The Big Cat VI Middle School Tournament at CIS

Post by Lisa McClary »

Greetings coaches and players!

The Big Cat VI will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2023 at Columbia Independent School (1801 N Stadium in Columbia) beginning at 8:30 a.m. Students in grades 6-8 are eligible to play--with one important caveat: If your school now counts 6th graders as "middle schoolers" via MSHSAA, bring them! If not, only 7-8th graders are eligible to play.

We will be using NAQT’s Middle School 47 set. This will be an MSNCT qualifying tournament. As of this posting, Clever Middle School (in SW MO) is using this same set on October 21, 2023. You cannot go to both. There will be trophies for the top 3 teams, and medals and books for the top 10 scoring individuals. This is an MSNCT qualifier; the top 15% of teams (or 25% if the tournament grows ever larger) will earn bids.

The field will be capped at 24 teams (no more than six players on a team, please). Play will begin at 9 a.m. or hopefully before and we usually finish around 4 p.m. Please arrive by 8:20 a.m. at the latest! The exact format will be determined after the number of teams has been finalized. Expect to play at least 8 rounds and stay for the entire tournament regardless of performance.

Each game will consist of twenty tossups and bonuses. We will use powers, but no penalties for incorrect tossups (negs). Bonuses will rebound.

We have a cafeteria but no microwave at this point. Please bring lunch, order from one of many nearby restaurants, or head less than a mile down Stadium Blvd for a wide choice. One favorite is the Chick-fil-A, Mod Pizza, Tropical Cafe, McDonald's, Panera grouping--one parking lot reaches them all! Speaking of parking, please use the "A Lot"--same parking lot you've always used, new name. Drive north on Stadium, pass the school, and turn in to your left. Please use the doors labeled "Main Entrance" and make your way to the cafeteria.

The fee structure is as follows:

Base fee: $70 per team
Additional team from each school: $60 per team
Buzzer discount: -$5 per system, limit 2 (if needed)
Scorekeeper discount: -$10
Moderator discount: -$20 for experienced moderators

To register, please email me at mcclaryl@cislions.org with the number of teams, buzzer systems, and staff that you plan to bring.

Thank you, and I hope to see you at the Big Cat VI!

As of September 21:

As you can see, we've exceeded the 24-team cap. Coaches, we need staff to pull this off! If you, your parents, or your high school team can help staff this, we'd be ever so grateful. Thank you.
