2021 Palmyra Academic Winter Showdown (PAWS) - 6th Feb 2021 (online)

Post by L-Town Expatriate »

This invite was initially sent to coaches across Northeast Missouri in late November, with the hopes of keeping the field regionalized. Because spots remain open at the time of this initial post, we are going forward with posting this general announcement.

The members of Palmyra High School Scholar Bowl invite your team to join others from across the region at the second Palmyra Academic Winter Showdown (PAWS), scheduled for February 6th, 2021. PAWS will consist of a minimum of eight games for all teams in a modified NAQT/national format:
  • Each game shall consist of two halves of ten tossups each, with each correct tossup followed by a three-part bonus.
  • Correct tossup answers are ten points each, with additional five points will be awarded if a tossup is answered correctly before a pre-determined point. No penalty will be assessed for interrupting the moderator with an incorrect answer.
  • All tossups are five seconds, except for math computation tossups which will receive ten seconds.
  • The team that receives the bonus will have five seconds to answer each part. The moderator will prompt after four seconds. In the event a bonus part is computation, the team will receive 10 seconds to answer.
  • In the event a game is tied after regulation, additional tossups shall be read until the next change in score.
  • Each team shall have one 30 second timeout per half. Substitutions, scorechecks, and team conferences may occur at the half, prior to overtime, or during any timeout called by either team.
  • Teams rosters shall be limited to seven players; schools are encouraged to bring junior varsity and “B” teams to compete. Teams may play with fewer than four players. Rosters shall be submitted in advance and finalized at registration the morning of the tournament. Players may not change teams during the tournament.
As we are continuing to finalize particulars, we have not yet decided on whether to allow bouncebacks on bonus. We are also relying on team registrations to determine whether to use Zoom, Google Meet, or another virtual platform. During registration coaches will be asked for platform preferences and whether their students are allowed to access them.

NAQT has assigned our event the IS-198A set. For the current season, we are assuming South Shelby’s role in the MOQBA Winter Invitational Series. If you plan to compete at another Winter Invitational site (Lakeland, Mountain Grove) or any tournament using this set (Eugene fall quad series) you will not be able to attend PAWS. Additionally, we are currently limiting the field to 18 teams; this may expand depending on staff availability. Schools will initially be limited to two teams, but may place additional teams on the waitlist. Additional teams will be placed on a waitlist and contacted should an opening occur.

Unlike previous MOQBA winter invitationals, PAWS will not implement roster restrictions. Therefore we anticipate serving as a qualifier for the NAQT Small School National Championship Tournament in Chicago, NAQT High School National Championship Tournament in Atlanta, and PACE’s online National Scholastic Championship.

Teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for at least three afternoon games. This setup is subject to change, depending on the number of teams signed up. We plan to start the first round at 8:15 a.m., with the afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. With the exception of any playoff games for trophies, we anticipate the last game ending between 4 and 5 p.m.

Fee structure is as follows, per school:
  • Each team: $70
  • Discount for providing a competent scorekeeper: $10
  • Discount for providing a competent moderator: $20
Discounts may be multiplied but may not exceed $35 per team. All discounts are subject to the discretion of tournament officials.

The tournament is under the direction of Palmyra High School Coach Gretta Stark and veteran scholar bowl moderator Kyle Hill of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, an organization dedicated to promoting quality scholar bowl tournaments around the state. We anticipate receiving certification and assistance from their membership.

To register for this tournament, please visit http://tinyurl.com/PAWS2021. Questions concerning the tournament may be directed to either Gretta Stark at StarkG@palmyrar1.us or Kyle Hill at kyle@hillonline.net. Please include “PAWS 2021” in the subject line.

We look forward to seeing your teams in action February 6th.

Coaches and staff should have received our tournament primer over the weekend. It includes our Player Wellbeing and Misconduct Statement:
Coaches and players are reminded to review the PACE Honor Pledge and Section I (Ethics and Conduct) of PACE’s Official Ruleset. All participants at the Palmyra Academic Winter Showdown are expected to conduct themselves as model citizens throughout the competition.

Instances of misconduct, both directly and indirectly associated with game play, will not be tolerated. If either you or one of your players experiences unwelcome conduct during our event, we encourage you to report it at your earliest opportunity by e-mailing either Coach Gretta Stark at StarkG@palmyrar1.us or Kyle Hill at kyle@hillonline.net. You may also submit a report through the Quizbowl Misconduct Form, coordinated by PACE, NAQT, ACF and IAC. The most serious instances of misconduct may result in further referral to administrators of the schools impacted and/or the MSHSAA Board of Directors.
I should also note that we did obtain MSHSAA sanctioning, allowing us to welcome what I believe is our first team from the Magnolia State to a quiz bowl competition in Missouri.

Congratulations to Kirksville A for going 8-0 to win PAWS, including a sizable victory over Washington A in the championship match. Moberly pulled away late from conference rivals Mexico A to finish third, and Washington B held off a late challenge from Scotland County to claim fifth.

For now: stats. Additional details to follow.

Northeast Missouri's first online tournament (that I can think of) involved two things that have somehow become hallmarks of events I've organized in the region: snowfall and impressive competition. The latter I'll speak of first, as Kirksville A was quite dominant Saturday, going 8-0 and taking care of longtime powers Washington A 460-135 to win PAWS. Fred Garvey led the way for the Tigers, also earning top individual honors with 102.5 PPG. Moberly pulled away late from conference foes Mexico to claim third with a 295-150 victory, while Washington B held off a late challenge from a formidable Scotland County squad, 190-165.

Stats: CombinedPrelimsPlayoffs
NAQT will review stats to determine what bids will be sent to their online national tournaments this spring. Please note that NAQT will be using Zoom for both HSNCT and SSNCT.

Congratulations to our top eight individual performers from the prelims:
  1. Fred Garvey, Kirksville A - 102.50 ppg
  2. Samantha Doepker, Washington A - 96.25
  3. Gabe Goff, Moberly - 82.00
  4. Zac Behrens, Scotland County - 72.86
  5. Donal Ryan, Kirksville A - 65.00
  6. Grant Buechner, Warrenton - 62.00
  7. Andrew Stephens, Mexico A - 61.00
  8. Sydney Moeller, Mexico A - 60.00
Now, to the former... it was already interesting enough navigating Google permissions. Throw in a snowstorm and that really made things quite a day. I hope that everyone was able to make it home safely and enjoyed what competition they were able to take part in. I am especially appreciative of our tournament staffers who helped make Saturday a marvelous event, including Holly Bennett and Rhonda Wertz of Westran, Kathy Brandon of Moberly, David Dennis of Washington, Melody Grayson of Rock Bridge, Dale Schenewerk of Mexico, Sean Phillips of the MOQBA, quiz bowl alums Garret Blum, Rebecca Mikula, and Ross Sparrow, and former South Shelby coach Ann Neubauer. Additional thanks to the immense support of Palmyra R-I's staff, including Stacey Conrad and Amanda Haeberlin, alumni Chase Goldinger, Logan Markley, Mason Mitchell, Trevor Stratton, and current players AJ, Christian, Elizabeth, Evan, Ji, and Tim.

Of course, this event would not have been possible without the willingness of coach Gretta Stark to devote time and resources to hosting a second installment of PAWS. Additional thanks go to superintendent Kirt Malone, principal Jared Pontius, and activities director Brian Wosman for their support of Palmyra's quiz bowl team as well as their hospitality.

Here's hoping that we're able to all gather next year for what should be another exciting and rewarding day of competition... ideally in person and more ideally without snow! Until then, I close as always with the benediction of my late freshman journalism adviser: "Be Safe! Be Smart!"
