2018 NAQT SSNCT - April 27-29 in Chicago

Post by Jeffrey Hill »

96 teams in the Traditional Public division and 64 teams in the Open division are competing in NAQT's Small School National Championship Tournament this weekend, including 19 from Missouri! In each division, teams played 10 preliminary games over 15 rounds, with teams 6-4 or better advancing to Sunday's double elimination playoffs. (Unlike HSNCT and some past SSNCTs, it is my understanding that all teams making the playoffs are not eliminated until their second loss.)

Results from Saturday (seeds are unconfirmed; based on record then average points):

Traditional Public (17)
Advancing to playoffs:
#4 Hallsville 8-2, 362.84 PP20TUH [#1 among VSS schools]
#12 Louisiana 7-3, 300.43 PP20TUH [#5 VSS]
#23 Centralia 6-4, 247.51 PP20TUH [#9 VSS]
#27 Orchard Farm 6-4, 223.72 PP20TUH
#30 Tuscumbia 6-4, 218.52 PP20TUH [#13 VSS]
#31 Mound City 6-4, 208.61 PP20TUH [#14 VSS]

Not advancing to playoffs:
#37 South Shelby 5-5, 236 PP20TUH [#20 VSS]
#40 Moberly 5-5, 207.73 PP20TUH
#44 Pilot Grove 5-5, 200.91 PP20TUH [#22 VSS]
#52 Plattsburg 5-5, 168.37 PP20TUH [#26 VSS]
#61 Exeter A 4-6, 183.01 PP20TUH [#32 VSS]
#66 Southern Boone 4-6, 165.45 PP20TUH
#71 Gainesville 4-6, 142.79 PP20TUH [#37 VSS]
#79 Stockton 4-6, 107.83 PP20TUH [#43 VSS]
#87 South Nodaway 3-7, 86.32 PP20TUH [#46 VSS]
#91 Crocker 2-8, 72.09 PP20TUH [#49 VSS]
#94 Exeter B 2-8, 35.91 PP20TUH [#52 VSS]

"VSS" indicates "Very Small Schools" (300 or fewer in grades 10-12). Everyone is playing in the same division, but the top 6 Very Small Schools will also be recognized

Open:
#38 Living Word Christian (O'Fallon) 5-5, 194.81 PP20TUH
#58 St. Pius X 3-7, 134.78 PP20TUH
(neither advancing to playoffs)

Stats

Great job to all for representing Missouri well and good luck to those advancing to the playoffs tomorrow!

Prelim individual results to be reported in my next post!

The top 16 individual scorers in the Traditional Public division are recognized as all-stars. Looks like Missouri will be home to the top two scorers, as the only two players to break 100 PP20TUH in the Traditional Public division!
#1 Michael Powers, Louisiana, 105.60 PP20TUH
#2 Samuel Lockwood, Hallsville, 104.59 PP20TUH
#8 Tyler Beauregard, South Shelby, 82.22 PP20TUH
#12 Wyatt Meyer, Mound City, 69.38 PP20TUH

Other players from Missouri in the top 10% of 527 total individuals:
#17 Kale Day, Pilot Grove, 58.90 PP20TUH (misses an all-star award by 2.64 PP20TUH)
#19 Brennan Sapp, Moberly, 57.27 PP20TUH
#45 Dustin Bax, Tuscumbia, 42.59 PP20TUH

I believe this is the first time a Missouri player has led an NAQT high school national championship in scoring! (Charles Dees was #2 at the 2007 HSNCT. Previous best at SSNCT was Samuel at #3 last year. Charles Dees was #1 at 2008 NSC and Max Schindler was #1 at 2013 NSC as well as 2012 and 2013 NASAT.)

The top 6 freshmen and sophomores who are not overall all-stars are recognized as rising stars. All of the top 16 were juniors and seniors. It doesn't look like any Missourians will be named one of the six rising stars. Hunter Webb of Gainesville was #9 in that category as the #6 sophomore, and Austin Mynatt from Plattsburg was right behind as the #8 sophomore.

The top 16 individuals in the Open division will also be named all-stars. Caleb Hoke of Living Word Christian barely missed the cutoff by 1.58 PP20TUH, finishing at #17 with 56.13 PP20TUH.

Congratulations all!

The soonest potential Missouri matchup is in round 18 of the winners bracket. If Tuscumbia and Mound City win their first two games. Tuscumbia will hold the #6 card and Mound City the #7 card.

