2021 Outstate Missouri Academic Rendezvous (OMAR) - 10th April, Moberly HS (online)

Post by L-Town Expatriate »

The members of Moberly High School Scholar Bowl welcome your team to join others from across the region at the sixth Outstate Missouri Academic Rendezvous (OMAR), scheduled for April 10th, 2021. OMAR will consist of a minimum of eight games for all teams in a modified NAQT/national format:
  • Each game shall consist of two halves of ten tossups each, with each correct tossup followed by a three-part bonus.
  • Correct tossup answers are ten points each, with an additional five-point “power” awarded for providing a correct answer before a predetermined point. We will not assess a penalty for interrupting the moderator during the tossup with an incorrect answer. Tossups are five seconds each, except for math computation which will receive ten seconds.
  • The team that receives the bonus will have five seconds to answer each part. The moderator will prompt after four seconds. Unless otherwise specified in a bonus set, each bonus part shall be ten points each. In the event of math computation, teams will receive ten seconds to answer, with the captain prompted after nine seconds.
  • In the event a game is tied after regulation, additional tossups shall be read until the next change in score.
  • Each team shall have one 30 second timeout per game. Substitutions, scorechecks, and team conferences may occur at the half, prior to overtime, or during any timeout called by either team.
  • Teams rosters shall be limited to seven players; schools are encouraged to bring junior varsity and “B” teams to compete. Teams may play with fewer than four players, but should have at least two. Rosters shall be submitted in advance and finalized at registration the morning of the tournament. Players may not change teams during the tournament.
As we are continuing to finalize particulars, we have not yet decided on whether to allow bouncebacks on bonus. We are also relying on team registrations to determine whether to use Zoom, Google Meet, or another virtual platform. During registration coaches will be asked for platform preferences and whether their students are allowed to access them.

NAQT has assigned OMAR the IS-195 set. If you attended Clever’s fall tournament or any other event that used this set, you will not be able to participate in OMAR. Additionally, we are currently limiting the field to 18 teams; this may expand depending on staff availability. Additional teams will be placed on a waitlist and contacted should an opening occur. If enough interest exists, we may consider establishing separate divisions based on skill level and/or experience.

We anticipate OMAR serving as a qualifier for the NAQT Small School National Championship Tournament, NAQT High School National Championship Tournament, and PACE National Scholastic Championship, provided of course that these events are able to take place this spring.

Teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for at least three afternoon games. This setup is subject to change, depending on the number of teams signed up. Teams should log on around 8:00 a.m., with the first round set for 8:15 a.m. and afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. With the exception of any playoff games for trophies, we anticipate the last game ending around 5 p.m.

Fee structure is as follows, per school:
  • Each team: $70
  • Discount for providing a competent scorekeeper: $10
  • Discount for providing a competent moderator: $20
  • Discount for competing at MYST: $10
Discounts may be multiplied but may not exceed $35 per team. All discounts are subject to the discretion of tournament officials.

The tournament is under the direction of Moberly High School Coach Kathy Brandon and veteran scholar bowl moderator Kyle Hill of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, an organization dedicated to promoting quality scholar bowl tournaments around the state. We anticipate receiving certification and assistance from their membership. Participants will be expected to abide by the Honor Pledge and Section I (Ethics and Conduct) promulgated by the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence (PACE).

To register for this tournament, please visit http://tinyurl.com/2021OMAR. Questions concerning the tournament may be directed to either Kathy Brandon at kathybrandon@moberlyspartans.org or Kyle Hill at kyle@hillonline.net. Please include “2021 OMAR” in the subject line.

We look forward to seeing your teams compete at the 2021 OMAR on April 10th.

Prelim stats are up: https://qbst.at/6939/prelims/

Congratulations to Eldon's Connor Lee and Jacob Groves for claiming the top two individual awards (minimum 50 tossups heard). Washington A & B combined to have four of the top ten.

Washington A cleared the field, including a come-from-behind win over Eldon, to win OMAR!

Rock Bridge defeated Washington B, after Washington B squeaked past Eldon. Eldon carried over a win from the prelims against Rock Bridge to invoke a three-way tie for second. Teams agreed to break the tie by statistical tiebreakers. Eldon finishes second, Rock Bridge 3rd, Washington B 4th.

Stats and write-up to follow.

Congratulations are in order to Washington A, who came from behind in Round 9 to defeat Eldon and clear the field with a perfect 9-0 performance. Eldon, Rock Bridge, and Washington B elected to break their three-way tie for second on points, which favored Eldon in second and Rock Bridge in third.

NAQT has finalized the stats for OMAR and issued bids for their national tournaments, which you may review here: https://www.naqt.com/stats/tournament/s ... t_id=12118
We also have stats on the HSQuizBowl.org tournament database: https://qbst.at/6939/

Many thanks go out to our tournament staff: Lisa McClary of Columbia Independent, Louis Schnoebelen of Fulton, Dale Schenewerk of Mexico, Melody Grayson of Rock Bridge, David Dennis of Washington, and Holly Bennett, Rachel Walker, and Holly Wooldridge of Westran; Moberly Scholar Bowl team members Max Meystrik and Catelyn Roberts; Moberly NHS members Jamie, Kellie, Mackenzie, and Malana; Missouri Quizbowl Alliance members Audrey Brandon, Sean Phillips, and Shelley Swoyer; and community members Bob Brandon and Zach Kierstead.

Once again OMAR would not have been possible with the willingness of MHS Coach Kathy Brandon to host this event. We have a great tradition of excellent competition established in the Magic City, and it is our hope to keep this going as the next season approaches. Additional thanks go to MHS Principal Jeff Jones, Activities Director Tim Barnett, interim superintendent Dustin Fanning, and everyone at Moberly Schools for continuing to support their scholars and competitors.

My best wishes to your teams with districts taking place tomorrow. As your venture to your district sites, I again bid you farewell with the benediction of my late freshman journalism adviser: "Be Safe! Be Smart!"
