CIS Big Cat IV Middle School Tournament October 29, 2022

Post by Lisa McClary »

Greetings coaches and players!

The Big Cat is back! This is the Big Cat IV, and it will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2022 beginning at 8:30 a.m. Students in grades 6-8 are eligible to play--with one important caveat: If your school now counts 6th graders as "middle schoolers" via MSHSAA, bring them! If not, only 7-8th graders are eligible to play.

We will be using NAQT’s Middle School-43 set. (NAQT has this tournament listed as "Big Cat II" on their schedule. Don't let it throw you! Same tournament.) This will be a nationals qualifying tournament. As of this posting, Clever MS in SW Missouri is using this same set. You cannot go to both.
There are trophies (big ones!) for the top 3 teams, and really nice medals and books for the top 10 scoring individuals.

The field will be capped at 24 teams (no more than six players on a team, please). Play will begin at 9 a.m. and we hope to finish around 4 p.m. Please arrive by 8:20 a.m. at the latest! The exact format will be determined after the number of teams has been finalized. Expect to play at least 8 rounds and stay for the entire tournament regardless of performance.

Because the Big Cat is close to Halloween, we're having an optional costume contest! The high school staffers will judge it. There will be candy prizes for the best individual costume and the best team costume. Have fun!

Each game will consist of twenty tossups and up to twenty bonuses. We will use powers, but no penalties for incorrect tossups (negs). Bonuses will rebound.

The fee structure is as follows:

Base fee: $70 per team
Additional team from each school: $60 per team
Buzzer discount: -$5 per system, limit 4 (if needed)
Scorekeeper discount: -$10
Moderator discount: -$20 for experienced moderators

To register, please email me at mcclaryl@cislions.org. with the number of teams, buzzer systems, and staff that you plan to bring.

Thank you, and I hope to see you at the Big Cat IV!

Hi! I am interested in having my JH team compete but it is composed of 6th/7th graders since the MSHAA change this year. Would they be allowed to compete in the MS division? Also, where exactly is CIS Big Cat IV MS?

Greetings! This tournament is in the process of being sanctioned by MSHSAA so that an out-of-state school can compete. This tournament is for 6-8 grade, and everyone will play in the same division. Please let me know if you'd like to bring your teams!
