Re: things that suck...
Things that suck from my recent experience.
--Getting two feet of snow over a period of three days on finals week. Threw all of my finals into absolute chaos.
--Going back to Missouri and getting stuck in a turf war between my parents (who separated the day I moved to Ohio).
--My dad having to have a pacemaker installed and I couldn't be there for him.
--Getting my car stuck in a snowbank on an unplowed side street in the city of Cleveland. At 2:30 in the morning.

The lack of sun in the northeast Ohio winter. I don't mind the snow, I love the cold; what I hate is that it's cloudy all the time.

Kent actually pulled out of their planned first-week game against Purdue next season so they could play Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Why would you want to go down there knowing you're going to get stomped??

The 'Tide pay Kent State a bunch of money and probably even cover the team's flight down there and back. Guarantee Game.
That doesn't suck, except for the curbstomp.

Of course, Mizzou coach Gary Pinkel played tight end at Kent State.

Gary Pinkel and Nick Saban were on the only Kent State football team to win the MAC title in 1972 or '73, I think it was. Nick Saban was on campus the day of the Kent State shootings and narrowly missed actually being there.mujason wrote:Of course, Mizzou coach Gary Pinkel played tight end at Kent State.

Re: things that suck...
Entercom citing Nielsen ratings as a reason for killing off yet another KC Radio icon. Not content with killing off Jazz & 61 Country to make room for a languishing sports station, they've decided to bump KUDL in favor of an FM simulcast of KMBZ, as it's too close to the new format-of-the-month attempt on 99.7.
Worse: when they put to rest 99.7 KY (which was well due, but they're on the hook for that too), they transferred those letters to a Spanish station at AM 1250. I'm not aware of any plans to preserve the KUDL letters when 98.1 becomes KMBZ-FM and 99.7 becomes KZPT. I anticipate a mad rush for KUDL if Entercom lets it go, especially as they've been part of the KC area for 50 years.

KMBZ may suck, but KUDL getting knocked off the air sure doesn't suck. That station was horrendous.

I'll only give you that for Delilah, but when it came to keeping a steady stream of smarmy soft rock, they had that down to a T for 35+ years. Heck, the letters contributed to it even before it was smarmy soft rock.ashkenaziCD wrote:KMBZ may suck, but KUDL getting knocked off the air sure doesn't suck. That station was horrendous.

P.S.: April Fools.
P.P.S.: It turns out the KUDL letters are now on the classical station, AM 1660. That station was originally on FM 96.5, and has kinda returned there in the form of an HD subchannel called "Radio Bach"
OK, that name kinda sucks.
So does Country not being on 610.
So does what's currently ON 610.

Re: things that suck...
Stay far far far far far away from AT&T DSL.... I've been pleased overall with my AT&T U-Verse service at my apartment but it's unfortunately unavailable at my new house. Because AT&T's promotional rate for DSL is half the cost of cable for a whole year I decided to go with it because of the significant savings... well, you get what you pay for. I requested it on Tuesday to be self-installed on Thursday and opted to provide my own modem, and once I got my modem I plugged my modem in on Friday to try to connect and could never get ADSL sync (which I would think means there's something probably wrong with my phone line). I haven't seen anything from AT&T other than an order confirmation in my email... nothing in my mailbox or anything (they said they were going to send some kind of welcome kit even though I didn't order a modem).
I've tried calling their technical support to see if they could diagnose what is wrong but could never get through to a person on their automated system... last night I was calling at a late hour so I didn't try too hard, but today all I could get was a message basically saying "DSL is so popular we have high call volumes, see if you can find a solution to your problem on our website, or hang up". Fantastic customer service!!! After all this it's going to be worth it paying double to get actual service from SureWest (I was probably going to switch to them anyway after the promotional rate expired since DSL is soon to be capped at 150 GB per month; I could have lived with that at the promotional rate but not the normal rate).
OK, I'm done venting... this ends another one of Jeffrey's rants on the miscellaneous board

Re: things that suck...
Everyone including me already knew this but Delta seriously sucks... we're already 30 mins late, have had a gate change to a different concourse, and this is the most ridiculously slow boarding process ever! Seems like at this point in the time they started boarding until now the flight I took out here from MCI would have completely boarded and would have already taken off... good thing Southwest owns AirTran now if HSNCT is here again next year
Edit: all in all it wasn't too bad; I didn't mind the gate change too much since it helped to pass the time especially had we only been delayed 20 minutes as originally announced. It was really the ridiculously long boarding time (it sounded like the barcode scanner wasn't working) on top of the delay that prompted this rant. Still, hopefully we'll see some good things happen at Atlanta now that Southwest finally owns a presence there.

Now imagine a similar scenario, but for an international connecting flight we were transferred onto at the last minute (we weren't even originally going to come to Atlanta or use Delta, but there was some weather delay for the original plane in D.C.), and having the plane held for use while the guy at the desk is literally sweating while trying to get us cleared to board. So yeah, I agreeU. U.S. Airways-
NKC was to fly from Atlanta to KC, with a lay-over in Charlotte, NC. They get to NC to discover their flight to KC is cancelled. So now they have to fly to Philadelphia at 6 and get a flight to KC there at 8:50 PM. (When their original flight was supposed to have them HOME at 2:50, plus they have finals tomorrow) Their flight in NC was delayed to 7:48 instead of 6, so they are stuck in Charlotte's airport until then. But now they wont have time to get to their 8:50 flight home in Philly, so they will probably have to stay the night in Philly and get a plane home in the morning. This really sucks.

Yeah, my one hour delay is fantastic compared to that... horrible to hear that NKC is in that situation. I'll always avoid the big 4/5 (United/Continental merger in progress) whenever I can

Something must have happened with flights out of NC because my roommate got stuck there for a while today too. He was coming back from the Bahamas for his sister's wedding and his flight from NC to STL was delayed. Was there bad weather in NC? Or just the usual airline nonsense?

The weather this year.
Two feet of snow.
Two weeks of torrential downpours.
Two weeks where tornadoes tormented large swaths of the States.
Two weeks of triple digit weather.
Therefore, fall with come about only after we get inundated with ran from two Cat-5 hurricanes, and then fall will only last for two weeks before we're straight into wintry weather.

Today's high temperature just south of the state line: 108°F
An hour south in Fort Smith: 115°F, an all time record.
Six months ago, the area was under two feet of snow, and the low was -19°F.
For those keeping track at home, that's a 134º range in temperatures this year. I'm not aware of anything like that ever being recorded in a U.S. locality, but good chance it has happened.
