And yeah, I'll definitely be around for this. And unless any team has some serious pop culture/art deficit they'd like to see filled, I guess I'll be staffing!

Oakville may be sending a team of some sort to this, but we're also open to having students from other schools on our team. (Your move, Will Alexander.)

That's us, if Ladue is sending a team, but I doesn't matter.

Also, this thread should really be renamed to WUSTL Open.

Edit: add last bit+word/phrase choice

By the way, what's the distribution for this set that we're using?

the QUIZMASTER wrote:DISTRIBUTION: For a full packet, we ask for 25 tossups and 25 bonuses per packet, distributed as follows.

A) Literature: 5 tossups, 5 bonuses. Of these, at least 1/1 must be on European works/authors, and at least 1/1 on World (specifically, Asian, African, South American) works authors.

B) Sciences (including math): 5/5. Of these, at least 1/1 each of biology, physics, and chemistry. If you have a second question from any of these categories, try to make them from a different subcategory (e.g. two physics bonuses would be fine, but two on thermodynamics would be sub-optimal).

C) History: 5/5. Of these, no more than 2/2 on US history; at least 1/1 on events/people in the 20th/21st century, at least 1/1 pre-500 CE, and least 1/1 non-Europe/US.

D) Philosophy/religion/myth: 3/3. Of these, not more than 1/2 or 2/1 philosophy; at least one question (tossup or bonus) apiece religion and mythology.

E) Fine arts: 3/3. Of these, at least one question (tossup or bonus) must be on either sculpture or architecture, and no more than 2/2 painting, film, or classical music.

F) Social sciences: 1/1

G) Geography: 1/1

H) Your choice: 2/2. Anything goes, provided the minima amounts above have been provided for. This includes pop culture, current events, or other topics in which you may have already made your maximum.

STYLE: You probably already know the basics, but just in case: --- Tossups -- average length 3 sentences. Please include a unique clue early to avoid any ambiguity. We want questions that begin with lesser-known details and gradually get easier. And please don't violate the pronoun rule -- e.g.,, if your first pronoun is "He..." or "She...", the answer should be a person, not an object or the title of a work. --- Bonuses -- each bonus worth a possible 30 pts., preferably with 3 or 4 related answers.

Fees will be as follows.
  • Base fee: $10 per team + $10 per player up to 4 (i.e. solo teams $20, full teams $50)
  • 5th player: +$20 (please avoid sending teams of more than 4; there's no purpose)
  • 6th player: +$Inf (6-player teams not allowed)
  • Buzzers: -$5, up to 2 per team
  • Laptops: -$5, up to 1 per team
  • Staffers: -$10, up to 1 per team
Format
Given the number of packets available, the field will be capped at 8 unless we can get a full 12 teams. Assuming an 8-team field or smaller, there will be a single round robin with an advantaged final if necessary. In the case of a 12-team field, there will be two brackets of 6 teams, and three playoff brackets of four teams, with prelim results within brackets carrying over to the playoffs.

Kent is going to be playing with me and Matt. And for the record, the team name will be Los Vendidos.

I'm hoping that the entry fees will still be similar to the above.

In an effort to keep a tally of who's coming, I started a field update below. I foresee a four-team quadruple round robin (maybe a six-team triple round robin) being held where stats are completed in between rounds.

Attending
Team Name TBD (Matt Chadbourne/Jacob O'Rourke/Kent Buxton?/Ben Zhang?)
Rock Bridge (1-2?)
Illinois (me, Mark Taylor, Billy Busse, David Garb) [2, maybe 3 buzzers]

Likely Attending
Ladue (Ben Zhang et al; else Ben will play with Matt et al)
High School Collective (Sabrina Fritz and others)

Unlikely
Sam Haynes
Tuscumbia High School?

Free Agents
Kent Buxton? (might be with Matt et al)
William Alexander?

