2019 MYST (MS Tournament) - POSTPONED TO 9th March 2019, Moberly

Post by L-Town Expatriate »

UPDATED INFORMATION AS OF 18TH JANUARY 2019:
Because of the risk of inclement weather and dangerous travel conditions, we have postponed the Moberly Young Scholars Tournament. The middle school division will compete on March 9th and can continue to use the form below. The junior varsity division will now run March 30th as part of the Outstate Missouri Academic Rendezvous (OMAR). Registration for OMAR will be handled in a separate form.

The members of Moberly High School Scholar Bowl are proud to announce the third Moberly Young Scholars Tournament (MYST), and invite your team to participate in our tournament at Moberly High School, scheduled for January 19th, 2019. We will host a junior varsity/novice division and a middle school division. Middle school programs must be properly registered with MSHSAA in order to participate.

This tournament will consist of a minimum of eight games for all teams in a modified standard 20/20 format:
  • Each game shall consist of two halves of ten tossups each, with each correct tossup followed by a three-part bonus.
  • Correct tossup answers are ten points each, with an additional five-point “power” awarded for a correct answer given before a pre-determined point in the tossup. We are not assessing a five-point penalty for interrupting the moderator during the tossup with an incorrect answer.
  • Unless otherwise specified in a bonus set, each bonus part shall be ten points each. Incorrect bonus parts shall immediately rebound.
  • MSHSAA timing rules shall apply with with two exceptions. First, teams shall receive only five seconds to answer a bonus. Moderators will be instructed to prompt after four seconds. Second, the middle school division will receive 10 seconds to answer math calculation tossups and bonus parts. The JV division has no math calculation.
  • In the event a game is tied after regulation, additional tossups shall be read until the next change in score.
  • Each team shall have one 30 second timeout per half. Substitutions, scorechecks, and team conferences may occur at the half, prior to overtime, or during any timeout called by either team.
  • Teams may play with fewer than four players but must have at least two players. Rosters shall be submitted in advance and finalized at registration the morning of the tournament. Players may not change teams during the tournament.
At present, we are limiting each division to 12 teams, with an eye to expand each division as staff becomes available. Additional teams will be placed on a waitlist and contacted should an opening occur. During the initial registration period we will limit schools to two teams per division. If you are able to field additional teams, please let us know and we will place them on the waitlist. Should multiple teams from your school be admitted, we ask that each of your teams’ rosters be limited to seven players.

The JV/novice division will run on the SCOP 9 set, written by members of the Scholastic Community Outreach Program of Illinois. More information and sample packets are available at http://scop-qb.org/. This set is also being used at novice tournaments in Oakville on November 3rd and North Kansas City on February 16th; you will not be able to attend these or any other tournament using this set. We are enforcing a roster restriction:
  • All freshmen may compete. NO seniors may compete.
  • Sophomores who have not competed at HSNCT, SSNCT or PACE NSC may compete.
  • Juniors who have not previously competed at any 20/20 tournament may compete.
Varsity players who are not eligible to compete are welcome to serve as tournament staff and can qualify their school for a discount off the registration fee.

The middle school division will run on NAQT’s MS-28 set. As of October 1st, this set is also being used at middle school tournaments in Sullivan on November 3rd and Springfield Kickapoo on December 1st, as well as the Tri-County North and Ozark 7 Conference tournaments. MYST will serve as a qualifier for NAQT’s Middle School National Championship Tournament, set for May 10th through 12th at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Rosemont, Illinois. The top 15 percent of teams will receive a bid, subject to the discretion of NAQT. In order to serve as a qualifier, freshmen are not allowed to compete at the middle school level.

Teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for at least three afternoon games. This setup is subject to change, depending on the number of teams signed up. We plan to start the team meeting at 8:30 a.m., with the first round set for 8:50 a.m. and afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. With the exception of any playoff games for trophies, we anticipate the last game ending around 4 p.m.

Fee structure is as follows, per school:
  • First JV/Novice team: $70
  • First middle school team: $65
  • Additional teams: $65 per JV, $60 per MS
  • Discount for travelling more than 100 miles each way (determined by Google Maps): $10
  • Discount for providing a working buzzer set: $5 (maximum $10)
  • Discount for providing competent staff: $5 per staffer (maximum $10)
All discounts are subject to the discretion of tournament officials.

Additionally, novice teams that participate in MYST are eligible for a $10 discount off their registration fee for the Outstate Missouri Academic Rendezvous, set for March 30th at Moberly High School.

