NAQT High School National Championship Tournament

Post by Charlie Dees »

Today is the opening of registration for NAQT's National Championship in Atlanta. We are sending the following 8 teams from Missouri -

Eureka
Heartland
Ladue Horton Watkins
Liberty
North Kansas City
North Shelby
Park Hill South
Savannah

Everybody plays 10 prelim rounds and the 6-4 or better teams all advance to a double elimination playoff on Sunday (and 6-4 teams enter with a built in loss). North Shelby is also eligible for the small school title, where they can advance to the playoffs if they go 4-6 or better.

Every year everybody has predictions for our teams, so I'm curious to hear what people think will happen this year. I may have some predictions later.

Also, everybody going should please update us on your status as the tournament gets underway. Do really well guys!

There is another official blog of the tournament this year You can read it at http://hsnct.wordpress.com/

The coach of New Trier High School is also organizing a match tracker to help you follow what teams are playing who. You can read about that here - http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewto ... =2&t=11544

North Shelby reportedly scrimmaged Copley from Ohio (a high end team) and they lost. I will report any other scrimmage results I hear about here.

We won all three of our scrimmages against (a two man) LASA B, Bellaire B, and Solon A. Our highest score was 230, I think. Our bonus conversion generally sucked, and there were some very strange bonus formats.

I hear Park Hill South went 2-1 and I presume the loss was to Illinois Math & Science Academy, a really good (possibly better than Carbondale) team from Illinois.

The irrelevant historian in me is giddy to see this result. Payback for their less humid climate poaching the Chiefs from Jewell in '90.

Aside from that, impressive job by Ladue, Savannah & Northtown. Represent!

In related news, Zev won a music listening competition tonight, which is cool.

Also, while I am around to note it, I hope that these results will help demonstrate to teams what is obviously becoming the way to be a competitive team in Missouri. It just becomes more and more obvious that the more seriously a team takes pyramidal, non-MSHSAA tournaments, the better they become across the board, looking at the teams that went here that make a point of focusing on MOQBA events and comparing their results to the teams that have not gone to as many events. Ladue never went to a single event that was not run by MOQBA except for the MSHSAA series, yet they embarrassed everybody and broke a bunch of "untouchable" records, all while entirely being a team of sophomores and freshmen, because they choose to not focus on MSHSAA quizbowl. Savannah also put up very high scores en route to winning their class of MSHSAA state as well, then also won NAQT state and made the playoffs of nationals. North Kansas City making the playoffs here after having spent the season gradually improving, and the fact they ended up doing better than other Kansas City teams here shows that playing more of our events against the tougher competition we offer helped give them the kind of experience to pull out key wins under pressure to place much higher than teams without that experience.

Given that these playoff teams are just a small sample of the most competitive teams that prioritize MOQBA events (so many of the rest going to PACE next weekend), there is an ever growing disparity which will become even greater over the next few years, which will lead to teams that focus on MSHSAA and other speed-based formats not only remaining uncompetitive in a national sense also losing the MSHSAA series they are prioritizing their schedule. There will be no real choice but to become a team that prepares for pyramidal events or become an increasingly uncompetitive team. I want as many teams as possible to become competitive, so I urge teams reading this wondering how they can improve to bear all this in mind.

Good morning. Play should be beginning shortly down in Atlanta, and before it does I'd once again like to congratulate the three Missouri teams on advancing and wish them luck today. I'd also like to congratulate the five other Missouri teams on their results yesterday. You all have accomplished a lot and have truly represented the state well.