Staffers
Gordon Arsenoff
Charles Hang
William Alexander?
So an update would be:
Roar of the Tamil Tiger Mother (Ben, Max et. al.)
RTTM? (?)
Los Vendidos (Myself, Matt, Alex S. and Kent)
Illinois (Charles Martin and co.)
Rock Bridge (1-2?)
Sailor Scale (Sabrina, Ikshu, Dylan, and Craig)
Team Name TBA (Jason Loy and Caleb Robbins)
Team Name TBA (Michael and Oakville kids)

Staff
Gordon
Charles Hang
Will Alexander
Marshall Mullins

EDIT: Fixed to reflect updates.

Also if some combination of our people attended, we would have to have a non-Ladue name. Perhaps the Tamil Tiger Mothers might resurface.

I'm out of town for the Fourth of July and only really have access to an iPhone, so I'll update my earlier post when I get back to my apartment. For now, I wanted to let people know that I have been in contact with Mike Cheyne about playing VCU Open Trash as a side event after the Moon Pie mirror. If you are interested in doing this (and you won't be playing this tournament at another mirror), let me know. If this side event is run, I (and the three Illinois players who are riding along in my car) will stick around to play.

EDIT: Hooray for making the 10,000th post in this forum.

We'll be there already, and we'll give you a room to report to in the morning to get information. We could also have the pre-tournament briefing in the Fun Room, since you mentioned it--it's big and not that many people will be there at 9 AM.

They could join Caleb Robbins and Jason Loy (if those two are willing to have them).

Also, I edited my earlier post keeping track of teams to provide a link to a spreadsheet that is keeping track of all this stuff. Add in/change team names as you see fit. A "?" indicates that they may come while the absence of a "?" indicates that those players/teams will be showing up.

With Oakville's announcement of a team, we have 8 confirmed teams (I'm assuming that at least one Rock Bridge/Charlie Dees will show up; if they don't, then Illinois could play as two teams of two players so we could avoid byes). A ninth potential team has been added to the wait list section per Gordon's tournament format announcement. I placed the only unconfirmed team on that wait list. Team names can be adjusted at will.

If you want to play VCU Open Trash, inform enough other people about it such that Gordon obtains a few/several packets from Mike Cheyne (depending on how many people are interested).

If you want to play Mike Bentley's VETO packet, let Jacob O'Rourke know. He has requested to read the packet. I will stick around to play this packet. I don't know how many other people at this site will want to play it, but we will need more readers if a bunch of people want to play. I figure it'll be a shootout type thing if only a small number of people are interested in hearing it.

We will also need two more buzzer sets. If WUSTL provides two buzzers, then we should be set.

I have updated the WUSTL Open spreadsheet to keep track of VETO and VCU Open Trash players. Since we are just accumulating lists of interested players for now, I put NO TEAM NAME in the team name column until there are enough people playing to break out teams ahead of time. Right now both are small enough for a shootout.

Details

The day's events will be held on the second floor of the Danforth University Center (DUC) on the Wash. U. campus. A Google map of Wash. U. locations can be found here; scroll down to Danforth University Center to find it.

Teams will meet in the Fun Room in the DUC at the beginning of the day. Registration will open up at 8:30. All teams and staff are to be present by 9:00 am for general meeting. Round 1 will begin at 9:30 am.

Park in any Yellow permit space. Yellow permit status is not enforced on weekends, though this feature is undocumented. The lot behind the business school, adjacent to the DUC, is mostly Yellow.

There are lunch options available within the DUC on the first floor, and next door at Subway in the Mallinckrodt Center. If teams would be receptive, I'd just as soon schedule a very short lunch break to allow teams to go pick up food and bring it back to eat in the next round; if that sounds objectionable, we won't try it.

Moar Details

All staff: please bring laptops if you can.
All teams: remember, there is a laptop discount.

There's a bunch of road and sidewalk construction going on right around the DUC, but parking is still possible.

Assuming it doesn't start before ~4:15ish I should be able to play the trash too. I'm unfortunately not going to be able to help much at the tournament proper, bc I couldn't get out of work that day, but on the plus side work is in the next building:).
