Central Methodist University Fall Invitational

Post by abrandon »

Academic Coaches,

The Missouri Quizbowl Alliance and Central Methodist University of Fayette welcome your team to join others from across the region at our inaugural CMU Fall Invitational, scheduled for November 17th, 2018. Our tournament will consist of a minimum of eight games for all teams in a modified NAQT/national format:
[*]Each game shall consist of two halves of ten tossups each, with each correct tossup followed by a three-part bonus.
[*]Correct tossup answers are ten points each, with an additional five points awarded if a tossup is correctly answered prior to a predetermined “power” mark. All tossups are five seconds, and there are no math computation tossups.
[*]Unlike other national tournaments, we will NOT assess a five-point penalty for interrupting the moderator during the tossup with an incorrect answer.
[*]The team that receives the bonus will have five seconds to answer each part. The moderator will prompt after four seconds. In the event a bonus part is computation, the team will receive 10 seconds to answer instead of 15.
[*]Each incorrect bonus part will immediately rebound, with the rebounding team expected to provide an answer within three seconds. Unless otherwise specified in a bonus set, each bonus part shall be ten points each.
[*]In the event a game is tied after regulation, additional tossups shall be read until the next change in score.
[*]Each team shall have one 30 second timeout per half. Substitutions, scorechecks, and team conferences may occur at the half, prior to overtime, or during any timeout called by either team.
[*]Teams rosters shall be limited to seven players; schools are encouraged to bring junior varsity and “B” teams to compete. Teams may play with fewer than four players but must have at least two players. Rosters shall be submitted in advance and finalized at registration the morning of the tournament. Players may not change teams during the tournament.

We have secured the ATHENA set. More information is available at http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewto ... 09&t=20712. At present tournaments this fall at Washington University in St Louis and Fort Osage are using this set; if you plan to attend either of these events, you will be unable to compete at our tournament. We anticipate our event receiving certification from the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence, allowing us to serve as a qualifier for the National Scholastic Championship, set for June 8-9 in Reston, Va.

We are limiting the field to a firm cap of 12 teams. Additional teams will be placed on a waitlist and contacted should an opening occur. Because of the firm cap, schools may enter no more than two teams. If you wish to field more, your additional teams will be added to our waitlist and may be added if openings remain after November 1st.

Teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for at least three afternoon games. This setup is subject to change, depending on the number of teams signed up. We plan to start the team meeting at 8:30 a.m., with the first round set for 8:50 a.m. and afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. With the exception of any playoff games for trophies, we anticipate the last game ending around 4 p.m.

Fee structure is as follows, per school:
[*]First team: $65
[*]Additional teams: $60
[*]Discount for travelling more than 100 miles each way (determined by Google Maps): $10
[*]Discount for providing a working buzzer set: $5 (maximum $10)
[*]Discount for providing competent staff: negotiable
[*]All discounts are subject to the discretion of tournament officials.
Proceeds from this year’s tournament will benefit the Taylor Gilpin Wallace Foundation for Suicide Prevention, established in memory of Brookfield High School alumnus Taylor Wallace. More details about the foundation are available at http://tgw-fsp.com/.

The CMU Fall Invitational will take place in the newly renovated Stedman Hall of Science, in the center of the main campus in Fayette. There should be no issue with parking as many students will have departed for Thanksgiving Break. Buses should park in the Reynolds Street baseball/softball parking lot, down the hill from Stedman. Fayette is located at the intersection of Highway 240 and Highway 5, about 35 minutes northwest of Columbia. Quick lunch options in Fayette include a Subway and a Breadeaux Pizza on the square, a Dairy Queen on Highway 5, and a Casey’s and a C&R with a deli on Church Street.

The tournament is under the direction of CMU student and Missouri Quizbowl Alliance member Andrey Brandon. MOQBA is an organization dedicated to promoting quality scholar bowl tournaments around the state. Several MOQBA members will be among the tournament staff.

We look forward to seeing you at Central Methodist University on November 17th.

Stats can be found here: http://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/54 ... all_games/

It was a good first run for CMU as a host site. Moberly cleared the field 10-0 to take home first place over Mexico's second place finish. Stellar job to all teams, and best of luck with the rest of your seasons!
