2023 OMAR - April 1, Moberly High School; registration is open

Post by mobscholar »

Academic Coaches,

The members of Moberly High School Scholar Bowl welcome your high school team to join others from across the region at the eighth Outstate Missouri Academic Rendezvous (OMAR), scheduled for April 1st, 2023.

NAQT has assigned OMAR the IS-217 set. This set was previously played at Washington High School (WHIT). Please check your schedule to ensure you have not attended/do not plan to attend an event using this set. We are currently limiting the field to 18 teams; this may expand depending on staff availability. 2 teams from each school will initially be placed in the field. Additional teams will be placed on a waitlist and contacted should an opening occur. If enough interest exists, we may consider establishing separate divisions based on skill level and/or experience.

We anticipate OMAR serving as a qualifier for the NAQT Small School National Championship Tournament, NAQT High School National Championship Tournament, and PACE National Scholastic Championship.

Teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for at least three afternoon games. This setup is subject to change, depending on the number of teams signed up. We plan to start the team meeting in our cafenasium at 8:30 a.m., with the first round set for 8:50 a.m. and afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. We anticipate the last game ending around 4 p.m.

Fee structure is as follows, per school:
Each team: $70
Discount for traveling greater than 100 miles: $10
Discount for providing a competent scorekeeper: $10
Discount for providing a competent moderator: $15
Discount for providing a working buzzer system: $5
Discount for your middle school team previously competing at 2023 MYST (Feb 11, 2023): $10
Discounts may be multiplied but may not exceed $35 per team. All discounts are subject to the discretion of tournament officials.

To register for this tournament, please visit https://tinyurl.com/2023OMAR
Questions concerning the tournament may be directed to either Kathy Brandon at kathybrandon@moberlyspartans.org. Please include “2023 OMAR” in the subject line.

We look forward to seeing your teams compete at the 2023 OMAR on April 1st.

We had 24 teams in attendance today from 16 schools. 16 of these teams also competed for our Small School Award.

Savannah cleared the field to win today's tournament. A three-way circle of death for second involved Knox County, School of the Osage, and Schuyler County A, with Osage having the most points. With a small-school title up for grabs between Knox and Schuyler, the two LCC rivals played a half-game for the award as well as the opportunity to play Osage for second place. Knox County surprised Schuyler for the small school title. Osage then defeated Knox for second.

After nine rounds of competition, Savannah was able to clear the field and return to the Great Northwest with the tournament title, averaging nearly 342 points per match. A three-way tie for second was broken with half-games, which also provided a small school final between conference foes Knox County and Schuyler County. Knox avenged their overtime loss earlier in the day, and last month's Lewis & Clark Conference title match, to overwhelm Schuyler in the play-in game and claim the small school title. School of the Osage won the next match over Knox to claim second.

NAQT has already posted who will receive bids to their national tournaments this spring. Our top four teams have received bids to HSNCT, set for Memorial Day weekend in Atlanta, while Osage, Knox County, Schuyler County A, Westran A, Tuscumbia, Winfield, and Eldon have all received bids to SSNCT later this month in Chicago. (At the time of this e-mail, six openings are in the field of 77, with 13 teams from Missouri already competing.)

We are immensely grateful to our staff for making Saturday's tournament possible, including Dr Gwyn Weathers of Harrisburg, Libby Hunziker of Knox County, Dustin Watson of Marceline, Sara Page and Amy Schroeder of Smithton R-VI, Rachel Walker and Holly Wooldridge of Westran, and Kathie Tate of Winfield; Moberly alums Audrey Brandon and Gabe Goff; Moberly teachers Camille Blanford and Jess Welker; MHS Scholar Bowl members Catelyn, Chris, JT, Max and Michael; NHS members Abby, Anna, Christina, Nate, Nathan and Reagan; and community member Bob Brandon. Additional thanks go to coaches Dale Schenewerk of Mexico and Julie Morris of New Bloomfield for their willingness to staff, as well as MOQBA President Jeffrey Hill, Moberly MS coach Richelle Childs and team member Austin.

As always, I am appreciative of the opportunity to work with Moberly HS Coach Kathy Brandon to bring together OMAR, which has grown from being one of the few high-quality tournaments in Northern Missouri to a magnet for teams across the region to fine-tune their lineups before districts. I also appreciate the continued support for academic competition from MHS activities director Curtis Walk, principal Deborah Hill-Haag, and all the staff at Moberly Schools. I am hopeful that last Saturday was an enjoyable experience as well as insightful in your final preparations for districts. We look forward to having you back in the Magic City next season for OMAR as well as our middle school tournament MYST.

As always, I close with the benediction of my late freshman journalism adviser: "Be Safe! Be Smart!"
