North Kansas City Varsity March 30

Post by pat.okeefe »

Coaches:
We will be hosting our Varsity Scholar Bowl Tournament on March 30, 2019 at North Kansas City High School. This will be a National Qualifier for the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament hosted in Atlanta, GA on Memorial Day weekend.

The tournament will be a mirror of the NAQT IS-181 set produced by NAQT. At the time of this announcement, this set is also assigned to these other Missouri tournaments:
Springfield Kickapoo: Dec. 2018
Hickman: Feb. 2019
Orchard Farm: March 2019

If you have attended or are planning to attend one of these tournaments or any other tournament using this NAQT set, your team is ineligible to participate in this tournament. Question set assignments are subject to change at any time; more information about the NAQT set and a complete list of tournaments using the set are available on their website.

We will be limiting teams to a maximum of six players, so if you have more than six players, please do not feel hesitant about signing up a second team!

Each round will consist of 20 tossup questions with 3-part bonuses should a team answer a tossup correctly. The tournament will use 15-point "powers" (reward for an early enough buzz), and five point "negs" (deductions for incorrect answers by the first team to answer before the entire question has been read). Bonuses will be rebounding.

The field will be capped at 24 teams, but if demand is high enough it may be expanded if staffing allows. Allow me to encourage any coaches or experienced parents in helping us moderate, having experienced readers helps keep the flow of the tournament steady and we would greatly appreciate the extra help!

Teams will be divided into preliminary pools that will each play a round robin in the morning, after which all teams will be re-bracketed into playoff and consolation pools for the afternoon. All teams will be guaranteed approximately 8-9 matches throughout the day. Registration will be from 8:00 to 8:30, with a brief team meeting around 8:30 before round one begins by 9:00. We anticipate finishing the afternoon rounds around 4:30 PM, with the top couple of teams possibly playing another match or two after that. In order to provide the best experience and maximum playing time to all participants and to keep scheduling predictable, all teams are expected to return from lunch to play all of their scheduled matches.

For lunch, there are a number of different restaurants within walking distance or a short drive off Armour Road (Wendy’s, Dairy Queen, Subway, McDonalds, Burger King, Pizza Hut, QuikTrip, and Sonic).

To register, please use this registration form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIp ... sp=sf_link

*Note that you are not considered officially registered until you receive an email from us that your spots in the field are confirmed. A physical invoice will then be emailed to teams after their registration is confirmed if it is needed for payment.
