2020 Palmyra Academic Winter Showdown (PAWS) - 8th February, Palmyra HS

Post by L-Town Expatriate »

On behalf of the members of Palmyra High School Scholar Bowl, I am thrilled to welcome your team to join others from across Northeast Missouri, Western Illinois and beyond at the inaugural Palmyra Academic Winter Showdown (PAWS), scheduled for February 8th, 2020. PAWS will follow in the steps of predecessor tournaments STARK and TWAIN in consisting of a minimum of eight games for all teams in a modified NAQT/national format:
  • Each game shall consist of two halves of ten tossups each, with each correct tossup followed by a three-part bonus.
  • Correct tossup answers are ten points each, with an additional five-point “Power” for correct answers given prior to a pre-determined point in a tossup. All tossups are five seconds, and there are no math computation tossups.
  • Unlike other national-formatted tournaments, we will not assess a five-point penalty for interrupting the moderator during the tossup with an incorrect answer.
  • The team that receives the bonus will have five seconds to answer each part. The moderator will prompt after four seconds. Bonus parts will NOT rebound. Unless otherwise specified in a bonus set, each bonus part shall be ten points each.
  • In the event a game is tied after regulation, additional tossups shall be read until the next change in score.
  • Each team shall have one 30 second timeout per half. Substitutions, scorechecks, and team conferences may occur at the half, prior to overtime, or during any timeout called by either team. A scorecheck other than at halftime or end of regulation will require the use of a team’s timeout.)
  • Teams rosters shall be limited to seven players; schools are encouraged to bring junior varsity and “B” teams to compete. Four players per team shall play at a time; teams may play with fewer than four players, but we ask that teams have at least two players. Rosters shall be submitted in advance and finalized at registration the morning of the tournament. Players may not change teams during the tournament.
We have secured the CALISTO Set, written by a consortium of quiz bowl players from California. More information is available at https://hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewtopic ... 09&t=22832. Other tournaments using this set include Fort Osage MARS in Missouri and Loyola Ultima in Illinois; if you wish to attend PAWS, you will not be able to compete in these or any other event using CALISTO. We anticipate PAWS serving as a qualifier for the PACE National Scholastic Championship in Chicago.

We have set an initial field limit of 24 teams; this may expand depending on staff availability. Additional teams will be placed on a waitlist and contacted should an opening occur. Teams from outside Missouri are welcome to register; however, because of the MSHSAA sanctioning process we ask teams to register no later than January 6th.

Teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for at least three afternoon games. This setup is subject to change, depending on the number of teams signed up. We plan to start the team meeting at 8:30 a.m., with the first round set for 8:50 a.m. and afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. With the exception of any playoff games for trophies, we anticipate the last game ending around 4 p.m.

Fee structure is as follows, per school:
  • Each team: $70
  • Discount for travelling more than 100 miles each way (determined by Google Maps): $10
  • Discount for providing a working buzzer set: $5
  • Discount for providing a competent scorekeeper: $10
  • Discount for providing a competent moderator: $15
Discounts may be multiplied but may not exceed $35 per team. All discounts are subject to the discretion of tournament officials.

Palmyra High School is located at 1703 S Main Street, along Business Route 61. Plans are to have a lunch service available, as few lunch options are in the area.

The tournament is under the direction of Palmyra High School Coach Gretta Stark and veteran scholar bowl moderator Kyle Hill of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, an organization dedicated to promoting quality scholar bowl tournaments around the state. We anticipate receiving certification and assistance from their membership.

To register for this tournament, please visit http://tinyurl.com/2020PalmyraAWS. Questions concerning the tournament may be directed to either Gretta Stark at starkg@palmyra.k12.mo.us or Kyle Hill at kyle@hillonline.net. Please include “2020 PAWS” in the subject line.

We look forward to seeing you at Palmyra High School on February 8th.

We have our initial field of 24 teams. We are pursuing additional staff in order to bring about an expansion to at least 28 teams.

We've secured enough staff to warrant an expansion to 32 teams. If enough interest and staff can be lined up, we may be able to commit to an additional expansion. Teams on the waitlist are being informed. If you're not on the waitlist, you still have the chance to register!

MSHSAA has sanctioned PAWS. At present our 32-team field is full, but a final expansion to 36 is possible.

A final expansion to 36 is happening. We have three spots available, after which time our waitlist once again begins.

And those three spots are claimed. We now begin our waitlist once more, in the event of any drops.

