2023 Roadrunner Scholastic Tournament - State Fair CC, Sedalia, 28th Jan 2023

Post by L-Town Expatriate »

This thread is posted primarily as public notification of our upcoming tournament at State Fair Community College in Sedalia.

As of the original date of this post, we have a waiting list. Teams in an 18-county area roughly analogous to the SFCC service area received an exclusive window to register. Registration is now available for all teams in Missouri; however, such teams will be placed at the end of the waitlist and moved into the field should a spot open.

(updated 13 Dec 2022 @ 1410p) We have received approval from MSHSAA to host our event. Out-of-state teams with an interest in competing at this event will need to e-mail me prior to December 28th, to allow time to amend our paperwork.

On behalf of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance (MOQBA), State Fair Community College and the SFCC Phi Theta Kappa chapter, I am thrilled to invite your team to join others from across the region at the inaugural Roadrunner Scholastic Tournament (RST), scheduled for January 28th, 2023 on the SFCC campus in Sedalia. RST will consist of a minimum of eight games for all teams in a modified NAQT/national format:
  • Each game shall consist of two halves of ten tossups each, with each correct tossup followed by a three-part bonus.
  • Correct tossup answers are ten points each. Tossups will be power-marked, allowing an additional five points for a correct response prior to the mark. All tossups are five seconds, and there are no math computation tossups. There is no penalty for interrupting the moderator with an incorrect response.
  • The team that receives the bonus will have five seconds to answer each part. The moderator will prompt after four seconds. Each incorrect bonus part will immediately rebound, with the rebounding team expected to provide an answer within three seconds. Unless otherwise specified in a bonus set, each bonus part shall be ten points each.
  • In the event a game is tied after regulation, additional tossups shall be read until the next change in score.
  • Each team shall have one 30 second timeout per half. Substitutions, scorechecks, and team conferences may occur at the half, prior to overtime, or during any timeout called by either team. Teams must use a timeout to request a scorecheck other than at halftime or the end of regulation.
  • Team rosters shall be limited to seven players. Teams may play with fewer than four players. Rosters shall be submitted in advance and finalized at registration the morning of the tournament. Players may not change teams during the tournament.
Because we are anticipating high interest for our inaugural event, we have utilized a registration and waitlist setup based upon the one in use for MOQBA’s Fall Championship and NAQT Missouri Qualifier. Programs that filled out our interest form in November received an advanced opportunity to register. This window closed November 28th, and registration then expanded to all teams in an 18-county area roughly analogous to SFCC's service area. This opportunity has now ended, and registration is open to all teams properly registered with MSHSAA.

We had enough teams register during these exclusive windows that we have a waitlist. New registrations will go at the end of the waitlist, and any openings in the field filled on a first-available basis. Should conditions (read: sufficient staff levels) permit field expansion, we plan to expand first to 24 teams, followed by a final expansion to 28 teams.

We have secured the IQBT #2 set. More information is available at https://hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=26189. As of December 12th, this set will also be used at Parkway South’s Patriot Academic Tournament (PAT) on January 28th and Mexico’s Bulldog Regional Interscholastic Challenge (BRIC) on March 18th; you will not be able to attend these events if you register for RST. We anticipate RST serving as a qualifier for the PACE National Scholastic Championship, taking place June 10th-11th at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Rosemont, Illinois.

If we remain at 18 teams, teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for at least three afternoon games. Should the number of teams in our field change, this setup will change but remain roughly similar. We plan to start the team meeting at 8:30 a.m., with the first round set for 8:50 a.m. and afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. With the exception of any playoff games for trophies, we anticipate the last game ending around 4 p.m.

Fee structure is as follows, per school:
  • Each team: $70
If your school did not compete in an in-person MOQBA-certified tournament between October 1st, 2018 and September 30th, 2022, your base fee is $35/team.
  • Discount for travelling more than 100 miles each way (determined by Google Maps): $10
  • Discount for providing a working buzzer set: $5
  • Discount for providing a competent scorekeeper: $10
  • Discount for providing a competent moderator: $15
The minimum fee per team is $20. All discounts are subject to the discretion of tournament officials.

