Liberty North Eagle Spring Tournament (L'NEST) - March 16, 2024

Post by MichaelMenkhus »

We are pleased to announce the first edition of the Liberty North Eagle Spring Tournament (L’NEST). This tournament will take place at Liberty North High School (1000 NE 104th, Liberty, MO, 64068) on Saturday, March 16th, 2024. Liberty North's coach Spencer Fish and I, Michael Menkhus, will be serving as co-tournament directors, with several members of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance serving in advisory/staffing roles. We are setting a preliminary cap of 18 teams for this event, but we anticipate expanding the field should there be enough interest and enough staff to meet the needs of an expanded field.

Given the smaller (initial) field cap of this tournament, we will be utilizing a registration system where a school can register multiple teams, but only one team will be initially added to the field. Should space remain in the field by approximately Valentine's Day, we will then invite B teams from schools in order of registration, followed by C teams. For example, if 13 A teams are in the field, with 3 B and 3 C teams on the waitlist, we will start taking teams off the waitlist by adding all B teams to the field, followed by two C teams. In the event of not all B/C/etc teams being able to fit under our field cap, priority will be given by registration date.

This tournament is open to all high school teams eligible to participate in MSHSAA-sanctioned Scholar Bowl events. Team rosters may have up to six players for the day, with four players playing at one time.

We are committed to ensuring a safe and welcoming atmosphere for all competitors, coaches, tournament staff, and spectators at this tournament. In addition to all applicable MSHSAA and school policies regarding sportsmanship and personal conduct, participants are expected to abide by the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence's Code of Conduct.

Question Set:

This tournament will use SITH I, a regular-difficulty high school set. More information about this set can be found at this link. SITH I is currently planned for use at three other sites in Missouri during the spring semester (Palmyra, Sullivan, and Springfield), but may be used at other tournaments in the region either before or after the day of L’NEST. It is your responsibility to ensure both that your team has not previously played SITH I and will not play SITH I at any other mirror.

Tournament Format:

Games will consist of twenty tossups worth ten points each, followed by three bonuses worth up to thirty points. Bonuses will not rebound. This tournament will use both 15 point “powers” for early correct buzzes on tossups and -5 point “negs” for early incorrect buzzes. In the event of a tied game after twenty tossup/bonus cycles, teams will hear tossups until the score changes (a correct answer or a neg ends the game immediately).

Schedule:

We intend to begin round 1 at approximately 9:00 AM Central. Registered teams should arrive between 7:45 AM and 8:30 AM for morning check-in, followed by an introductory meeting at 8:45 AM. A lunch break will follow five preliminary rounds, with all teams returning from lunch for championship or consolation games in the afternoon. All teams will be guaranteed nine games, and we anticipate most teams being done for the day at approximately 4:30 PM.

Pricing:

Base entry fee: $75 per first team, $65 for every additional team.

Buzzer discount: $5 discount per working buzzer system. Each system must be fully functional for eight players.

Moderator discount: $20 discount per experienced moderator. We will reserve the right to choose our moderators.

Scorekeeper discount: $10 discount per competent scorekeeper.

The minimum fee (per school) after all discounts is $20.

Registration and Waitlist:

Tournament information, including a list of registered teams and current staff counts, will be updated regularly in this thread.

We hope to see your teams on March 16th. If you have any questions or would like to register, please email Spencer at spencer.fish@lps53.org and cc myself at mmenkhus@gmail.com.

We have reached our initial limit of 18 teams, but we anticipate a field cap expansion in the coming days/weeks. If you are still interested in competing at what is quickly becoming a hot ticket tournament, please email Spencer and myself to be placed on the waitlist.

Of note: any A teams that join the waitlist will be given top registration priority in the event of a field expansion, to allow for as many schools as possible to compete.

We have expanded our field cap to 24 teams, and while further expansion is possible, it is unlikely. As of this writing, four slots are open for registration for A teams - on or around Valentine's Day, we plan to admit waitlisted B teams to the field.

We are pleased to announce that L'NEST has been certified as a PACE NSC qualifying tournament. The top 20% of teams in the field (rounded up) will qualify for the 2024 NSC, which will be held June 8-9 in Reston, VA. More information about the 2024 NSC can be found here.

Thank you to all of our teams that competed at L'NEST! We've been trying to build up the KC circuit calendar in the post-COVID era, and we hope that your teams enjoyed themselves.

Spencer and I would like to extend our gratitude to Liberty North High School, especially principal Rosemary Camp, who not only gave Spencer "as many rooms as he wanted," but who also graciously gave her time to staff our tournament. We'd also like to thank LNHS's Mary Coogan and Jairus Tapp for their staffing help on Saturday, as well as LNHS students Liam, Savannah, Teddy, Bryce, Knox, and Drew for their scorekeeping/tournament HQ help.

We'd also like to thank the folks from Excelsior Springs, who agreed to split one team into two to ensure a fair schedule for all teams.

Of course, a tournament like this only runs as well as it did with a great staff, and Spencer and I were lucky to have nothing less than the best staffers we could have asked for. We would especially like to thank Amy White (Winnetonka), Gina Eberle (Lee's Summit), Jordan Henson (NKC), and Dianna Buset for their volunteer work, as well as MOQBA members Seth Brummond, Ganon Evans, Jeffrey Hill, Kyle Hill, Stephanie Hull, Audrey Kierstad, Jacob O'Rourke, and Sean Phillips.

Thank you again for attending L'NEST I! We hope to see your teams again in future years.
