MOQBA Novice Online-03/20/2021

Post by Mickey0R0urke »

Hello everybody,

I’m pleased to announce that the writing and editing team of MOQBA Novice will be hosting a final mirror for Missouri teams (along with eligible teams who haven’t had a chance to play the set yet) on March 20, 2021. I, Jacob O’Rourke, will be the tournament director for this tournament. I intend to guarantee at least 8 games to all teams.

This tournament will be using the MOQBA Novice set, more information about which can be found here.

Eligibility:
All Freshman can play
All Sophomores can play
Juniors who are in their first year of quizbowl can play

Fees:
School Fee: $10 per school
Team Fee: $60 per team
Moderator Discount: $20 per team-provided moderator
Scorekeeper Discount: $10 per team-provided scorekeeper

This tournament is open to all Missouri high school teams eligible to participate in MSHSAA-sanctioned Scholar Bowl events. Teams from other states are welcome to participate; however, Missouri teams will receive priority for the first 48 hours of registration. Due to MSHSAA sanctioning requirements, out-of-state teams must register by February 20th.

I will post the form here on the boards when registration opens. Registration will open on Monday, February 15th at 6:00 AM for teams from Missouri; teams from out of state are welcome to participate in this tournament, but teams from Missouri will receive priority in the field for the first 48 hours (before Wednesday, February 17th at 6:00 AM).

All students will be required to use a webcam. Please let me know as soon as possible if this will be a problem so we can discuss alternate arrangements.

If you are not affiliated with a team and would like to staff, please fill out this form.

Moderators will be paid $40 for the day, while scorekeepers will be paid $30 for the day. If you rotate those roles, you’ll be paid the moderators fee.

Payments may be made in the form of Venmo, PayPal or check, and will be paid to me. If you need an invoice to pay me, please let me know.

The system we’ll be using is to be determined, but is likely to be either Google Meet or Zoom, due to Discord not being able to be used among most school districts in Missouri.

This tournament will have an initial cap of 24 teams, but we will look into expanding based on team registrations and staff availability.

We are committed to ensuring a safe and welcoming atmosphere for all competitors, coaches, tournament staff and spectators at this tournament. In addition to all applicable MSHSAA and school policies regarding sportsmanship and personal conduct, participants are expected to abide by the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence (PACE) Honor Pledge and Section I (Ethics and Conduct) of the PACE ruleset.

The field is full. Any future registrations will be placed on a waitlist in case of expansion or if teams drop.

Due to our staff numbers, I have decided to expand the field to 30 teams. All of the teams that were previously on the waitlist are now in the field, and there's a spot open now.

A few things:

1. I anticipate expanding the field to 36 teams.

2. I'm submitting this tournament for sanctioning to MSHSAA on Thursday at 4 PM Central time, so any teams from outside the state of Missouri who aren't registered should fill out the registration form by then.

I was very impressed with the stat lines I saw from every team at this tournament. I think the future of the state is looking very bright.

Parkway West A defeated Wilton (CT) 340-310 to win the championship. Washington A defeated CIS 330-215 to place third.

Full statistics from the day can be found here.
