JV State from MACA at Rock Bridge - 3.17.12

Post by bruins4life »

The Missouri Academic Coaches Association (MACA) would like to invite you to participate in the annual Missouri Junior Varsity State Championships for Scholar Bowl to be held March 17, 2012, on the campus of Rock Bridge High School in Columbia, MO. The entry fee per team is $60.

Field Update on 3.2.12--
Small School (12 teams)
Barstow (1 team)
Columbia Independent (2 teams)
Hallsville (2 teams)
Heartland-Belton (1 team)
Lexington (1 team)
Richland (1 team)
Salem (2 teams)
Weaubleau (2 teams)

Large School (19 teams)
Boonville (1 team, 1 buzzer)
Excelsior Springs (1 team)
Helias (2 teams)
Hickman (2 teams, buzzer)
Kirksville (1 team)
?Lathrop (1 team)
Marshall (2 teams, 1 buzzer)
Oakland Jr-Columbia (1 team, 1 buzzer)
Rock Bridge (2 teams, 1 buzzer)
Savannah (1 team)
St. Piux X (1 team)
SLUH (1 team)
Truman (1 team, buzzer)
West Jr-Columbia (2 teams, 1 buzzer)

The format this year will be different in years past, so we can guarantee each team at least 8 games. Our goal is build larger interest in this event statewide, and to provide an accurate ranking for each Junior Varsity team where they stand compared to other schools throughout the state. Schools will be broken up into Large and Small school Divisions based on 9-12 school population, similar to years’ past.

Registration will go from 8:00 to 8:40AM in the Cafeteria at RBHS. Coaches’ and players’ meetings will happen simultaneously at 8:45AM the North Commons and room 339. These are changes to previous plans since MSHSAA Speech and Debate is using the rooms that we usually use for our tournaments.

For lunch, there are a host of restaurants and fast food places to patronize. The lunch break which will last 1 hour after the 5th morning round is finished sometime between Noon and 12:45PM. All teams will be guaranteed at least 2 afternoon games beginning after lunch. There will be a championship bracket with advantaged playoffs, if necessary to decide the Championship, 2nd, and 3rd place.

The question set is being written by free-of-charge by Missouri Quiz Bowl Alliance (or MOQBA) and will be very accessible and equitable for all Junior Varsity teams. For similar level of question set, click this link to last year’s Fall Novice Tournament http://www.quizbowlpackets.com/archive/2010FNT/ For more information on the format of the tournament, see below under Tournament Format.

We will also provide online individual and team statistics for each team and player after the tournament below.

There are also a few other important, mostly minor, decisions that will be made in the coming weeks, and all coaches will be updated on these soon. An important one is the any school can now bring as many Junior Varsity teams as they can field.

Each team participating MUST bring at least one competent worker. Also, please bring a working set of buzzers, when possible. The worker may be a former player, another coach, a teacher or parent from your area. You might also consider students in groups such as National Honor Society. If your school still has some form of career ladder, this can qualify for hours.

Please email your registration to Greg Irwin (girwin@columbia.k12.mo.us ). Make your P.O. or check out to MACA and mailed to MACA’s Treasurer, if you decide to mail it beforehand:

JV State Fee Structure—
Each team: $60
Buzzer Discount: -$5
Total Cost: ____________

Email your rosters to Greg Irwin at girwin@columbia.k12.mo.us by Thursday, March 1st. You may make changes in your rosters the morning of the tournament up until play begins.

Tournament Format—
Each game will consist of 3 Parts:
1. First half—Ten toss-up questions each unlocking Ten, 3-part bonus questions (450 points possible with Powers),
2. Directed Response Section, see details below (200 points possible),
3. Second half—Ten toss-up questions each unlocking Ten, 3-part bonus questions (450 points possible with Powers).