Moberly High School is located at 1625 Gratz Brown Road. MHS is best accessed by taking Highway 63 to the Route M (Middle Grove) exit, then turning west into town about a half mile before turning right onto Gratz Brown Road. The high school will be on your left. Most lunch options will be on North Morley/Business 63.

The tournament is under the direction of Moberly High School Coach Kathy Brandon and veteran scholar bowl moderator Kyle Hill of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, an organization dedicated to promoting quality scholar bowl tournaments around the state. Again we anticipate receiving certification and assistance from their membership.

To register for this tournament, please visit http://tinyurl.com/MYST2019Reg. Questions concerning the tournament may be directed to either Kathy Brandon at KathyBrandon@MoberlySpartans.org or Kyle Hill at kyle@hillonline.net. Please include “MYST 2019” in the subject line.

We look forward to seeing you at Moberly High School on January 19th.

We've hit the initial cap for the JV division, and are down to one spot in the MS division. Coach Brandon and I are compiling staff commitments to determine if a field expansion is plausible.

And we've just hit the cap for the JH/MS division. We are evaluating our staff numbers to determine if we can accommodate field expansion in either division.

We've expanded the middle school division to 18 teams! We have one opening at the moment, possibly two.
We could use another moderator or two to enable an expansion of the junior varsity division.

And we've secured the staff to allow an expansion of the JV field to the current waitlist. Ideally we'd like two more teams in the JV division so that each division has 18 teams.

I've just had an opening occur in the JV division. If you have a JV/novice squad still looking for a tournament January 19th, we'd love to have you in the Magic City!

(update @ 7th Jan, 1426p) Spot is claimed. Waitlist remains empty.

Here we go again… with at least one Columbia meteorologist calling for another foot of snow in the region*, we're looking at makeup dates. We've not postponed anything yet, but it's well within the realm of possibility. Coaches & staff, please check your e-mail on details on how we're going to determine a potential makeup date (or dates) for MYST.

We'll e-mail teams if we have to postpone, and text if the decision's made Friday or early Saturday.

*Forecast as of the time of this post.

With the forecast still looking dire, coupled by the advisory from the Missouri Department of Transportation to avoid travel this weekend, we have decided to postpone the Moberly Young Scholars Tournament at Moberly High School. Following team responses to our survey, we are setting the following makeup dates:
  • The middle school division will now take place March 9th.
  • The junior varsity division will now take place March 30th as part of the Outstate Missouri Academic Rendezvous. There is sufficient interest to host a separate novice division.
We will contact teams with additional details. Stay warm this weekend, stock up on everything you need for the Chiefs game Sunday night, and "Be Safe! Be Smart!"

Columbia Independent A completed another perfect Saturday, going 9-0 to win the tournament title. West A finished second, while CIS B defeated their D-team counterparts to claim third. Yogev Angelovici of CIS B was our top individual scorer.

I extend my immense gratitude to our tournament staff: moderators Shyla Barnett, Audrey Brandon, Bob Brandon, Jon Deering, Stephanie Hull, Lisa McClary, Stephen McClary, Brennan Sapp, and Dale Schenewerk; scorekeepers Tyler Francis, Debbie Heimann, and Daniel Linss, as well as Jennifer Borisenko and Susan Himmel from OLLIS and Andrew, Clark, DeSarae, Gabe, Issac, and Maddie from Moberly. Once again I am appreciative of the eagerness of the Moberly Scholar Bowl program and coaches Kathy Brandon, Sabria el-Kurbu, and Joan Snodgrass, as well as Moberly HS principal Jeff Jones, activities director Tim Barnett, and superintendent Dr Matt Miller, for hosting MYST, as well as OMAR later this month.

Lastly, I want to thank the thermometer for staying above freezing Saturday; we had rain for most of the day, and were it the wintry type of precipitation, I doubt we would have been able to pull off this tournament after having to postpone it two months ago. (If only this rain had shown up eight months ago!!) Hopefully winter won't be as messy next season, or later this month when Moberly hosts the Outstate Missouri Academic Rendezvous. As a reminder, you (or your corresponding high school program) will receive a $10 discount off your OMAR registration for participating in MYST. We presently have a waitlist for both the Varsity and Novice/JV divisions. If you would like more information on OMAR, please visit viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3665 or e-mail myself and Coach Brandon.

Again, thank you for taking part in MYST, and until next time I close with the words of my late freshman journalism adviser: "Be Safe! Be Smart!"
