2020 Kickapoo Classic - 5th Dec, Springfield Kickapoo HS

Post by L-Town Expatriate »

The members of Kickapoo High School Scholar Bowl welcome your team to join others from across the region at the 2020 Kickapoo Classic, scheduled for December 5th, 2020. Our virtual tournament will consist of a minimum of eight games for all teams in a modified NAQT/national format:
  • Each game shall consist of two halves of ten tossups each, with each correct tossup followed by a three-part bonus.
  • Correct tossup answers are ten points each, with an additional five-point “power” awarded for providing a correct answer before a predetermined point. We will not assess a penalty for interrupting the moderator during the tossup with an incorrect answer. Tossups are five seconds each.
  • The team that receives the bonus will have five seconds to answer each part. The moderator will prompt after four seconds. Unless otherwise specified in a bonus set, each bonus part shall be ten points each.
  • In the event a game is tied after regulation, additional tossups shall be read until the next change in score.
  • Each team shall have one 30 second timeout per game. Substitutions, scorechecks, and team conferences may occur at the half, prior to overtime, or during any timeout called by either team.
  • Teams rosters shall be limited to seven players; schools are encouraged to bring junior varsity and “B” teams to compete. Teams may play with fewer than four players. Rosters shall be submitted in advance and finalized at registration the morning of the tournament. Players may not change teams during the tournament.
At present, we are keeping math computation questions, which will receive ten seconds. We also plan to allow bouncebacks on bonus, with rebounding teams expected to provide an answer immediately. This may change depending on how effective other virtual tournaments using these operate. At present we are not using timed halves, but might institute this option if it is needed to ensure a timely completion of our tournament.

NAQT has assigned the Classic the IS-199 set. As of October 5th, tournaments in Sullivan and North Kansas City are scheduled to use this set. If you attend our event, you will not be able to attend these or other tournaments using this set. Additionally, we are currently limiting the field to 18 teams; this may expand depending on staff availability. Additional teams will be placed on a waitlist and contacted should an opening occur.

We anticipate the Classic serving as a qualifier for the NAQT Small School National Championship Tournament, NAQT High School National Championship Tournament, and PACE National Scholastic Championship, provided of course that these events are able to take place this spring.

Teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for at least three afternoon games. This setup is subject to change, depending on the number of teams signed up. Teams should log on between 8:15 and 8:45 a.m., with the first round set for 8:50 a.m. and afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. With the exception of any playoff games for trophies, we anticipate the last game ending around 5 p.m.

Fee structure is as follows, per school:
  • Each team: $70
  • Discount for providing a competent scorekeeper: $10
  • Discount for providing a competent moderator: $20
Discounts may be multiplied but may not exceed $35 per team. All discounts are subject to the discretion of tournament officials. Staffers will need a Google Drive account.

Our tournament will be virtual this year. We have not yet finalized the platform we will be using. During the registration process, we will be asking what video conferencing apps you are allowed to use, and if you plan to have your team gather at your school to log onto our competition or do so from their homes.

The tournament is under the direction of Kickapoo High School Coach Angela Odom and veteran scholar bowl moderator Kyle Hill of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, an organization dedicated to promoting quality scholar bowl tournaments around the state. We anticipate receiving certification and assistance from their membership. Participants will be expected to abide by the Honor Pledge and Section I (Ethics and Conduct) promulgated by the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence (PACE).

To register for this tournament, please visit http://tinyurl.com/2020KickapooClassic. Questions concerning the tournament may be directed to either Angela Odom at AOdom@spsmail.org or Kyle Hill at kyle@hillonline.net. Please include “2020 Kickapoo Classic” in the subject line.

We look forward to seeing you at the 2020 Kickapoo Classic on December 5th.

Initial field has been filled, but we are compiling our initial staff figures before sending out confirmation e-mails.

Also, it has been brought to my attention that I did not specify how we would handle buzzing in. We will be using http://buzzin.live/.

Our field has expanded to 24. We are double-checking our staff numbers before expanding further to 30. Any subsequent expansions will also be in multiples of six, to ensure a timely completion of preliminary rounds.

To quote a particular Will Ferrell character: "Boy, that escalated quickly."