Two updates as our tournament is underway:
  1. 11 teams are eligible for our small school award. These teams are from schools who have fewer than 225 students in grades 9-11.
  2. With exactly 32 teams in our field, we have implemented a card system, similar to setups used at New Trier (Ill.), NAQT's national tournaments, and Glasgow (Ky.)'s Scottie Open. We are also attempting to keep track of the cards with this live scoreboard, which you can follow here: https://tinyurl.com/2020PAWSPrelims

Advancing to four playoff pools of four teams:
  • Springfield A, Mexico A, Quincy A, Scotland County
  • Williamsville, Centralia A, Clark County, Piasa B
  • Macomb A, Moberly, Hannibal, Louisiana
  • Piasa A, Kirksville A, Macomb B, Palmyra (B)
Teams will play each other in their pool before receiving their placement seeds for rounds 9 & 10. Top team in each pool will advance to a super-playoff pool that will run through 11.

Three teams (Clark County, Louisiana, Scotland County) are still in contention for the small school title.

With both teams 2-0 in the super playoff, Springfield A and Williamsville agreed to make their Round 11 tilt the final, which Springfield won to make it a perfect 11-0 on the day. Macomb A defeated Kirksville for third.

Clark County won the small school title for finishing 11th overall. I’ll have a formal write-up later this weekend.

Ten rounds wrapped up around 5 p.m., with our superplayoff teams concluding play around 5:30. Springfield and Williamsville both started 5-0 in the afternoon and, as the last two undefeated teams in the playoff half of the field, agreed to make their Round 11 tilt the champion. The Senators took care of their northern neighbors 365-275 to go 11-0 on the day and win PAWS. Macomb A claimed third with a comfortable 390-170 victory over Kirksville A, who ended up being the lone Missouri team in the top six.

Clark County's 150-120 victory over Piasa B in the playoff pools elevated them into the bracket for ninth place, giving them the advantage in the Small School Title over Scotland County and Louisiana, who both ended up in the bracket for 13th. While Louisiana defeated Scotland County and Clark County fell to Mexico in Round Nine, Louisiana opted to concede the title to Clark County rather than play with the disadvantage in an advantaged final. Individually, Aidan Fein of Springfield A was our top player in our five preliminary rounds with 99 points per game.

Stats: CombinedPrelimsPlayoff & Consolation PoolsPlacement Rounds

Unfortunately, with games running longer than we had hoped, we opted to make our Round Nine and Ten games in the consolation half of the field half-games. Still, I hope teams had an enjoyable experience competing against some of the brightest players from Northeast Missouri and Western Illinois. The writers of CALISTO have created a discussion board on the HSQuizBowl forums. Participants can request to join the board by clicking on the user control panel, then on the usergroups tab, and then scrolling down to "2020 CALISTO Set". Please do not discuss the questions elsewhere, as the set still has several other mirrors later this spring. If your program was unable to pick up a copy of the questions Saturday, please let Coach Stark or me know.

Our event would not have been possible without the willingness of our staffers who spent their Saturday running our tournament: Andrew Darr and Andrew Reynolds from Centralia, Malia Jolly from Louisiana, Dale Schenewerk from Mexico, Kathy Brandon from Moberly, Matt Hasquin from Piasa, Michael Stephens from Quincy, Lance Campbell from Scotland County, Holly Bennett and Holly Wooldridge from Westran, Kay Dyer from Culver-Stockton College, and fellow MOQBA members Audrey Brandon, Stephanie Hull, Jacob O'Rourke and Sean Phillips.

I'm also appreciative of the eagerness of Palmyra R-1 Schools to step up and host such a signature event. Within days of a spot opening on the competitive calendar, Coach Gretta Stark and Superintendent Kirt Malone jumped at my offer to make a detour on my drive to Farm Progress Show for a walk-through that ultimately led to this weekend's tournament. Members of Palmyra's squad wonderfully took on an assortment of roles throughout the day, ensuring a wonderful day for our competitors. Additionally, I thank district, alumni & community staffers Stacy Conrad, Chase Goldinger, Ella Goldinger, Mark Goldinger, Renee Goldinger, Amanda Haeberlin, Debbie Mahsman, Kristi Mitchell and Trevor Stratton, along with Coach Stark and Supt. Malone, for volunteering throughout the day.

I also extend a major kudos to Jeremy Griesbaum, Ms Haeberlin, and everyone at Palmyra FFA for running our lunch service; the Palmyra Kiwanis Club for guiding teams around the building, and to everyone at Palmyra High School, including principal Jared Pontius and activities director Brian Wosman, for being incredible hosts this weekend. I am hopeful that this crossover classic between two incredible circuits can continue along the Mississippi, benefiting everyone who participates, and hope to make another trip to Palmyra in the future.

Best wishes to all teams as the season continues, and as always, I close with the benediction of my late freshman journalism adviser: "Be Safe! Be Smart!"