In total, each game will have 20 Tossups followed by 20 Bonus questions that are “unlocked” with each correctly answered Tossup, similar to the MSHSAA series’ 2nd and 4th Quarters.
There will be 5 bonus points for Powers (answering the question correctly early on in the question), but there will be no penalty for any incorrect response. All Toss-up questions will be pyramidal with a maximum of four lines. The goal is that active teams will be able to answer 90-95% of the toss-ups with the most difficult clues early on in the question, medium-difficulty clues in the middle of the question, and the easiest clues at the end of the Toss-up. Each three-part Bonus will be shorter, comprised of one to two clues each with each question having an easy-, medium-, and hard-level question.

The Directed Response Section is a combination of a lightning round and worksheet portions of the previous iterations of JV State. Teams will be able to confer on their answers similar to bonus questions. Both teams will have their own Directed Response Section of 10 questions with the same exact distribution of questions with the same level of difficulty. For example, there will be one easy and one difficult Literature question and one easy and one medium History question. Each correct response is worth 10 points. There are no bonus points for sweeping a category.

The distribution of the categories of the individual games is still being finalized, and will be emailed out soon, so that you can help your JV players fill in the “gaps” of their collective knowledge.

We are going to cap the field at a large 72-team field with 36 schools for both the Small- and Large-School Divisions. Again this is only possible with EVERY TEAM bringing at LEAST one experienced staffer.

***Please remember this is a Junior Varsity tournament, according to MSHSAA rules, no seniors or any player who played as a Varsity level player for the majority of the year, even if that player is an underclassman, can participate in this tournament. To reiterate, if you expect your player to play more than half time on your MSHSAA Districts team (which takes place 4 weeks later), that player is not a Junior Varsity player. An additional rule of thumb, is that the vast majority of teams will be bringing first- and second-year players. *** (See next post for further details and discussion.)

JV State Eligibility discussion continued:

***For some schools Juniors fit the bill of 1st or 2nd year players, for others which have Freshmen actively playing, Juniors may not fit as they are 3rd year players. That said, sometimes Freshmen and Sophomores become more than half time members of the Varsity teams for a variety of reasons, so those players are not eligible for Junior Varsity State. To further muddy the water, due to player sicknesses and participation in other activities, Junior Varsity players may “play up” with a Varsity team at multiple tournaments. So a student may very well be Junior Varsity, but see significant time on the Varsity team. Clearly, this line is gray, so we need to use our professional judgment about who is Junior Varsity level and who is Varsity level. Some schools may have 4 Varsity-level players, others may have 15.
Also, we need to respect other coaches’ judgments as long as their decisions that do not violate the official MSHSAA rules, but also respect the spirit of a true Junior Varsity State Championship. Personally, I coach at one of the few remained 10-12 high schools in state, so I will only play Juniors who are first year players AND whose skill level is clearly below the Varsity players’. Obviously, most coaches and players want to win, but this tournament is meant as a preparation for Varsity competition. If you have a question about your particular situation or student, please direct questions to: Greg Irwin (girwin@columbia.k12.mo.us), Jason Loy (jloy@tuscumbialions.k12.mo.us ), or Charlie Dees (charlie16@gmail.com ).

The guiding philosophy behind these changes is to speed up the tournament to allow your students to play more games against more opponents which gives a more accurate account of where your team stands. We believe this format will still crown the best team Champion, along with allowing other teams more competitive games throughout the day, especially in the afternoon, re-bracketed rounds—thus making this format more exciting and fun for students and coaches.

Differences between this year’s tournament and previous years’:
1. Shorter games with 20 tossups, 20 possible 3-part bonuses, and two directed response sections (see “Tournament Format” for more details),
2. At least 8 guaranteed matches,
3. Any school can enter multiple teams,
4. Players can answer toss-ups as long as their buzzer is lit up.
a. These means that players do NOT have to be recognized by name to say their answer once they’ve buzzed in. This speeds up the game tremendously.
b. If coaches train their players to wait for recognition, moderators and scorekeepers WILL STILL RECOGNIZE with eye contact, followed “Yes”, the team name, and/or the student’s name.
5. Pyramidal toss-up questions with 15-point “Powers” when the question is answered early, and no Negs (or loss of points) for incorrect answers,
6. Clear Distribution of the categories for each round
7. Substitutions can only be made after the 1st half, directed response section, or after the 2nd half, if there is a tie at the end of the 2nd half.
8. Only one time-out per team per game, and substitutions cannot be made during the time out,
9. 1100 possible points per game which includes powers, bonus, and directed response,
10. Students have 5 seconds to bonus questions that their team earned, and 3 seconds to respond on rebounds.

