2020 Moberly Young Scholars Tournament (MYST) - 15th Feb 2020, Moberly HS

Post by L-Town Expatriate »

The members of Moberly High School and Moberly Middle School Scholar Bowl welcome your team to join others from across the region at the fourth Moberly Young Scholars Tournament (MYST), scheduled for February 15th, 2020. Middle school programs must be properly registered with MSHSAA (either as a full or affiliate member) in order to participate.

MYST will consist of at least eight games for all teams in a modified NAQT/national format:
  • Each game shall consist of two halves of ten tossups each, with each correct tossup followed by a three-part bonus.
  • Correct tossup answers are ten points each, with an additional five-point “power” awarded for a correct answer given before a pre-determined point in the tossup. We are not assessing a five-point penalty for interrupting the moderator during the tossup with an incorrect answer.
  • Unless otherwise specified in a bonus set, each bonus part shall be ten points each. Incorrect bonus parts shall immediately rebound.
  • MSHSAA timing rules shall apply with two exceptions. First, teams shall receive only five seconds to answer a bonus. Moderators will be instructed to prompt after four seconds. Second, teams will receive 10 seconds to answer math calculation tossups and bonus parts.
  • In the event a game is tied after regulation, additional tossups shall be read until the next change in score.
  • Each team shall have one 30 second timeout per half. Substitutions, scorechecks, and team conferences may occur at the half, prior to overtime, or during any timeout called by either team.
  • Teams rosters shall be limited to seven players. Teams may play with fewer than four players but should have at least two. Rosters shall be submitted in advance and finalized at registration the morning of the tournament. Players may not change teams during the tournament.
NAQT has assigned MYST the MS-32 question set. At present this set is assigned to tournaments at Marionville as well as the Big 8, Midland Empire, Ozark 7, and SouthWest Central conference tournaments. Additionally, we are currently limiting the field to 18 teams; this may expand depending on staff availability. The first two teams from each school will be added, with additional teams placed on a waitlist and contacted should an opening occur.

MYST will serve as a qualifier for the NAQT Middle School National Championship Tournament, set for Mother’s Day weekend in Chicago. For that reason, rosters are limited to 7th and 8th graders. Wherever possible, 9th graders are encouraged to compete on their corresponding high school team in the lower division of the Outstate Missouri Academic Rendezvous, scheduled for April 4th. Programs whose middle school teams play in MYST will be able to apply a $10 discount to their OMAR registration fee.

Teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for up to four afternoon games. This setup is subject to change, depending on the number of teams signed up. We plan to start the team meeting at 8:30 a.m., with the first round set for 8:50 a.m. and afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. We anticipate the last game ending around 4 p.m.

Fee structure is as follows, per school:
  • Each team: $65
  • Discount for travelling more than 100 miles each way (determined by Google Maps): $10
  • Discount for providing a working buzzer set: $5
  • Discount for providing a competent scorekeeper: $10
  • Discount for providing a competent moderator: $15
Discounts may be multiplied but may not exceed $30 per team. All discounts are subject to the discretion of tournament officials.

Moberly High School is located at 1625 Gratz Brown Road. MHS is best accessed by taking Highway 63 to the Route M (Middle Grove) exit, then turning west into town about a half mile before turning right onto Gratz Brown Road. The high school will be on your left. Most lunch options will be on North Morley/Business 63.

The tournament is under the direction of Moberly High School Coach Kathy Brandon and veteran scholar bowl moderator Kyle Hill of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, an organization dedicated to promoting quality scholar bowl tournaments around the state. Again we anticipate receiving certification and assistance from their membership.

To register for this tournament, please visit http://tinyurl.com/MYST2020. Questions concerning the tournament may be directed to either Kathy Brandon at KathyBrandon@moberlyspartans.org or Kyle Hill at kyle@hillonline.net. Please include “MYST 2020” in the subject line.

We look forward to seeing you at Moberly High School on February 15th.

Unless we have any additional staff come on board, it looks like we will have a field of 20 teams. Would love to expand to 24.

Coach Brandon and I will have the tournament primer out to teams this weekend. This will include details on the pre-registration window for OMAR, our high school tournament on April 4th.

Prelim Stats

Eight teams are in our playoff pools. CIS A, CIS C, Hallsville and OLLIS A are one pool, while the other has CIS B, Lange, and West A & B. Top team from each pool will play for the tournament title, second position in each will face off for third.

Individually, Luke Ketchum of Hallsville took top honors with 115 points per game. Zane Kuhlmann of CIS A was second with 95.

CIS B jumps CIS A for the championship, 375-340. B was leading A at the half, 230-115, before A retook the lead. B reclaimed it on 17, but A gnabed the last tossup with a chance to take the win. They only mustered ten on the bonus, as B picked up the second part of the bonus to claim the victory.

West A took care of Hallsville, 360-285, to claim third.

More details to follow later this weekend.

Thank you to everyone who made the 2020 Moberly Young Scholars Tournament a great success!  Columbia Independent's A and B teams went 7-0 through their pools to arrive in the championship match, where CIS B stormed out to a first-half lead, then held on after a ferocious comeback by their fellow Lions to prevail 375-340.  Columbia West A took care of Hallsville 360-285 to claim third.  Hallsville's Luke Ketchum was our top individual player at 115 points per game in the prelims.
Stats: CombinedPrelimsPlayoffs

Our thanks go to our wonderful staffers who spent their Saturday helping run our event.  In particular, we thank CIS' Elizabeth Janda, Lisa McClary, and Stephen McClary as well as Asher, Kaden, Sophie and Trillian from their high school program for joining our staff Saturday.  We also thank Paula Sun from OLLIS, Tara Winn from Pilot Grove, Shyla Barnett from Southern Boone, Lisa Sparrow from Tuscumbia, Hallsville alumnus Logan Durk, Moberly alumnus Brennan Sapp, as well as MHS team members Catelyn, Gabe, Issac, Max and Michael.  Additional thanks go to MHS teacher Debbie Heimann and members of Moberly NHS for scorekeeping and double-checking score sheets to streamline the stat-entering process.

Again I am appreciative of the opportunity to collaborate with MHS Coach Kathy Brandon on hosting this event for middle schools across Central and Northeast Missouri.  We look forward to doing the same April 4th at the Outstate Missouri Academic Rendezvous.  Additionally, I extend gratitude to activities director Tim Barnett, MHS principal Jeff Jones, superintendent Dr Matt Miller, and everyone at Moberly Schools for their support of quiz bowl in the region by welcoming teams to the Magic City and MHS for the sixth year.

Best wishes to your programs as the season continues, and as always, in the words of my late freshman journalism adviser: "Be Safe! Be Smart!"
