2019 DISTRICTS RELEASED

Post by L-Town Expatriate »

MSHSAA released district assignments this morning for the current season.
Class 1Class 2Class 3Class 4

Two major changes to how districts are determined are in effect this year:
1) This is the first year enrollment numbers do NOT include seniors. This is similar to how Iowa's athletics associations (yes, plural) handle their populations.
2) This is also the first year where district assignments are applicable for one year, as opposed to two.

As such, some notable changes that Jeff & I have found at first glance:
  • Perennial Class 1 power Thomas Jefferson Independent is now in Class 2, in the same district as their neighbors College Heights Christian.
  • Moberly and Kirksville have moved up to Class 4, creating a ripple effect across Northern Missouri. As a result…
  • MSHSAA is utilizing I-70 as a scaffold for affected sectional assignments. Class 3's toughest-yet-still-seemingly-easy-to-predict district stretches west to Knob Noster instead of north, and their sectional opponent will be from a selection of MRVC West schools.
  • We could say the same for I-44. Instead of Rolla going west for sectionals in Class 4, they could go east to Washington… provided they get past Springfield Central.
  • Nevada and Fatima could still be in line for one of the most distant sectionals matchups, as they headline Districts 9 & 10. It could have been easier to swap Districts 10 & 11 to decrease driving distances on that Wednesday before Easter.
There will likely be several wrinkles that arise between now and districts, especially with SSNCT the same weekend as state.

Note: Some of these numbers may be slightly inaccurate as I've found a few errors in my spreadsheet. It looks like some schools might also receive a late district assignment.

Class 1
101/158 schools this year
110/159 schools participated at least once in the last two seasons

Moved from Class 2: Norwood, New Franklin, School of the Ozarks, Fair Play, Concordia, Lockwood, Appleton City, Wellington-Napoleon, Canton, Rich Hill
Newly registered this year: Mercer, Hume. The Ridgeway/Cainsville co-op is registered under Ridgeway this year.
Assigned a district in the previous cycle, but no district assignment (yet) this year: Verona, Worth County, Winona, Zalma, Otterville, St. Paul Lutheran (Farmington), Jamestown, Hardin-Central, Grundy County, Bronaugh, Sheldon, Calhoun
Smallest registered school: Breckenridge (10 in grades 9-11)
Largest school: Wheaton (102 in grades 9-11)

Class 2
101/126 schools this year
106/131 schools participated at least once in the last two seasons

Moved from Class 1: St. Joseph Christian, Thomas Jefferson Independent, Silex, Greenfield, Valley, Advance, Princeton, Sweet Springs
Moved from Class 3: Cole Camp, Conway
Newly registered this year: Brentwood, Hayti
No district assignment (yet) this year: Valle Catholic. Also Billings, which was in Class 1 last year.
Smallest school: Sweet Springs and Princeton (103 in grades 9-11)
Largest school: Diamond and East Carter (183 in grades 9-11)
Interesting Note: Not only did TJ and Greenfield move up from Class 1, they both now have larger MSHSAA enrollments than 2 of the other 4 schools in their new district.

Class 3
99/161 schools this year
106/164 schools participated at least once in the last cycle

Moved from Class 2: Steelville, Sarcoxie, Monroe City, South Callaway, Kingston, South Harrison
Moved from Class 4: NONE
Newly registered this year: Bayless, Blair Oaks, Collegiate School of Med-Bio Science High School (would have been class 2 last year)
No district assignment (yet) this year: Perryville, St. James, Winfield, Hancock, East Newton, Warsaw, Carrollton
Smallest school: Kingston and South Harrison (188 in grades 9-11)
Largest school: Logan-Rogersville (548 in grades 9-11)

Class 4
100/147 schools this year
99/138 schools participated at least once in the last two seasons

Moved from Class 3: Priory, Monett, Kirksville, Sullivan, Benton, Moberly
No district assignment (yet) this year: Timberland, St. Joseph's Academy, West Plains, Westminster Christian, Pacific. Also Jennings, which was in Class 3 last year.
Smallest school: Moberly (551 in grades 9-11)
