2015 NAQT Missouri Qualifier - March 7 at Mizzou

Post by Jeffrey Hill »

The Missouri Quizbowl Alliance would like to invite all MSHSAA-registered high school Scholar Bowl teams to participate in the 2015 NAQT Missouri Qualifier, which will be held on the campus of the University of Missouri in Columbia on March 7, 2015.

The Missouri Quizbowl Alliance is an organization dedicated to providing high-quality quizbowl tournaments to all Missouri teams. As MOQBA's flagship event, this tournament regularly features a diverse field of teams from throughout Missouri, creating a championship atmosphere and recognizing the state's top teams for national tournament qualification. Jeffrey Hill and Alex Dzurick will serve as tournament directors of this official NAQT event, which will use untimed NAQT rules only modified where necessary to comply with MSHSAA requirements.

This tournament will be run in the twenty tossup/bonus format on NAQT Invitational Series #144. This question set is not expected to be assigned to any other tournaments in Missouri, but teams are still responsible for ensuring that they attend no more than one tournament using IS-144. Games consist of twenty tossups worth ten points each followed by non-rebounding bonuses worth up to thirty points. Tossups will feature "powers" (additional points awarded for correct buzzes early in the question) and "negs" (five point deductions for incorrect answers before the question is finished). All teams will be guaranteed at least 9 games throughout the day.

For full details about the tournament and to register, visit http://www.moqba.org/qualifier/2015/. We will only be accepting registrations through the online registration form. Please note that we have made some changes that may affect schools that intend to register multiple teams. This tournament traditionally fills very quickly, and a limited number of openings remain as several teams have already registered, so we strongly recommend that you reserve your spots now.

We hope to see you and your teams in Columbia in March and wish you the best of luck as you compete this season. If you have any questions about the tournament, don't hesitate to ask us at qualifier@moqba.org or post in this thread.

Sincerely,
Jeffrey Hill and Alex Dzurick

The last spot has been claimed by New Haven, which reminded me that I forgot to mark which schools are eligible for the small school title. The field has been updated to reflect this. We have 24 teams from 20 different schools, including 11 teams from 9 eligible small schools!

Thanks to all of the schools and other volunteers who have already brought us to a total of 20 game room staffers. We are well on our way to expanding to 30, 32, or 36 teams, but we will wait until we have confirmed facilities and an abundance of confirmed staff to be able to run a larger tournament efficiently. A field expansion may not officially occur until late January or early February, but we encourage all interested teams to register soon so that you may claim an early spot on the waitlist and get earlier notice of an opening. Remember that offering to provide a competent scorekeeper or experienced moderator will earn you a higher spot on the waitlist, and registering before January 1 will allow your first team to join the waitlist ahead of the B teams already waitlisted, even if you do not provide a staffer.

We just got a report from a coach that they attempted to register, but we never received their registration through the form. I just tested the form and it saved my information as expected, so I'm not sure what happened. The field listed above is still up-to-date; we have not received any registrations since December 14. If you attempted to register but are not listed above, please try completing the form again and also contact us at qualifier@moqba.org.

We are pleased to announce that the field has been expanded to 32 teams, so all waitlisted teams are now able to claim a spot in the field. We have 31 teams total, so there is still an opening available!

This tournament has been officially sanctioned by MSHSAA.

This tournament has also been platinum-certified by PACE, meaning that the top 25% of the field will qualify for the PACE National Scholastic Championship on June 6-7 in Reston, VA (Washington DC area).

Coaches of registered teams will receive an email update within the next week.

QUICK UPDATE

Round 6 has begun.

Rounds 1-5 finished in a combined total of 149 minutes, just shy of 30 minutes average per round. That's not possible without our AWESOME staff. More thanks to come.

After lunch, during the presentation of awards, Jared Lockwood was awarded the 2015 MOQBA Award for Outstanding Student Involvement.

Consolation brackets are in the middle of Round 10. Not sure what things look like for the championship playoffs.

