2011 MSHSAA Districts question discussion
OK, here's your thread to discuss question content from this year's district set.

In round 2, there was a tossup on "water" that had "drip irrigation" as a clue. In round 4, there was a tossup on irrigation with the "drip type of this" as a clue. Also, were the tossups on "an" and "the" required by MSHSAA? They were pretty laughable in our rounds. But then again, the whole idea of having a "grammar" category sucks.
Re: 2011 MSHSAA Districts question discussion
My favorite was "medium rare." I also thought the math non-calculation was pretty horrendous.

Is it true that the 2nd and 4th quarter toss-ups are going to be IS Sets at State? I have heard different things from different people.
Re: 2011 MSHSAA Districts question discussion
The bonus on British names for driving-related things was pretty ridiculous.

A subjunctive tossup? Really? And one on commas too?

We should certainly have caught this one in set editing; my apologies.Districts round 4 wrote:Basin and furrow are two of the surface varieties of this technique. One especially efficient form is the "drip" technique, minimizing runoff and evaporation. Emission or sprinkler systems can also be used in what agricultural process that delivers water to soil?
I can't find the tossup on "the" right now.Districts round 2 wrote:This word was once used before nouns starting with unaccented syllables beginning with the letter 'h' such as "historian." It is used before "NBA" but not "NATO"--and before "ugly" but not "unique"--due to their pronunciation. Name this indefinite article that precedes vowel sounds.

Yes, those tossups will be from IS #105.ChippytheSavage wrote:Is it true that the 2nd and 4th quarter toss-ups are going to be IS Sets at State? I have heard different things from different people.
Re: 2011 MSHSAA Districts question discussion
The tossup on "the" was in the second quarter of round 5, I think.

Thanks; found it.

Do you have the text of the Pynchon tossup from round 2 I believe? I though it was extra-vague but maybe that's just me.
Re: 2011 MSHSAA Districts question discussion
There was one tossup in the 2nd or 3rd round that began "this british...", which made it sort of obvious to anyone who had cursory knowledge as to what was being said. Also, I would like to see the "screw(driver)" tossup (because that was extremely confusing).

answer: _screw_ (accept _screwdriver_)

I can't find this one in the set; what was the obvious answer?christino wrote:There was one tossup in the 2nd or 3rd round that began "this british...", which made it sort of obvious to anyone who had cursory knowledge as to what was being said.
Re: 2011 MSHSAA Districts question discussion
IIRC, the tossup was in quarter 2, round 3, and was in science, but don't take my word for it
EDIT: I probably remembered this wrong, ignore it if you can.

Nothing in round 3 matches that description.

Re: 2011 MSHSAA Districts question discussion
Ben, what was the answer? You need to give better descriptions than really common opening words for the question to be found.
Re: 2011 MSHSAA Districts question discussion
I couldn't remember the answer, so that's why i asked for it (i tried to be as descriptive as i could be). Apparently, this all went to nowhere, so don't mind this.
Re: 2011 MSHSAA Districts question discussion
Could it have been the question that mentioned Albert's royal consort?
Re: 2011 MSHSAA Districts question discussion
No, because I recall myself getting that question (I was subbed in at the half). Also, was that supposed to be a pyramidal question?
EDIT: guess not

Districts round 2 wrote:Lord Melbourne was the first British prime minister during the reign of what consort of Prince Albert who ruled as queen from 1837 to 1901?
Re: 2011 MSHSAA Districts question discussion
Jeff this is technically an incorrect use of the term "consort." In the British monarchy a consort is someone who is married to the reigning monarch and does not refer to the monarch in relation to a spouse of lower station. In general monarchical terms it applies to the spouse of a ruling power, but since Albert was never actually the reigning Duke of Saxe Coburg Gotha, it fails to apply on that level too.bt_green_warbler wrote:Districts round 2 wrote:Lord Melbourne was the first British prime minister during the reign of what consort of Prince Albert who ruled as queen from 1837 to 1901?

Re: 2011 MSHSAA Districts question discussion
So this obviously means a jump in toss-up difficulty, but what about the bonus questions? Will they jump accordingly, or will they be reminiscent of district and sectionals?

The bonuses will be somewhat more difficult (because they are converted from the easy/medium parts of regular Invitational Series instead of Introductory Invitational Series).
