BRIC 2023 @ Mexico HS

Post by dschenewerkmhs »

Academic Coaches,

The members of Mexico High School Scholar Bowl welcome your team to join others from across the region at the seventh Bulldog Regional Interscholastic Challenge (BRIC), scheduled for March 18th, 2023. BRIC will consist of a minimum of eight games for all teams in a modified NAQT/national format:

Each game shall consist of two halves of ten tossups each, with each correct tossup followed by a three-part bonus. All tossups are five seconds, and there is no math computation.

Correct tossup answers are ten points each, with an additional five points awarded if the correct answer is given before a pre-determined point in the tossup. We will not assess a five-point penalty for interrupting the moderator during the tossup with an incorrect answer.

The team that receives the bonus will have five seconds to answer each part. The moderator will prompt after four seconds.

Each incorrect bonus part will immediately rebound, with the rebounding team expected to provide an answer within three seconds. Unless otherwise specified in a bonus set, each bonus part shall be ten points each.

In the event a game is tied after regulation, additional tossups shall be read until the next change in score.

Each team shall have one 30 second timeout per half. Substitutions, scorechecks, and team conferences may occur at the half, prior to overtime, or during any timeout called by either team. Per MSHSAA rules, teams must use a timeout to request a scorecheck other than at halftime or the end of regulation.

Teams rosters shall be limited to seven players; schools are encouraged to bring junior varsity and “B” teams to compete. Teams may play with fewer than four players. Rosters shall be submitted in advance and finalized at registration the morning of the tournament. Players may not change teams during the tournament.

We have secured the IQBT #2 set. More information is available at https://hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=26189. As of November 29th, this set is also being used at the Roadrunner Scholastic Tournament (RST) in Sedalia and Parkway South’s Patriot Academic Tournament, both scheduled for January 28th. You will not be able to compete in those events if you plan to attend BRIC. Additionally, we are currently limiting the field to 18 teams; this may expand depending on staff availability. Additional teams will be placed on a waitlist and contacted should an opening occur. We anticipate BRIC serving as a qualifier for the PACE National Scholastic Championship in Chicago, set for June 10th & 11th.

Teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for at least three afternoon games. This setup is subject to change, depending on the number of teams signed up. We plan to start the team meeting at 8:30 a.m., with the first round set for 8:50 a.m. and afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. With the exception of any playoff games for trophies, we anticipate the last game ending around 4 p.m.

Fee structure is as follows, per school:

Each team: $70

Discount for travelling more than 100 miles each way (determined by Google Maps): $10

Discount for providing a working buzzer set: $5

Discount for providing a competent scorekeeper: $10

Discount for providing a competent moderator: $15

Discounts may be multiplied but may not exceed $35 per team. All discounts are subject to the discretion of tournament officials.

Mexico High School is located at 639 N Wade Street, in the northwestern part of the city. Plans are to have lunch available in the cafeteria, with proceeds benefiting Audrain County Relay for Life. If you wish to venture off campus for lunch, most options will be along Highway 22 and in the downtown area.

The tournament is under the direction of Mexico High School Coach Dale Schenewerk, with assistance from members of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, an organization dedicated to promoting quality scholar bowl tournaments around the state.

We look forward to seeing you at Mexico High School on March 18th.

After ten rounds of competition, Fair Grove A proved their status as a national title contender, outplaying the host Bulldogs 505-275 to claim first out of 40 teams. CIS A grabbed the last tossup and ten on the bonus to defeat Sullivan A for third, 295-275. Eugene won our small school title by picking up a pair of playoff wins against the much larger Jefferson City and North Point A, en route to a sixth-place finish overall. Hermann finished second out of 13 eligible teams in the small school category as the other small school who advanced to the playoffs.

Fair Grove A's Braden Booth was our top player of the day, picking up 148.75 points per preliminary match. Mexico A's Camden Williams was second with 143.75, followed by Fair Grove B's Charlie Harp on 93.75 ppg.

A tournament of this magnitude—more than twice the size of any previous BRIC, and moved to a different building because of district music contest—would certainly not be possible without the team staff and volunteers who spent their Saturday at a tournament in the Brick City: Andrew Darr and Andrew Reynolds of Centralia, Lisa McClary and Sarah Roth of Columbia Independent, Mike Kopec of Eugene, Abigail Gilmartin and Michelle Wahlquist of Fair Grove, Max Ryle of Fulton, Jordan Pannett of Lone Jack, Kathy Brandon of Moberly, Kevin Stockman of North Point, Jason Loy of Sullivan, and Holly Bennett, Rachel Walker and Holly Wooldridge of Westran; Mexico Public Schools faculty and staff including Sarah and Karsten Femrite, Bill Gleason, Joanna McClarey, Michael Moore, Katy Taylor, and Lindsey Yancey; Mexico alumni Zack McWilliams, Sydney Moeller; Mexico student Trevor; community members Brian Baker, Ji Ni, Angie Rost, Dale Sr & Sharon Schenewerk, Shannon Schenewerk, Andrew Seal, Tim Wellman, and Chris Williams; and MOQBA members Audrey Brandon, Paul Nelson, Jacob O'Rourke, and Sean Phillips. In particular, I thank Paul for taking part in BRIC, and I'll go ahead and express even more gratitude for Paul's decades of advocacy and efforts to improving our "Varsity Sport of the Mind" across the state. I'll also reiterate congratulations to Hermann's Aidan Heaney for receiving this year's MOQBA Values Award.

Of course, no tournament is without the steadfast leadership and willingness of the host school's coaching staff. Once again, it was a thrill to work with MHS coach Dale Schenewerk to bring BRIC together, weathering the last-minute surprises and situations as they arose while keeping things moving. Dale's eagerness to host year after year, not only for the betterment of his program but for teams around the region, has become a magnet for teams around the state. This year BRIC welcomed two programs who were making their first appearance at a MOQBA tournament, along with three schools from KC and the Northwest, three schools from the St Louis area, and our champions from the Southwest.

I also wish to thank MHS assistant coach Cooper Manns and MMS coach Sarah Gleeson for their guidance in making the move to the middle school a success. I'll also add a special shout-out to Drew of the MMS custodial staff for his work behind the scenes throughout the day, as well as the support of Mexico School District 59 administration including MMS Principal Julie Lower, activities director Brandon Schafer, and superintendent Melissa Chastain for their continued support of academic competition in Mexico.

We are eager to welcome teams back to Mexico next season, including the Bulldog Fall Fiesta and BRIC. We'll send dates and additional details when they are finalized during the summer. Until then, thank you for taking part in BRIC, and as always, I close with the words of my late freshman journalism adviser: Be Safe! Be Smart!