I witnessed a rare sight yesterday afternoon as everyone was congregating in the second floor hallway: a tournament director smiling with great content in the midst of a major tournament, even if the hallway was a Plan B gathering spot. That couldn't have happened without the vision of several determined people, the willingness of many volunteers to spend most of a pleasant pre-Spring Saturday inside, and the eagerness of students and coaches who take pride in this activity, and it all coming together in such a brilliant, efficient manner. My only regret from the day: not snapping a photo of the moment. Job well done everyone!

Thank you once again to all coaches, students, and spectators for attending the 2015 NAQT Missouri Qualifier on Saturday. We hope that you enjoyed participating in the tournament as much as we enjoyed directing it!

After round 10, Hallsville A, Hickman A, Savannah, and Rock Bridge B advanced to the superplayoffs. After round 11, Hickman A and Rock Bridge B both had losses to Hallsville A and Savannah, so their scheduled round 12 game was effectively for third place, which Hickman won 410-145. Hallsville A and Savannah were undefeated, effectively starting a best of three final. Hallsville won the first two games 465-225 and 355-200 to win the overall NAQT Missouri Qualifier title for the second consecutive year, as well as the small school championship for the third consecutive year!

Links to the complete statistics are available at http://q.moqba.org/.

The top 15% (4 teams) qualified for the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament on May 29-31 in Chicago. Congratulations to Hallsville, Savannah, Hickman, and Rock Bridge for qualifying one team each at this tournament. Fifth place teams Helias A and Webster Groves have already qualified at previous tournaments. Because this is the official NAQT State Qualifier for Missouri, a bid is awarded to the top team that had not previously qualified, so both teams tied for 7th (Brookfield and a second team from Rock Bridge) have also qualified for HSNCT!

Of our 26 teams, we once again had 11 small school-eligible teams, continuing Missouri's tradition of strong quizbowl participation by smaller schools. The top 15% of small school teams (2 teams) have also qualified for the NAQT Small School National Championship Tournament on April 24-26 in Atlanta. Congratulations to Brookfield and defending small school national champions Hallsville for qualifying for SSNCT!

Since this tournament is platinum certified by PACE, the top 25% (7 teams) qualified for the PACE National Scholastic Championship in the Washington D.C. area on June 6-7. Congratulations to Hallsville A, Savannah, Hickman A, Rock Bridge B, Helias A, Webster Groves, and Rock Bridge A for earning bids to NSC! (PACE's instructions were to break the tie for 7th place by points per game.)

During the awards ceremony, we presented the fourth MOQBA Award for Outstanding Student Involvement to Hallsville senior Jared Lockwood for his many efforts to encourage participation in quizbowl by elementary and middle school students. We thank Jared for his work to promote quizbowl to younger students, and look forward to recognizing more outstanding students in the future.

Thanks to the cooperation of everyone in attendance and the talents of the entire tournament staff, we were able to complete the round 13 finals match by 4:15. The staffers who made this possible were Samuel and Colton from Hallsville; Sherry and Franziska from Hickman; coaches April Murdock and Allison Graves from Washington, Greg Irwin from Rock Bridge, Ryan Kennedy from Centralia, and Scott Allen from Hallsville; Michael Menkhus, Andrew Ludwig, Evan McWilliams, Richard Yu, and Gordon Arsenoff; and fellow MOQBA members Kevin Stockman, Jacob Billingsley, Sam Haynes, Jacob O'Rourke, Matt Chadbourne, and Jason Loy. Special thanks go to Itamar Naveh-Benjamin, Sean Phillips, Alex Smith, Stephanie Hull, and Kyle Hill for not only staffing the tournament, but also performing additional duties before the event to make this tournament possible.

The lack of access to an auditorium was not ideal, but it seemed like holding the awards in the second floor hallway worked out fine given the circumstances. Thanks to Kyle Hill and Washington coach David Dennis for providing the audio equipment. We will be exploring options to avoid this situation in the future.

Thank you once again for attending. We hope to see everyone again next year! If you have any feedback about how this tournament ran, please don't hesitate to let us know.

Sincerely,
Jeffrey Hill and Alex Dzurick
2015 NAQT Missouri Qualifier co-directors