Other possible winners' bracket matches:
Round 19: #3 Orchard Farm v. #6 (Tuscumbia/Mound City)
Round 20: #2 Centralia v. #3 (Orchard Farm/Tuscumbia/Mound City)
Round 20: #1 Louisiana v. #4 Hallsville
Round 21: #1 (Louisiana/Hallsville) v. #2 (Centralia/Orchard Farm/Tuscumbia/Mound City)

Some possible round 18 elimination matches:
#19 Tuscumbia [W, L] v #26 Centralia [L, bye]
#22 Orchard Farm [W, L] v. #23 Centralia [W, L]
#18 Mound City [W, L] v. #27 Orchard Farm [L, bye]

Round 16:
Centralia won 310-160 over Clermont Northeastern A (OH), retaining the #23 card. They now play #2 Williamsville (IL) in the winners' bracket.

Tuscumbia and Beachwood kept it close until Beachwood pulled away at the end of the game for a final score of 370-235. Tuscumbia retains the #30 card and will play the loser of #14 Huntingdon A (PA) v. #35 Evergreen (OH).

Mound City lost to Macomb (IL). Mound City retains the #31 card and will play the loser of #15 Bridge Creek (OK) vs. #34 New Berlin (IL).

Orchard Farm lost to Athens (IL). Orchard Farm retains the #27 card and will have a bye in round 17. They will play the loser of #7 Ottawa Hills A (OH) v. #18 Macomb (IL) in round 18.

Looks like Hallsville will play Benjamin Logan (OH) in round 17.

Tuscumbia finishes tied for 33rd after dropping their second game to Evergreen.

Mound City is still alive, playing #14 Byron in round 18.

Hallsville and Louisiana won their winners' bracket games in round 17.

Centralia lost to #2 Williamsville and has dropped to the elimination bracket, playing Athens (IL).

Mound City finishes tied for 23rd after Byron defeats them 415-125.

#1 Glasgow A drops Louisiana to the elimination bracket to play the winner of Macomb/Orchard Farm. Winner of the next game will finish in the top 14.

Macomb eliminates Orchard Farm, so Orchard Farm also finishes tied for 23rd.

Athens eliminates Centralia, so Centralia also finishes tied for 23rd.

Kyle reports that Hallsville still holds the #4 card in the winners' bracket with a win over Cloverleaf A (OH). They now play #5 Russell (KY). Winner plays #1 Glasgow A (KY).

Louisiana falls to Raceland-Worthington (KY) to finish tied for 10th. It looks like they will be going home with two trophies, as I believe they will play Camp Hill (PA), last year's Very Small School champion, for 5th place in the Very Small School rankings.

Hallsville over Piasa to secure a tied for fifth or better finish! The next round is scheduled to start at 1 PM.

Ottawa Hills (OH) and Cooperstown (NY) are the other Very Small Schools still in the tournament. Since they are playing each other in the next round:

If Hallsville wins, they will finish in the top 4 and play Glasgow (KY), who had earlier dropped Hallsville to the elimination bracket by a score of 400-310. One of the other very small schools will also be in the top 4, so Hallsville will finish in the top 2 of VSS and the overall rankings in the top 4 will determine the very small school champion.

If Hallsville loses, they will finish tied for fifth, matching last year's finish. Since the other game features two VSS teams, the team that wins that game will be the VSS champion, and Hallsville and the loser of that game will play each other for second place VSS.

Still haven't seen a result for Louisiana's VSS ranking.

After eliminating West Point A for the second straight SSNCT, Hallsville reaches the final four! Next up is a rematch against still-undefeated Glasgow A (KY), who defeated Hallsville in round 20 by a score of 400-310.

The other game is Williamsville (IL) vs. Ottawa Hills A (OH). Ottawa Hills is the only other very small school in the top four, so Hallsville will have a top two finish in the VSS rankings based on the overall placement of the final four.

By winning the winners' bracket, Glasgow is guaranteed a spot in the final. If Glasgow wins, they will be advantaged in a final over the winner of the other game, and Hallsville will play the loser of the other game for third. If Hallsville wins, they will play the winner of the other game in the semifinal game. The loser of that game will be third, and the winner plays Glasgow in a one game final for first place.

As we approach the end of the Glasgow/Hallsville game, I can report that Louisiana finished in sixth place among very small schools after a 265-360 loss to Camp Hill (PA).

At a timeout called by Glasgow with 4 tossups to go, Hallsville is down by 40 with 2:08 on the clock.

Hallsville will play Williamsville (IL) for third place overall after a 430-265 loss to Glasgow. By advancing to the advantaged final, Ottawa Hills (OH) will be the top Very Small School and Hallsville second. Congratulations!
