Inaugural MOQBA Singles Championship (May 22, 2010)
Hello quizbowlers!
I am excited to be able to officially announce the first ever MOQBA Singles Championship, which will be held as a side event to the Pre-Nationals Tournament at MU. This event will be open to any high schooler, for a cost of $7 per player. Because this is not a team event, we will be running abbreviated matches that are going to be 20 tossups with no bonuses. We are using tossups from Thomas Jefferson Magnet School's winter tournament that was run in Virginia. The exact number of rounds will depend on the final field - however, we intend there to be close to as many rounds as in a standard tournament. With the shorter games, I believe it is possible for us to complete the tournament before most teams would need to eat dinner. If this isn't possible, we may have an option for people to buy delivery pizza and then hold a 30 minute break for dinner during the tournament. I am very pleased to run this event to recognize the stellar individuals that play high school quizbowl. If you are interested in playing, please send me an email at CharlesDeesMOQBA@gmail.com. Hope to see you there!

Is the singles tournament only open to players on teams that qualified for nationals?

Re: Inaugural MOQBA Singles Championship (May 22, 2010)
Ummm, as of now, I wasn't planning on staying for the singles tournament, but if Nick is, then I guess I'm gonna be there regardless of whether or not I play (can't exactly go home without my ride...)
So, I'll have to confirm details (transportation, etc.) but if I'm there, I guess I'll give it a shot (and get slaughtered, but whatever)
[Tentatively signing up, in case the rest of my babbling didn't make sense]

Not gonna contest that, we had a tough enough time taking him on as a team. But no harm in trying if I do end up staying for the tournament.WillHack wrote:Yep, I bet 300 that Grant wins. Sorry, PCH guys.

Ammar, I saw someone who was wearing the exact same HEY! LISTEN! shirt yesterday at Iron Man 2. We made his day by telling him it was awesome.
Oh, and Nick, I was planning to do this anyways, but i hadn't posted here about it before now.
But this'll be fun

I think it would be a fun learing expirience, but living up in the northwest corner really doesnt allow me to be able to make it. Oh well. It would help if we were actually going to the Pre-Nationals Tournament, but we are not.

How late are we talking here? I know it's not exact yet, but do you have a general idea of when it's gonna end? I echo Ammar's question. One of my best friend's graduation parties is the night of the 22nd, so I need to know when the singles tourney will end.

Dammit. Unforeseen conflict came up for this weekend. grr. I guess I'll have to withdraw.

Re: Inaugural MOQBA Singles Championship (May 22, 2010)
That's a shame. Good luck prepping for the HSNCT.
As for information on the schedule - Right now the number of games in the main event is somewhat up in the air. I am expecting to run around 10 games, if the field is 8 teams, in which case I think we will be able to wrap up the main event by 3:30. However, if there is need for a final, that could delay the singles event by up to an hour. If we run 9 rounds and start the singles at four, I am planning on getting out no later than 7, but because it is tossups only I wouldn't be surprised to see us run the singles event ahead of schedule. I would tell all people planning on attending the singles but not the main event to show up in Strickland Hall at 3:45 on Saturday with the intention of having all our payments and schedules dealt with by 4 so you can start playing then, but be aware that you may have to sit around for a little if there is a final being run. Hopefully though, if it is just one game and you show up at 3:45, that game should be close to done. I will post here if we have any changes in plans.

If you are an interested player and you are not in the field yet, I ask that you post here or send me an email at CharlesDeesMOQBA@gmail.com by Thursday at 8 P.M. I need to ensure that I will be able to attract enough staffers to run this event.

My friend Isaac might be going to watch, but he seems reluctant to actually play. He's a bit intimidated by the playing field.

Crossposting from the main event thread:
Just as a notice to teams, after the singles is finished, I will be going to Shakespeare's to eat and invite anybody else who wants to come along and have a sort of quizbowl dinner to celebrate the season ending soon. Obviously I know some of you will have to go to home, but since it will be dinnertime anyway for most of you, if any of you want to stay for that extra hour to unwind, socialize with other quizbowl people, and have some really good pizza, all you need to do is stick around after the tournament and follow me to the restaurant (and bring money for your food).

Re: Inaugural MOQBA Singles Championship (May 22, 2010)
Well, apparently we have some issues popping up last minute:
Due to a little snafu involving tennis, Nick won't be able to make it to either tournament (but only because he's really good at tennis as well, and a conflict came up). So he's off the list for sure. Problem is, his parents were gonna drive. So as of now, we have no idea if either of us can make it to the singles tournament (regular tournament should be fine). Will get back to you with finalized information as soon as possible.
(Sorry, Sabrina... )

AS it stands right now, Liron's parents are unwilling to take both cars/drive separate cars, so we're in a little bit of a pickle with that. Though Ammar tells me Paul and Sean are driving up and back from STL?

If you aren't playing the main event, please meet in room 204 of Strickland Hall no later than 3:45 to begin registration. http://map.missouri.edu/bldgview.php?bldg=37258 can help you find the building, Parking at MU is totally free on Saturdays, so Lot CG-17 is your best option.

Re: Inaugural MOQBA Singles Championship (May 22, 2010)
Today, we managed to pull off this 15 person singles event, and I am excited to say that after 10 rounds where the top four players all had to play tiebreaker rounds, Grant Gates emerged the champion, beating Dylan Becraft 110-60 in the championship. Sabrina Fritz won the third place game over Josh Wen. All of these players put on really marvelous performances today (and they weren't alone, even outside of the top bracket there were some really fun games to read for). You guys should be proud!
Fuller stats coming soon.

We did get you a shirt. You just weren't there to receive it because you bailed.
Lol at Ammar's quote. Rumple es enfadado.
Also, I'd like to comment on the larger-than-usual amount of pop culture stuff on here. It was relieving to finally find out that I'm not carrying around all this knowledge about Halo for no reason. Lol
