MSHSAA reporting that Seneca forfeited their sectional contest against Hollister. Seneca defeated Diamond for their district title. *grumble*

Per LHS Scholar Bowl's Facebook Page:
"Liberty Scholar Bowl won Sectionals against Staley High School today, 2-1. Lost by 50, won by 30, won by 80. Pretty intense since we had a few members that were gone or could only show up for one round."
This is the lone sectional yet to be reported on MSHSAA's site, as of the time of this post.

Is there a private discussion forum for the questions at Districts/Sectionals?

I haven't set one up but I can this evening, assuming that is still OK with NAQT.

Private discussion has been set up. If you were in last year's group you should have access already. If you attended districts or sectionals, you may request access to the private discussion forum. Go to the usergroups page, find 2013 MSHSAA question discussion, and select Join. Jeff or a board administrator must approve your request before you can view the forum.

This is kind of a stupid question, but why are the state pairings posted here different from the bracket on the MSHSAA website?

State isn't 8 team single elimination, but I'm guessing since the championship series for most sports use single elimination it just uses the same system for displaying results on the website. (When is there "paid attendance" at a quizbowl match?) The 3 prelim matches are pre-determined (see PDF page 10 (numbered page 9) of the Scholar Bowl manual). That "round" of the bracket only shows the 8 teams participating in the prelims of State. (for instance, if you look here, Truman comes out as the "winner" of the game between DeSmet and Rock Bridge, so there's kind of a break in the bracket there where the prelims take place. It's also just coincidence that those line up with the 1st round matches in an even year)

There doesn't appear to be a "tournament central" link this year. The final fours for Classes one and two are up, though.

http://www.mshsaa.org/Activities/Distri ... =1&class=2

Pilot Grove is playing in the Class one championship.

The first two moderators Kirksville had were some of the worst I've ever heard. And I'm including some of the ones I had in high school in East-Central Missouri who would mispronounce potpourri! And our second-round moderator had to consult on a protest that should have taken a second to resolve!

Note to Kirksville's Round 3 Moderator: THANK YOU! You were an excellent reader. Seriously, I hope they ask you to come back and help out. You helped to make that day a bit less full of headaches for me.

I also was less than impressed with several of the moderators (including their attentiveness to incorrect answers...). How is it determined who will moderate for this, just out of curiosity?

I asked Stacy Schroeder about the best way to officially commend/complain about a state moderator and she recommended that I send her an email (stacy@MSHSAA.org). I don't know how effective this would be to ensure bad readers don't return (since some of them have been around for a long time) but I can't help but think several emails regarding the same reader(s) would at least get the message across.

According to the schedule, Kirksville's readers would have been Sheila Berkowitz and Sam Berkowitz in rounds 1 and 2, respectively. We had one of them during the Class 1 preliminaries, and the entire game was poorly read and poorly managed.

Kirksville's round 3 reader would have been Mike Kaiman, who also read for us in the prelims. He was excellent--great pace, intonation, and attitude. It actually seemed like a state-level game in that room.

I would encourage anyone with similar experiences to email Schroeder with specific names and/or round numbers of moderators, both good and bad. If the state competition in Missouri has to be in such an awkward format, at the very least it would be nice if it were consistently well-officiated.

Moderator ratings really need to become a standard in any circuit. It's ridiculous that MSHSAA would have officiating standards in place (namely those the NFHS has established alongside coaching associations and national/global governing bodies) for most sports down to junior high C-team volleyball games, but when it comes to state tournaments for scholar bowl, it's the buddy system.

Flooding Stacy's inbox would help, especially if she needs the support to turn down the continued assistance of a couple who have been involved with quiz bowl for decades. But in the long run, a standard rating scheme should be devised, and if necessary certification standards, training programs, etc. (Granted, I can't think what training programs would do, other than provide crash courses on phonetics, acceptable answers, and other nuances.)