State Fair Community College is located on West 16th Street (Route Y), west of the fairgrounds in Sedalia. Games will take place in Yeater Hall, with team meetings in the Thompson Conference Center.

The tournament is under the direction of veteran scholar bowl moderator Kyle Hill of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, an organization dedicated to promoting quality scholar bowl tournaments around the state. MOQBA members will also be on hand as tournament staff. Phi Theta Kappa sponsor Kim Miller is the SFCC on-campus liaison.

To register for this tournament, please visit https://tinyurl.com/2023RST. At present, our field is limited to teams from Missouri. Any schools outside Missouri that wish to compete should e-mail us prior to December 28th to determine availability. Out-of-state teams may not be eligible for all discounts.

Questions concerning the tournament may be directed to Kyle Hill at kyle@hillonline.net. Please include “2023 RST” in the subject line.

We look forward to seeing you on the SFCC campus in Sedalia on January 28th.

Belton and Butler won their Round Eight tilts to set up a best-of-three series. Belton won the first game handily, but Butler jumped out early in the second match to hold off Belton and force the third... then repeated the same recipe to win 210-170 to win the inaugural Roadrunner Scholastic Tournament!

Oliver Oates of Butler was our top individual performer with 60 points per match, followed by Archie's Nathan VanDyke with 59.3.

A full write-up will follow later this weekend. For now: STATS

A big thank you to everyone who competed, staffed, and otherwise took part in our first-ever Roadrunner Scholastic Tournament!

After eight rounds of competition, two teams remained undefeated and about to face each other: Belton and Butler. This started a best-of-three series for the championship beginning with their scheduled Round Nine tilt, where Belton set the pace early with 11 tossups to claim a 255-145 victory. Butler, though, showed its resolve by outscoring Belton in the second half, then built on it to stake an early lead in the next game to spoil Belton's advantage with a 185-145 win. In the winner-take-all Round 11, Butler secured the first six tossups and held on as the Bears prevailed over Belton 210-170 to win Grand Champion honors. Skyline claimed third place with a 240-195 win in Round Nine over Raymore-Peculiar.

Oliver Oates earned top individual honors with 60 points per preliminary match, with Archie's Nathan VanDyne close behind at 59.3. Tournament stats: CompletePrelimsPlayoffsFinals

My thanks go to our wonderful tournament staff, starting with MOQBA President Jeffrey Hill and members Ganon Evans, Michael Menkhus and Shelley Swoyer; school staffers Jennifer Jurgensmeyer of Greenfield, Josh Malechi of Lakeland, Christina Orrick of Leeton, and Amy Schroeder of Smithton; SFCC instructors Mike Davis, Meghan McClellan, Sarah Moulder, and Virginia Tiffany, and SFCC students and alums including Ariana, Aric, Brenda, Cheyenne, Ella, and Tyler. Additional thanks go to SFCC President Dr Brent Bates for his introductory remarks and his eagerness to welcome academic teams to campus, as well as the IT and facilities departments for their support. Another round of applause is due to Kim Miller and the SFCC chapter of Phi Theta Kappa for their hospitality and assistance, securing rooms, staff and supplies to make the day possible.

I also need to extend an immense deal of gratitude to my wife Stephanie for all her support throughout the planning of the Roadrunner. Since our arrival in Sedalia six years ago, she's heard me regularly suggest she and her colleagues play host to a tournament and establish a much-needed event for teams in West Central Missouri. In-between the pandemic, our day jobs, other tournaments we're assisting at, and raising our son, the opportunity finally appeared to bring this event to fruition. The inaugural Roadrunner event would not have been possible had Stephanie not provided a critical voice of support to her colleagues, explaining the ins and outs of our activity in the way only a phenomenal philosophy and religion instructor could.

We are thrilled to have hosted our inaugural tournament and are eager to plan next year's event. Feel free to let us know your thoughts as we begin to craft our plans for the 2023-24 season. Best wishes for the remainder of the current season, and as always, I close with the words of my late freshman journalism adviser: "Be Safe! Be Smart!"
