MOQBA Winter Kickoff - January 9, 2021 (Online)

Post by Jeffrey Hill »

The Missouri Quizbowl Alliance is pleased to announce that we will host an online tournament, the MOQBA Winter Kickoff, to begin the spring semester of Scholar Bowl competition on January 9, 2021. We expect to host a geographically diverse field and encourage high school teams from every area of the state to join.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the tournament will be held online. Depending on which online meeting services can be used by interested teams, we are planning to use either Google Meet or Zoom. If enough teams register, we might host separate divisions on each platform to accommodate as many interested teams as possible.

The MOQBA Winter Kickoff will use the 2020-21 Matt Cvijanovich Memorial Tournament question set. At the time this was posted, this set was not assigned to any other tournament hosted by a Missouri school or organization. It is your responsibility to ensure that your team has not previously heard this question set and will not compete in any other tournaments using this set. Question set assignments are subject to change at any time; a list of tournaments known to be using this set is available in the forum thread linked above.

For more information and a link to the registration form, see the full announcement on our website.

The question writers are donating a portion of their proceeds to Matt's Buzzers, a wonderful program started by Matt's parents in 2005 to continue his love for quizbowl by awarding monetary grants to help schools purchase new buzzers. If your school needs a new buzzer system, now is the perfect time to apply, as the annual drawing for ten $250 grants is this Saturday, December 5. Visit mattsbuzzers.com for more information.

We hope to see your teams virtually on January 9 and wish you the best of luck as you compete during this unprecedented season.

Thanks to all of our amazing staff volunteers, we've expanded to 48 teams!

We currently have three openings. Any schools not in the field yet have one final chance to claim these spots before we start admitting second teams from the waitlist at 7PM on Tuesday. At that point, all new registrations will be added to the end of the full waitlist as they are received.

We are splitting the field into separate Google Meet and Zoom divisions of 24 teams each. Future expansion is possible (in multiples of 6 teams) as staffing numbers allow.

In the Google Meet division, after round 8, St. Louis Patriots and College Heights Christian were undefeated, advancing to the championship game. College Heights won this game 350-335 after claiming seven tossups in the second half. Fair Grove was the small school champion, finishing in fourth place overall.

In the Zoom division, after round 8, Kirksville and St. Joseph Central were undefeated, advancing to the championship game. Kirksville won this game 365-345 after another competitive championship match. Centralia was the small school champion.

Thanks to all of the teams in attendance and our amazing staff for a great start to the spring semester of competition! I hope you will all join us again for the MOQBA Online Spring Tournament on March 6.
