Split from predictions thread - jmh

I don't know where else to post it - District 5 was Eureka over Washington.

Finish:

Eureka 3-0
Washington 1-2
Pacific 0-2

Hickman beat Rock Bridge in our district's final. Also, I am infinitely amused at how little interest there seems to be in discussing districts on these fora anymore.

Not just districts: it seems like the discussion volume in general is a lot lower than in years past.

Per Liberty Scholar Bowl's Facebook Page:
"Liberty Scholar Bowl won 1st place at Districts today! We won all 5 rounds, scoring over 500 points in all of them and over 600 in two. We faced Liberty North final round, winning 540-250"

MSHSAA have Liberty winning 490-260, but nonetheless Blue Jays prevail in Class 4, District 15.

Infinitely amused? More like give everyone involved in promoting 20/20-format tournaments a fist bump, high five, bear hug, etc. for rendering the current MSHSAA format an afterthought. Districts & state are about as relevant now as the duties of Liberty's elected constable.

That Web site is hopeless when it comes to bothering with preliminary scores. If you didn't make top four, you're marked as "withdrawn".

Did anyone else feel that the questions were extra horrendous this year? MSHSAA seemed to be doing Questions Galore style on the only tossup quarters and then the tossups with bonuses were like NAQT questions with only the first and last line of the question. Almost every question was a buzzer race. Not to mention that the bonuses were so ridiculously easy that getting a tossup with bonus is almost a guaranteed thirty points.
Decent teams could combine for 700 points and good teams could easily get 800 combined (total possible is 900). The vast majority of the questions were just too ridiculously easy. And math computation sucks as usual, although I found myself getting a lot of them.
I have barely played MSHSAA format questions, but districts questions this year seemed extra horrible. I didn't even feel bad losing, because half of losing the game is just losing buzzer races.

Sharjeel, that's actually how the sets have always looked when NAQT took over. The first and third quarters are always a single line, and the 2nd and 4th quarters were always around 3 lines (taken from NAQT's A-sets). They are astoundingly easy, which is good for the overwhelming group of districts that are bad at quizbowl but bad for districts like ours that have a lot of good teams. They're not the greatest, that's for sure, but that's what happens when you write for MSHSAA in the first place.

This goes to explain how Washington's team, though the older kids have only a very limited amount of experience in longer questions, was able to spot teams 30-40 points in quarters 1 and 3, and then come back in quarters 2 and 4. The most experienced pyramid-style player on the squad, one of my 8th graders last year, racked up 12-14 tossups as a freshman.

Did your A-team play? These scores seem low for you all, but the questions did seem easier this year.
