STARK at Louisiana HS - POSTPONED to 9th February 2019

Post by L-Town Expatriate »

On behalf of the members of Louisiana High School Academic Team, I am pleased to announce the inaugural Scholastic Tournament Acclaiming the Recall of Knowledge (STARK), and invite your team to compete at our tournament, scheduled for January 12th, 2019 at LHS. This tournament will consist of a minimum of eight games for all teams in a modified standard 20/20 format:
  • Each game shall consist of two halves of ten tossups each, with each correct tossup followed by a three-part bonus.
  • Correct tossup answers are ten points each. An additional five-point “power” is awarded for a correct answer given before a pre-determined point in the tossup. All tossups are five seconds, and there are no math computation tossups.
  • We will not assess a five-point penalty for interrupting the moderator during the tossup with an incorrect answer.
  • The team that receives the bonus will have five seconds to answer each part. The moderator will prompt after four seconds. Bonus parts will not rebound. Unless otherwise specified in a bonus set, each bonus part shall be ten points each.
  • In the event a game is tied after regulation, additional tossups shall be read until the next change in score.
  • Each team shall have one 30 second timeout per half. Substitutions, scorechecks, and team conferences may occur at the half, prior to overtime, or during any timeout called by either team.
  • Teams rosters shall be limited to seven players; schools are encouraged to bring junior varsity and “B” teams to compete. Teams may play with fewer than four players but must have at least two players. Rosters shall be submitted in advance and finalized at registration the morning of the tournament. Players may not change teams during the tournament.
We will mirror The Scottie, a set written by members of the quiz bowl team at Glasgow High School in Kentucky. At present, mirrors are scheduled at Southwestern (Piasa, IL) on January 12th and Webster Groves (MO) on January 26th. If you attend STARK, you will not be able to participate in any other tournament using the set. Additional information on the set is available at http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewto ... 09&t=21424.

Teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for three afternoon games. This setup is subject to change, depending on the number of teams signed up. We plan to start the team meeting at 8:30 a.m. in the cafeteria, with the first round set for at 8:50 a.m. and afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. With the exception of any playoff games for trophies, we anticipate the last game ending around 4 p.m. We are initially limiting the field to 24 teams, with the ability to expand to 36 teams should interest and staff numbers allow. Additional teams will be placed on a waitlist and contacted should an opening occur.

Fee structure is as follows, per school:
  • First team: $65
  • Additional teams: $60
  • Discount for travelling more than 100 miles each way (determined by Google Maps): $10
  • Discount for providing a working buzzer set: $5 (maximum $10)
  • Discount for providing competent staff: $5 per staffer (maximum $10)
All discounts are subject to the discretion of tournament officials.

Louisiana High School is located at 3321 Georgia Street, across from County Market and Orscheln Farm & Home in the southwestern part of Louisiana. If approaching from the west, turn right off Highway 54 onto Route NN. When Route NN goes across the railroad tracks, continue straight onto Georgia Street. If approaching from the east, please note that construction continues on the new Champ Clark Bridge over the Mississippi River. We have several restaurants closeby, including Hardee’s, Subway, KC’s Place buffet, and the County Market Deli.

The tournament is under the direction of Louisiana High School Coach Malia Jolly and veteran scholar bowl moderator Kyle Hill of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, an organization dedicated to promoting quality scholar bowl tournaments around the state. We anticipate receiving certification and assistance from their membership.

To register for this tournament, please visit http://tinyurl.com/STARK2019Registration.
Teams outside the state of Missouri are welcome to register; however, owing to MSHSAA’s sanctioning process, we ask that any teams from out of state register prior to December 7th.

Questions concerning the tournament may be directed to either Malia Jolly at JollyM@louisiana.k12.mo.us or Kyle Hill at kyle@hillonline.net. Please include “STARK 2019” in the subject line.

We look forward to seeing you at Louisiana High School on January 12th.

A couple items to point out as registration continues:

1) STARK is the successor to Hannibal's tournament, TWAIN. I am appreciative of Hannibal HS's administration for their support of TWAIN the previous two seasons.
2) Teams are not considered in the field unless and until signed up through our Google form, and I send you a confirmation e-mail. I will indicate interested teams, but in the interests of uniformity, I need all registrations to take place through the linked form.

The initial field cap has been met. If we are able to attract additional staff we will consider a field expansion to 28, 32, and then finally 36 teams.

We've expanded the field to 28. An expansion to 32 is likely, and depending on further staff commitments, we could expand to 36.

(UPDATE) We're expanding to 32. 36 remains an option, but is our absolute max.

We have received sanctioning from MSHSAA, allowing us to host out-of-state teams.

