Post Moberly Young Scholars Tournament (MYST) - 20th Jan 2018
Continuing to build on the successful development of OMAR, the members of Moberly High School Scholar Bowl are proud to announce the second Moberly Young Scholars Tournament (MYST), and invite your team to participate in our tournament at Moberly High School, scheduled for January 20th, 2018.

We will host a junior varsity/novice division and a middle school/junior high division. Middle school/junior high programs must be properly registered with MSHSAA in order to participate. There will be no roster restrictions for the MS/JH division; the JV division will have a roster restriction:
  • All freshmen may compete. NO seniors may compete.
  • Sophomores who have not competed at HSNCT, SSNCT or PACE NSC may compete.
  • Juniors who have not previously competed at any 20/20 tournament may compete.
Varsity players who are not eligible to compete are welcome to serve as tournament staff and can qualify their school for a discount off the registration fee.

This tournament will consist of a minimum of eight games for all teams in a modified national format:
  • Each game shall consist of two halves of ten tossups each, with each correct tossup followed by a three-part bonus.
  • Correct tossup answers are ten points each, with an additional five-point “power” awarded for a correct answer given before a pre-determined point in the tossup.
  • Unlike other NAQT/national tournaments, we will NOT assess a five-point penalty for interrupting the moderator during the tossup with an incorrect answer.
  • Unless otherwise specified in a bonus set, each bonus part shall be ten points each. Incorrect bonus parts shall immediately rebound.
  • MSHSAA timing rules shall with one exception: Teams shall receive only five seconds to answer a bonus. Moderators will be instructed to prompt after four seconds.
  • There are no math calculation tossups or bonus.
  • In the event a game is tied after regulation, additional tossups shall be read until the next change in score.
  • Each team shall have one 30 second timeout per half. Substitutions, scorechecks, and team conferences may occur at the half, prior to overtime, or during any timeout called by either team. (Note: per a change in MSHSAA rules, teams must use a timeout to request a scorecheck other than at halftime or the end of regulation.)
  • Teams may play with fewer than four players. Rosters shall be submitted in advance and finalized at registration the morning of the tournament. Players may not change teams during the tournament.

At present, we are limiting each division to 12 teams, with an eye to expand each division as staff becomes available. Additional teams will be placed on a waitlist and contacted should an opening occur. During the initial registration period we will limit schools to two teams per division. If you are able to field additional teams, please let us know and we will place them on the waitlist. Should multiple teams from your school be admitted, we ask that each of your teams’ rosters be limited to seven players.

Both divisions will play on their respective versions of the SCOP 8 set, written by members of the Scholastic Community Outreach Program of Illinois. More information and sample packets are available at http://scop-qb.org/. This set is also being used at novice tournaments in Oakville on November 4th and Tuscumbia on January 20th; you will not be able to attend these or any other tournament using this set.

Teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for at least three afternoon games. This setup is subject to change, depending on the number of teams signed up. We plan to start the team meeting at 8:30 a.m., with the first round set for at 8:50 a.m. and afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. With the exception of any playoff games for trophies, we anticipate the last game ending around 4 p.m.

Fee structure is as follows, per school:
  • First team: $65
  • Additional teams: $60
  • Discount for travelling more than 100 miles each way (determined by Google Maps): $10
  • Discount for providing a working buzzer set: $5 (maximum $10)
  • Discount for providing competent staff: $5 per staffer (maximum $10)
All discounts are subject to the discretion of tournament officials.

Additionally, novice teams that participate in MYST are eligible for a $10 discount off their registration fee for the Outstate Missouri Academic Rendezvous, set for April 7th at Moberly High School.

Moberly High School is located at 1625 Gratz Brown Road. MHS is best accessed by taking Highway 63 to the Route M (Middle Grove) exit, then turning west into town about a half mile before turning right onto Gratz Brown Road. The high school will be on your left. Most lunch options will be on North Morley/Business 63.

The tournament is under the direction of Moberly High School Coach Kathy Brandon and veteran scholar bowl moderator Kyle Hill of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, an organization dedicated to promoting quality scholar bowl tournaments around the state. Again we anticipate receiving certification and assistance from their membership.

To register for this tournament, please visit http://tinyurl.com/MYST2018Registration. Questions concerning the tournament may be directed to either Kathy Brandon at KathyBrandon@MoberlySpartans.org or Kyle Hill kyle@hillonline.net. Please include “MYST 2018” in the subject line.

We look forward to seeing you at Moberly High School on January 20th.

Two spots remain in the novice division, and we have plenty of spots in the middle school division.

The novice field is currently full; if enough staff and team demand materializes, we might expand to 18 teams.

We still have six spots open in the middle school division.

The fortnightly was sent to teams earlier this week. The JV field is set at 12 teams. The middle school field presently remains at six.

Six teams are competing in the middle school division, while we have a dozen in the novice division.

Middle school stats: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... s_prelims/
Top three teams will play a second round-robin to determine the champion. Next three teams will play a consolation round-robin. Each team will have a crossover game that will not factor into the overall standings.

Novice stats: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... s/prelims/
Kirksville A enters the championship pool as the lone undefeated team, having edged Wentzville Holt on the last tossup + 30 on the bonus in Round 4. Holt, North Shelby, Fulton A & Mexico are 1-1, while Moberly is 0-2. Two games will carry over for each team.

Middle School Division:
Patriots clear the field to win first. Moberly B edged Orchard Farm on points for second after both teams agreed to use a staistical tiebreaker.

Novice Division:
Kirksville A and Holt are 4-1 and will have a one-game final for first. Fulton A finished third with a 3-2 record after edging Moberly. Fulton's win avoided a three-way tie for third, which would have been with Moberly and North Shelby.

Wentzville Holt avenged its lone loss of the day to handily beat Kirksville A 370-215. Kirksville A and Wentzville Holt ended up in a tie among playoff teams at 4-1, necessitating the one-game playoff, after Kirksville A lost to Fulton A. Fulton A finished in third, followed by North Shelby, Mexico and Moberly. Heath Bana of Wentzville Holt led all novice division scorers with 73 points per game.

St Louis Patriots, led by Owen Farra's 112½ points per game, breezed through their competition to finish 7-0 and win the middle school division. Moberly B edged their A-team counterparts to advance to the playoff pool, then doubled up Orchard Farm to create a tie for second. Points per game broke the tie in favor of the hometown Spartans.

I want to extend my gratitude to our tournament help this weekend: Moberly varsity team members Brennan, Eric, Hannah, Kayleigh, Ryan and Sarah; moderators Ramey Baro, Jon Deering, Stephanie Hull, Michael Powers, Dale Schenewerk, and Kevin Stockman; scorekeepers Makenna from Smith-Cotton, Tyler Francis and Tessa Friedman from MHS, Bart Craft, Jodie Engel, and Erin Shirk of MMS, as well as a player from Orchard Farm. I'm especially appreciative of the assistance of MHS alumna Audrey Brandon, who wonderfully served as the novice division statkeeper and learned the ropes of directing tournaments. I also extend my appreciation to MHS Coaches Kathy Brandon and Sabria el-Kurbu, MMS Coach Joan Snodgrass, MHS principal Zach McMains, activities director Tim Barnett, and superintendent Dr Matt Miller for their hospitality and support of quiz bowl at Moberly Schools.

We hope to see everyone back at Moberly HS on April 7th at the Outstate Missouri Academic Rendezvous. Best wishes to all teams as the season continues, and as always, in the words of my late freshman journalism adviser: "Be Safe! Be Smart!"
