2022-23 MOQBA tournament dates at Columbia College

Post by Jeffrey Hill »

The Missouri Quizbowl Alliance is excited to confirm that we are returning to Columbia College for our two usual tournaments next season!

The seventh MOQBA Fall Championship will be Saturday, December 10, 2022, on a question set to be determined. We aim to secure a set that will not be used anywhere else in Missouri so that all interested teams throughout the state may attend. I anticipate sending out the full announcement sometime in September, at which time registration will open.

The fifteenth NAQT Missouri Qualifier will be Saturday, March 4, 2023, again using the Division II college sectionals set. A full announcement will be posted later in the fall. Registration will open the week after the Fall Championship, with a precise date and time to be announced later.

We thank Columbia College once again for their continued incredible support of our events and look forward to hosting teams from throughout the state in Columbia in December and March!

As a newbie to the MOQBA, are these tournaments for varsity or junior varsity students?

Welcome to the forum!

These are high school varsity level tournaments, but schools will be welcome to register multiple teams. Most varsity tournaments allow schools to register multiple teams on a first-come-first-served basis, so in most cases you may also bring your JV team(s). MOQBA tournaments are scheduled such that everyone gets 8-10 games, typically with 5 preliminary rounds before using those results to regroup the field into "championship" and "consolation" playoff pools. The "championship" teams remain in contention to win the tournament, while the "consolation" teams also receive the benefit of more playing time, with competitive games against teams that performed similarly in the preliminary rounds.

Because our Columbia College tournaments are so popular and target a statewide audience, we handle registrations a little differently than most tournaments: schools may register any number of teams, but to give more schools an opportunity to secure a spot in the tournament, we only admit the first team from each school for the first few weeks of registration, and put the rest on a waitlist. After a certain date, we start filling any open spots from that waitlist.

In addition to these two tournaments and other Columbia area tournaments, including the JV State tournament in March, there should be several tournament opportunities in northeast Missouri this season. We have helped with tournaments at schools like South Shelby (HS varsity), Palmyra (HS varsity), and Moberly (MS and HS varsity), and anticipate many of those events to return this year.
