We are setting a preliminary cap of 12 teams for this event (see “Question Set” for reasoning).
Since this tournament is after MSHSAA districts but before Memorial Day, this tournament would count as your one allowed tournament during that time period. If you are planning on attending NAQT’s Small School National Tournament, you would not be able to attend this tournament and vice versa.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the tournament will be held online. We will be running the tournament using Google Meet.
All students will be required to use a webcam. Please let me know as soon as possible if this will be a problem so we can discuss alternate arrangements.
The 2021 Missouri Pre-Nationals Tournament will use the 2020-21 STASH question set, written by the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology from Alexandria, VA. As of March 29, this set was not assigned to any other tournament hosted by a Missouri school or organization. It is your responsibility to ensure that your team has not previously heard this question set and will not compete in any other tournaments using this set.
STASH is a NATIONALS-LEVEL SET, with question difficulty designed to emulate the types of questions teams might hear at the PACE National Scholastic Championship. These questions will be significantly more difficult than the questions heard at most tournaments hosted in Missouri – as such, this tournament is designed chiefly to prepare Missouri teams who plan on attending a national tournament. While getting less experienced/novice players exposed to high quality quiz bowl is always our goal at MOQBA, this tournament may not be the appropriate context in which to do so.
Games consist of twenty tossups worth ten points each followed by non-rebounding bonuses worth up to thirty points. Tossups will feature 20 point "powers" and no interrupt penalty, to mirror the PACE format (while PACE does utilize rebounding bonuses, we have found this to be difficult to do in a virtual setting).
We intend to begin round 1 no later than 8:15 AM Central. Please join your round 1 game room by 8:00 AM so that any technical issues can be resolved promptly. A lunch break will follow the preliminary rounds, with all teams returning from lunch for championship or consolation games in the afternoon. The final tournament format will be determined based on how many teams register for this tournament. All teams will play 8-10 games, which we anticipate ending around 5 PM.
• Base entry fee: $80 per team.
• Scorekeeper discount: $15 discount per competent scorekeeper.
• Moderator discount: $25 discount per experienced moderator. We will reserve the right to choose our moderators.
• The minimum fee after all discounts is $0.
Tournament information, including a list of registered teams and current staff counts, will be updated regularly below.
We hope to see your teams virtually on May 1. If you have any questions or would like to register, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