Enough staff is lined up to expand the field to 36 teams. Follow-up e-mails are en route.

MSHSAA has approved sanctioning for the Kickapoo Classic, allowing us to host teams from out-of-state.

Coaches should have received an e-mail update this evening. In summary:
  • We're using Zoom as our virtual platform.
  • With 36 teams in the field, we are planning to start games at precisely 8:30, if not sooner.
  • As we're going to have ten rounds of competition, we will not rebound bonus parts.
  • With 18 teams in the field from public schools with a student population in grades 9-11 not exceeding 325, we are offering a Small School Award for the highest-placing team among them.
A more comprehensive primer will go out later this week.

This happened today and it was quite the experience for everyone involved. Congratulations to Ladue A for prevailing over Raymore-Pecuilar in the final, 410-225. St Joseph Central A pulled away late from College Heights A 365-250 to claim third. Fair Grove A was the lone small school in the playoffs and was awarded the Small School Award.

Preliminary stats are up. Gabe Forrest of College Heights A was our top individual player with 170 PPG, followed by Joel Miles of Ray-Pec was second with 155 PPG.

We're playing catch-up on the playoff and consolation stats and should have those up later this weekend.

What an unbelievable Saturday!  Much like Mizzou in the fourth quarter against a certain porcine rival to the immediate south, we persevered and brought home the bacon, providing 8-11 rounds of competition that I hope was rewarding for all participants.  Not even a truck crashing into a power pole could deter us!

Ladue A showed why they remain one of the nation's top programs, taking care of Raymore-Peculiar 410-225 to win the Classic.  St Joseph Central A won the battle of Highway 71 against College Heights A, surging early in the second half to prevail 365-250.  Fair Grove A was the lone public small school team in the playoffs and thus will receive the Small School Title.  Gabe Forrest of College Heights was the top individual player with 170 points per game in the prelims, followed by Joel Miles of Ray-Pec with 155 ppg.

NAQT has already conferred bids to their national tournaments.
Statistics: CompletePrelimsPlayoffsNAQT

In addition to the 36 teams, I am immensely grateful to these staffers for spending nine hours on a Saturday making this event possible: Quinn McGarry and Scott Walker from Clever, Angela Forrest from College Heights, Michael VanCleave from Fair Grove, Jonah Krueger from Ladue, Michael Walker from Mountain Grove, Pat O'Keefe and Branden Stilwell from NKC, Spencer Templeton from Orchard Farm, Stacy Krenke from Stockton, Jason Loy from Sullivan, Sarah Luttrell from Waynesville, Jacob O'Rourke from the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, Kickapoo alumni Taylor Cobb, Tim Cobb, Braden McLain, Dylan Morris, and Anna Weiner, community members Garrett Blum, Phillip George, Addison Koch, William Koch, and Felix Wang, and student staffers Blaine, Caden, Chase, Christina, CJ, Jack, Jazzmin, Joel, Katie, Kenny, Megan, Myles, Sam, Savannah and Sophia.

I also extend an immeasurable amount of thanks to our pool managers from across Southwest Missouri: Madison Cochran from Springfield Central, Gloria Gammel from Parkview, Jennifer Grace from Greenwood Lab, Jean Miller from College Heights, and Michelle Wahlquist from Fair Grove.  I also wish to thank my brother, MOQBA president Jeffrey Hill, for aiding with the stat-keeping and generally helping extinguish any fires that sparked during the tournament.

Most importantly, I am most appreciative of the collaboration and eagerness of Kickapoo HS Coach Angela Odom for once again staging this year's Classic.  Her willingness to host events for teams across Southwest Missouri and beyond has helped to make the region a destination for programs seeking top-notch playing opportunities, and I believe that we delivered that for everyone.  I also wish to convey my gratitude to the administrative staff at Kickapoo HS and across Springfield Public Schools for their support of our "Varsity Sport of the Mind".

We have a multitude of events popping up around the state for the spring semester.  I hope to see you teams at many of these.  If you have questions or suggestions as we turn the page to 2021, please do not hesitate to reach out to myself or Coach Odom.  Again, thank you for competing at the Kickapoo Classic, and in the words of my late freshman journalism adviser: "Be Safe! Be Smart!"
