2011 Pre-Nationals Tournament at MU (5/21/2011)

Post by Charlie Dees »

Hello everyone!

This year the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance is pleased to be organizing the 2011 Pre-Nationals Tournament, to be held at the University of Missouri on May 21st, 2011. As with last year, this tournament is taking advantage of MSHSAA's new rules allowing teams to play one tournament after districts but before nationals. Unlike last year, this event will not strictly be limited to teams with bids to nationals. This event is intended to both serve as a chance for teams to play one last invitational tournament of their season, and to give teams going to nationals a chance to get back into the game after the late spring lull in tournaments.

This tournament will be a mirror of Prison Bowl written by Hunter College High School's quizbowl team. It will be using strict ACF rules, meaning there will be 20 tossups worth 10 points each in every round. There will be -5 point penalties, and bonuses will be worth 30 points each.

This tournament will be using a rule where each team can have a maximum of 6 players. If you have more than that, do not feel hesitant signing up an extra team so that every player gets more opportunities to participate in games.

We are setting a low field cap at 12 teams because school will be out at Mizzou and we may not have as much access to staff as usual. However, if there is interest from more than 12 teams we will certainly do everything we can to expand the field. Spaces will be allotted on a first-come, first-serve basis, determined by when teams send me an email to register. We will be guaranteeing as close to 10 games as our field size permits.

This event will be using the following fee structure:
The fees are as follows:
$50 base fee for all A teams.
-$5 for any additional teams a school chooses to bring
-$5 for every buzzer system a school brings (maximum 3 per school)*
-$5 for every 100 miles a team travels, one way, as determined by Google Maps
-$10 for every competent moderator a team can provide
* In order to receive the buzzer system discount, the system must be fully functional for 8 players.

We will also be holding the second annual Missouri Quizbowl Alliance Singles Championship immediately after this tournament. More information about that can be found at this link.

If you are interested in registering for this tournament, or you have any questions, please email me at CharlesDeesMOQBA@gmail.com.

I hope to see some of you here in May!

Hopefully, fourth time's the charm.

Now that my car is running, I'll do my best to make it to this tournament.

Very unlikely that I'll be here. It's called we put high school graduation ceremonies on the air, so good chance I'll have to tape some of the major ones that take place on this date. I certainly hope I'm able to attend, as CoMo > Fayetteville.* :D

*If CoMo had a Zaxby's, then it'd read "CoMo >>> Fayetteville"

my coach said he sent an email asking to sign us up for this, but didn't get a response. I guess the field indicates that we have not been signed up. should I tell him to resend the email, since there appears to have been some communication mishap?

I was GOING to take the weekend of May 21 off because I am getting married this weekend (May 14) but because I LOVE my team so much, I think that we are going to register for this tournament. I am checking with my AD to see if we have enough funds to register. If so, I am willing to moderate and we will be bringing a buzzer.

Chekhov, Bayer, you owe me one. An all inclusive trip to Jamaica would be nice..........

Please make sure to have your coach email me because I have not heard anything official yet from either Eureka or Villa Duchesne, which are schools that both have students who've told me they are interested in attending Pre-Nationals.

Villa is currently in a holding pattern for a few days, until we can get a third player (coach's rule...), but I/he will let you know by Monday. Also, if my team cannot come, I am definitely interested in staffing and playing the singles tournament that night.

Hopefully you got my message, but just so everybody knows, I would like everybody to show up as close to 8 AM as possible. The sooner we can get everything started, the better because we have to cram 2 tournaments in before dinner.

If you can make it, that would be really cool, be warned though that spots are pretty tight and the field may fill very soon.

I just wanted to announce that it looks like we will have enough staff that we can run an extra room in the playoffs, meaning we should be able to expand to 14 teams. There are a few additions to the field so I think we will for sure hit the 12 team cap, but there is still room for some more currently unregistered teams like Eureka, Villa, and South Pemiscot.

Question: did Villa register? You have us on the field list, but you just said we were unregistered, and I haven't spoken with my coach yet.

No, we're splitting into 2 pools of 7 followed by a cross bracket. The top 8 teams will still all play each other by the end of the day.

After a long day of quizbowl, I'm finally ready to post another update. After a very competitive playoff, Clayton emerged the champion over Rock Bridge A after they both had a single loss during the day. Jefferson City placed third overall. I really had a blast reading for so many teams playing so well on this set and I am excited to see how everybody does at nationals. I also want to thank everybody who came out to staff this tournament, and especially Donald Taylor who came all the way from Iowa to do our statistics excellently. We raised a lot of money for this year's All-Star team to travel to D.C. which I think is really awesome, so I want to again thank all the teams for helping out with that. This has been the best year for Missouri quizbowl ever, by far.

Here are the stats -

I had a blast staffing this tournament. It was amazing how competitive all of the games were, and the teams that went into the playoff bracket really had to work to earn it.

This tournament was a lot of fun. Much thanks to everyone who showed up and staffed.
also, comparing the stats for this with that of the actual tournament (which had some really upper echelon teams), it's clear that the MO teams have a lot of work to do, but actually we're not doing all that badly. games between competitive teams at this mirror generally had total scores in the 500s-600s, whereas the better teams at the actual things played games with score totals in the 600s-700s. comparing some other aspects of the stats, I'd say that while none of the teams at this are good enough to go toe-to-toe with schools like Dorman, LASA, DCC, St. Anselm's etc., we're definitely moving up in the ranks. at the very least, I'd expect MO to do way better at both PACE and HSCNT than we did at nationals last year.