Three spots remain in our current field. Again we hope to expand to 36 with enough buzzer sets and staff.

Weather forecasts are not looking positive for this weekend. As it's still too early to know for sure what exactly (if anything) will be coming through, as of this post, we are continuing our preparations for STARK.

Having said that, we are advising everyone that we have selected a fallback date of Saturday, February 9th in the event inclement weather prevents us from hosting STARK this weekend. Unfortunately, this fallback date will conflict with NAQT's college sectional tournament at Mizzou and an ACT testing date.

Should weather force us to postpone STARK, we will send an e-mail and text message to all coaches and staff. Louisiana R-II administrators may also inform area broadcast media outlets of the postponement. I will send a mass text Wednesday early afternoon to make sure we have everyone’s cell phone number. If you need to update your contact information, please contact LHS Coach Malia Jolly or me as soon as possible with these details.

Until then, we continue to look forward to seeing you in Louisiana this Saturday. If you haven’t done so already, please submit your rosters ahead of time; you will have the opportunity to update them when you check in.

Per the recommendation of the Louisiana R-II Administration, the Scholastic Tournament Acclaiming the Recall of Knowledge (STARK) is hereby postponed to February 9th, 2019. Additional e-mails concerning the rescheduling will be sent later this weekend. Stay warm this weekend, and "Be Safe, Be Smart!"

With all teams accounted for after the postponement, our field presently stands at 27. Louisiana is able to field a team if necessary to get the field to an even number, but we'll be happy to add anymore squads if schools are still looking for a tournament on February 9th.

STARK at Louisiana HS - 9th February 2019

Post by L-Town Expatriate »

Because of a weather-related drop, we have 26 teams competing. The prelims consisted of four pools of five and a fifth pool of six. Prelim stats are up.

The top two teams from each pool, as well as the top two third-place teams, advanced to three playoff pools of four. They are as follows:
Red Delicious - Hallsville B, Helias Catholic, Macomb A, Quincy A
Golden Delicious - Hallsville A, Macomb B, Moberly, Palmyra A
Granny Smith - Mexico A, Orchard Farm A, Rochester, Wellsville

No games are carrying over. The top team in each pool, along with the top second-place team, will advance to the top superplayoff pool.

Sam Lockwood of Hallsville led all individuals with 146¼ points per game, followed by Moberly's Brennan Sapp with 109 ppg.

Well, Mother Nature finally cooperated for a Saturday! And what a weekend it was, thanks to everyone's participation in the inaugural Scholastic Tournament Acclaiming the Recall of Knowledge!

We needed 13 rounds to determine a champion, with Macomb A powering past Hallsville A to win. Rochester defeated Orchard Farm A to claim third. Moberly, Hallsville B and Quincy A should also receive bids to the PACE National Scholastic Championship this June in Reston, Virginia.
Stats: CombinedPrelimsAdditional Reports

Remember that these questions are being played elsewhere this season, so do not discuss question content with anyone that has not played on the set. If you do have any comments you'd like to leave about this set, the writers have asked that you leave comments on this Google sheet: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIp ... g/viewform You can also request to join a private discussion forum on the HSQB forums.

A special thanks to all our tournament staff: Scott Allen, Margaret Avery, Audrey Brandon, Kathy Brandon, Jackie Cleveland, Jon Deering, Stephanie Hull, Jason Loy, Tom Newman, Elizabeth Newman, Jacob O'Rourke, Sean Phillips, TC Powers, Louis Schnoebelen, Mike Stephens, Kevin Stockman, and Christina Zibart, along with members of the Louisiana High School quiz bowl team, NHS and Interact chapters. Additional thanks go to our intrepid statisticians in tournament central, Michael Powers and Natalie Landwehr, and to the Louisiana Bulldog Boosters for catering a lunch stand thoroughly enjoyed by many teams and staff.

I also wish to especially commend the collaboration I enjoyed with LHS Coach Malia Jolly, who quickly stepped up to host when the spot opened up on the calendar. I also express extreme gratitude to the support and willingness of LHS principal Nick Heggemann, activities director Ryan Griffin, superintendent Dr Todd Smith, and all the staff at Louisiana R-II Schools for opening their campus to the best young minds of Northeast Missouri and Western Illinois. It's my hope that the seeds we planted today will grow into a forest teeming full of knowledge, rooted in the continued success of our young scholars. It is also certainly my hope that we are back here next year for another installment of STARK... and hopefully the weather cooperates!

As always, I close with the benediction of my late freshman journalism adviser: "Be Safe! Be Smart!"

Best Regards,
Kyle Hill
