North Kansas City JV Feb. 16th

Post by pat.okeefe »

Coaches:

We will be hosting our annual JV Scholar Bowl Tournament on February 16th, 2019 at North Kansas City High School. Please use the link below to register your team:

The tournament will be a mirror of the SCOP Novice 8 set produced by the Scholastic Community Outreach Program of Illinois, which is specially written to appeal to newer or inexperienced players. At the time of this announcement, this set is also assigned to these other Missouri tournaments:
• Moberly SCOP Novice 9 on January 19th

Last year’s set can be viewed here:

This tournament will have eligibility restrictions:
• All freshmen may play.
• Sophomores may play if they did not attend a national tournament (NAQT HSNCT, NAQT SSNCT, or PACE NSC) in their freshman year.
• Juniors may play if this is their first year of QuizBowl.
• No seniors may play.
We will be limiting teams to a maximum of six players, so if you have more than six players, please do not feel hesitant about signing up a second or even third team! The extra playing time will be an invaluable experience for your novice players!

Each round will consist of 20 tossup questions with 3-part bonuses should a team answer a tossup correctly. The tournament will use 15-point "powers" (reward for an early enough buzz), but will not be using "negs". Bonuses will be rebounding. There is no computational math in the SCOP Novice Tournament set.

The field will be capped at 24 teams. Teams will be divided into preliminary pools that will each play a round robin in the morning, after which all teams will be re-bracketed into playoff and consolation pools for the afternoon. All teams will be guaranteed approximately 8-9 matches throughout the day. Registration will be from 8:00 to 8:30, with a brief team meeting around 8:30 before round 1 begins by 9:00. We anticipate finishing the afternoon rounds around 4:00 PM, with the top couple of teams possibly playing another match or two after that. In order to provide the best experience and maximum playing time to all participants and to keep scheduling predictable, all teams are expected to return from lunch to play all of their scheduled matches.

Oakville High School also used SCOP 9 for their tournament on November 3, and it looks like Tuscumbia is also using the set in late January (although I'm not sure if it's for their usual Saturday tournament or an after school event).

The tournament is cancelled due to a limited number of teams that signed up. We will move our JV tournament back to November next year and hope people can attend our Varsity tournament on March 30th!