Please put Richland down for one team.
Also, Heartland is not a member of MSHSAA, and therefore, cannot
participate in this tournament.

Didn't Heartland win Class I in MSHSAA State last year? I'm confused.

There are two Heartlands: one in Nevada and one in Belton. Heartland-Belton won Class 1 last year, and Heartland-Nevada is not a MSHSAA member. Of course, there's always the possiblity that Heartland-Belton is no longer a MSHSAA member (possible because they had something like 20 students last year).

Upon further research, Heartland is now a member of MCSAA, not MSHSAA. They are indeed ineligible.

This page lists Heartland-Belton as an affiliate registered school:
Heartland High School of Belton (Boys and Girls Basketball, Scholar Bowl and Girls Volleyball)
From article 3 section 6 of the 2010-2011 MSHSAA Handbook (conveniently when I try to open the 2011-2012 handbook Adobe Reader says "The file is damaged and could not be repaired."):
Article 3 Section 6 wrote:A school, as defined in Article III, Section 1, which is not a member of MSHSAA in grades 7-12 or any combination thereof, may register as an Affiliate Registered School (ARS). Affiliate Registered Schools are not eligible for participation in the MSHSAA district and state series. Once registered, such schools are eligible to compete with member schools, at the discretion of each MSHSAA member school, during the regular season under the following conditions:
a. When participating with a MSHSAA member school, the essential requirements of age apply as provided in By-Law 232.
b. When participating with a MSHSAA member school, only bona fide students, as defined in By-Laws 210, 211-b and 213, may participate.
c. When participating with a MSHSAA member school, all game officials must be registered by MSHSAA and hired in accordance with By-Laws 160-163.
d. When participating with a MSHSAA member school, National Federation of State High School Association game rules shall be utilized or game rule codes specified by MSHSAA for member school competition (i.e. USTA for tennis, USGA for golf, etc.)
My interpretation of this definition is that they actually are eligible to participate in regular season tournaments with other MSHSAA members but won't be participating in districts/state.

I emailed Dave Cotterman, the coach of Heartland-Benton, to check with him. I will also check with Stacy Schroeder at MSHSAA.

So after checking with Stacy Schroeder, the decision is basically up to MACA and perhaps, myself, as the tournament director. Heartland-Belton cannot participate in MSHSAA Districts/Sectionals/State series, so that it will be harder to delineate who is Varsity and who is not since we don't have a way to know who are the true Junior Varsity players.

At the same time, I am inclined to say yes since Heartland-Belton is NOT ineligible due to their associate-member status. I'm not a fan of saying no, just because there are difficulties.
This situation just adds to the gray areas of the spirit of a JV Championship, this doesn't mean that its a deal-breaker, I'd just like some more advice.

Quick update with stats to be posted in a bit.

In the small school division, Hallsville A defeated Richland 390-300 in the final for the Championship and 2nd place, respectively. Salem A claimed 3rd outright.

In the large school division, SLUH won the final game of an advantaged final against Rock Bridge Green to earn the title. Rock Bridge Gold defeated Helias Gold in the 3rd/4th place game.

Aside from a couple of logistical snafus on my part with messing up room numbers, the tournament went on fairly well. Even with the delay for a few teams, the last rooms ended Round 5 by 12:10PM.

Teams consistently put up high scores and seemed to enjoy an intense competition.

Special thanks for Jeffrey Hill, Paul Nelson, and Jacob O'Rourke for being incredibly helpful in running this tournament.

Finally, many thanks to Olympia Questions and Charles Hang for providing a solid set of questions that were highly accessible.

Not that it really matters, but Richland's record was 7-2. Your statistics have us losing game 8 to Hallsville, but we actually won that game.

Thanks for hosting the tournament.

Small school looks correct now, but it looks like you overwrote the Large School Prelims with the updated playoff reports.
