad to hear everyone enjoyed the tournament!

In CCR's first game against Tickle Monsters, Itamar's 1-2-0 was actually Dan's. That's all I see.

Also, thanks for a well-run tournament and prompt stat postings. Getting done an hour and a half ahead of schedule was very nice for those of us who live two hours away.

Indeed!

And on the same note of stat correction, I think I should have had two tossups in the trash tournament in round 7 instead of one. It probably got credited to Jeremy.

I wish there were open tournaments written at around the level of ACF Fall or EFT, which seems like it would have been closer to ideal for this field. As it stands I'm not too down on the choice of set - it was easy but well-written, and definitely superior to last year's Moon Pie.

This was a ton of fun to play - I'm always happy to be reminded of just how out of practice I am.

Speaking for myself, I would have showed up to defend my title if the set were an appropriate one for an open field, but as is I refuse to play high school tournaments, so I would vote for something else in the future.

Dylan and John had their round 9 results switched. Dylan should have gone 3/1/1, instead of John.

Any word on when ATTACK will be open for discussion? There were just a couple of things (one bonus part in particular) that struck me as ridiculous in one direction or the other in terms of difficulty.

Though, overall, I thought the set was super well made. Much love for Mr. Silverman and his crew.
