MYST 2023 Feb 11, 2023 - Moberly middle school event - registration is open

Post by mobscholar »

Academic Coaches,

The members of Moberly High School and Moberly Middle School Scholar Bowl welcome your team to join others from across the region at the seventh Moberly Young Scholars Tournament (MYST), scheduled for February 11th, 2023. Middle school programs must be properly registered with MSHSAA (either as a full or affiliate member) in order to participate.

Our tournament will consist of a minimum of eight games for all teams in a modified NAQT/national format:
Each game shall consist of two halves of ten tossups each, with each correct tossup followed by a three-part bonus.
Correct tossup answers are ten points each, with an additional five-point “power” awarded for providing a correct answer before a predetermined point. We will not assess a penalty for interrupting the moderator during the tossup with an incorrect answer. Tossups are five seconds each, except for math computation which will receive ten seconds.
The team that receives the bonus will have five seconds to answer each part. The moderator will prompt after four seconds. Unless otherwise specified in a bonus set, each bonus part shall be ten points each. In the event of math computation, teams will receive ten seconds to answer, with the captain prompted after nine seconds.
In the event a game is tied after regulation, additional tossups shall be read until the next change in score.
Each team shall have one 30 second timeout per game. Substitutions, score checks, and team conferences may occur at the half, prior to overtime, or during any timeout called by either team.
Team rosters shall be limited to seven players. Teams may play with fewer than four players, but should have at least two. Rosters shall be submitted in advance and finalized at registration the morning of the tournament. Players may not change teams during the tournament.

As we are continuing to finalize particulars, we have not yet decided on whether to allow bouncebacks on bonuses.

Our tournament will use the SANDS question set. Information about the set is available at https://hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=26089. As of October 10th, no other middle school tournament is using this set; however, high school novice tournaments at Lakeland and Lindbergh are also using this set. Please ensure that you are not participating in any other event using this set. Additionally, we are currently limiting the field to 24 teams; this may expand depending on staff availability. Additional teams will be placed on a waitlist and contacted should an opening occur.

Rosters are limited to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Per a change in MSHSAA by-laws, 9th graders are required to compete on their corresponding high school team. If you wish to have 6th grade participate you will need to confirm with your district Activities Director that you are registered with MSHSAA for that grade level; otherwise you will be limited to 7th and 8th grade only.

We will again host our Outstate Missouri Academic Rendezvous on April 1st. Programs whose middle school teams play in MYST will be able to apply a $10 discount to their OMAR registration fee.

Teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for at least three afternoon games. This setup is subject to change, depending on the number of teams signed up. We plan to start the team meeting in our cafenasium at 8:30 a.m., with the first round set for 8:50 a.m. and afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. We anticipate the last game ending around 4 p.m.

Fee structure is as follows, per school:
Each team: $65
Discount for traveling more than 100 miles each way (determined by Google Maps): $10
Discount for providing a working buzzer set: $5
Discount for providing a competent scorekeeper: $10
Discount for providing a competent moderator: $15
Discounts may be multiplied but may not exceed $30 per team. All discounts are subject to the discretion of tournament officials. As we will use electronic scoresheets, staffers will need a Google Drive account.

Moberly High School is located at 1625 Gratz Brown Road. MHS is best accessed by taking Highway 63 to the Route M (Middle Grove) exit, then turning west into town about a half mile before turning right onto Gratz Brown Road. The high school will be on your left. Use the main entrance (look for the Spartan on the side of the building). Most lunch options will be on North Morley/Business 63.

The tournament is under the direction of Moberly High School Coach Kathy Brandon. We anticipate receiving certification and assistance from the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, an organization dedicated to promoting quality scholar bowl tournaments around the state. Participants will be expected to abide by the Honor Pledge and Section I (Ethics and Conduct) promulgated by the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence (PACE).

To register for this tournament, please visit https://tinyurl.com/MYST2023. Questions concerning the tournament may be directed to Kathy Brandon at KathyBrandon@moberlyspartans.org. Please include “2023 MYST” in the subject line.

We look forward to seeing you at the 2023 MYST on February 11th.

Thank you to everyone for taking part in the 2023 Moberly Young Scholars Tournament this past weekend!

In our standard division, Columbia Independent A secured the last four tossups in their Round Nine contest against St Therese Catholic A, squeaking out a 290-275 win to go 9-0, clearing the field for their program's fourth MYST championship. CIS' win, coupled with Clark County's 255-225 victory over Columbia West A, resulted in a three-way tie for second among the three teams in the championship pool. By a 2-1 vote, teams decided to use statistical tiebreakers, which resulted in St Therese A placing second, Columbia West A claiming third, and Clark County finishing fourth. Cash Niswonger of Smithton A was the top individual player with 82.5 points per preliminary match, followed by Eugene's Jubal Stegner with 77.9 and Teddy Noland of St Therese A with 70.

In our first-timers division, Jamestown showed poise and experience in what was their first-ever 20/20 Saturday tournament on record. The Eagles went 6-0 in the prelims and claimed the advantage in the finals against Smithton B. Despite having the disadvantage, Smithton jumped to an 80-point lead before Jamestown could register its first points, and led 135-50 at the half. However, Jamestown regrouped and went on a comeback, holding Smithton to just 40 points in the second half as they prevailed 250-175, winning this division of the tournament. Third place went to Camdenton Gold, followed by South Callaway in fourth. Camdenton's Maddox Sublette was the top player in this division with 104.2 points per preliminary match, followed by Jamestown's Sophia Griffin with 73 and Sullivan C's Hank Nolie with 58.3.

My thanks go out to our tournament staff for spending their Saturday to make this tournament possible: MOQBA member Audrey Brandon; team volunteers including Lisa McClary of CIS, Mike Kopec from Eugene, Christina Griffin from Jamestown, Shyla Barnett from Southern Boone, Sara Young and student scorekeepers Kennedy and Toby from Sullivan; Moberly Schools faculty and staff Camille Blanford, Abigail Carter, LeeAnn Collier, Jillian Hill, Dawn Jenkins, and Jessica Welker; community member Bob Brandon, and Moberly alumnus Gabe Goff. I also extend appreciation to Moberly High School scholar bowl players and NHS members for staffing, including Abigail, Adeline, Alex, Anna, Camila, Catelyn, Chloe, Chris, George, Hallie, JT, Javik, Kailyn, Madison, Mallory, Max, Michael, Nathaniel, Payton, Reagan, and Teagan. Additional thanks go to Moberly Middle School StuCo for running the concession stand throughout the tournament.

Immense gratitude once again goes to Moberly High School coach Kathy Brandon and Moberly Middle School coach Richelle Childs, for their eagerness to host many of the state's brightest young scholars, as well as their tireless efforts to develop their programs and enrich the circuit around the region. Additional thanks again go to MMS Principal Wes Land, activities director Curtis Walk, and all the administration and staff at Moberly Schools for their continued support of their quiz bowl program and for being regular, marvelous hosts for some of the best competition available in North Missouri.

I look forward to seeing your players grow and progress into the high school ranks, and hope to see your programs at next year's MYST. As always, I close with the words of my late freshman journalism adviser: "Be Safe! Be Smart!"
