Washington Middle School + Elementary (WIMSEY VIII) 4/1/23

Post by dwd50 »

Washington Middle School will be hosting the 8th annual Washington Invitational for Middle School and Elementary Youths (WIMSEY VII) on April 1st, 2023. It has not escaped my attention that the date is April Fool’s Day. I anticipate doing something to celebrate it.

This year we will be running three different divisions:
- A “Challenger” Middle School division for teams that are looking to attend Nationals and/or consistently earn over 16 Points per Bonus on a regular NAQT MS set.
- A “Contender” Middle School division for teams that don’t fit the definition for Challenge
- A "Competitor" Elementary division

A reminder that the definition of middle school is now largely set by district. If your district registers 6th grade at middle school, then your 6th graders must compete at that level. If your district does not include 6th graders at your middle school level, then they cannot compete at that level and must enter the elementary division.

The aim in splitting up the field is to help with scheduling and to keep teams playing competitive matches throughout the day. Please contact me if you are unsure where your team should register.

All divisions will be run on NAQT's MS-46 set.

All Middle School Challenger games will be 20/20, with 15s and -5s, and bonuses will not rebound.
All Middle School Contender games will be 20/20 with 15s, but NO -5s, and bonuses will not rebound.
Elementary Competitor games will be 16/16 with 15s, but NO -5s, and bonuses WILL rebound.

Costs are:

- $70 for the first Middle School Challenger or Contender team for a school, $65 for each additional Middle School team.
- $60 for the first Elementary team for a school, $55 for each additional Elementary team.
- Fully functional buzzer systems are a $5 discount. It has traditionally been harder to secure working buzzers for all the game rooms. Please make sure all sets are functional.
- Providing an experienced moderator (reader) is a $15 discount. Please let us know about these well in advance. We reserve the right to refuse this discount.
- Teams traveling over 100 miles (one way per Google Maps) will receive a $5 discount.

The caps (currently) are:
Challenger Middle - 12
Contender Middle - 24
Competitor Elementary - 18

These can change if we're able to bring in the staff.

Classen SAS cleared the field in Challenger, and CiS A beat Smithton A in the game for 2nd.

Fulbright B went undefeated and beat Hallsville B in the final for the Contender division.

Rohan Woods took the first game of the final against CGE A to claim the Competitor trophy.

Stats and final writeup will be up sometime this week.
