2019 Glendale Kickoff - 2nd November 2019, Glendale HS

Post by L-Town Expatriate »

The members of Glendale High School Scholar Bowl welcome your team to join others from across the region at the second Glendale Kickoff Tournament, scheduled for November 2nd, 2019. The Glendale Kickoff will consist of a minimum of eight games for all teams in a modified NAQT/national format:
  • Correct tossup answers are ten points each. All tossups are five seconds, except for math computation which will receive ten seconds. No powers or negs will be awarded.
  • The team that receives the bonus will have five seconds to answer each part. The moderator will prompt after four seconds. In the event a bonus part is computation, the team will receive 10 seconds to answer instead of 15.
  • Each incorrect bonus part will immediately rebound. All rebounds are five seconds. Unless otherwise specified in a bonus set, each bonus part shall be ten points each.
  • In the event a game is tied after regulation, additional tossups shall be read until the next change in score.
  • Each team shall have one 30-second timeout per half. Substitutions, scorechecks, and team conferences may occur at the half, prior to overtime, or during any timeout called by either team.
  • Teams rosters shall be limited to seven players; schools are encouraged to bring junior varsity and “B” teams to compete. Teams may play with fewer than four players, but should have at least two. Rosters shall be submitted in advance and finalized at registration the morning of the tournament. Players may not change teams during the tournament.
NAQT has assigned our tournament Rounds One through 13 of the set used at the 2019 Small School National Championship Tournament. This set is also assigned to a tournament in Sullivan. If you attended SSNCT, or plan to attend another event using this set, you will not be able to attend ours. Additionally, we are currently limiting the field to 18 teams. Additional teams will be placed on a waitlist and contacted should an opening occur. Our tournament is expected to serve as a qualifier for the NAQT Small School National Championship Tournament in Chicago, NAQT High School National Championship Tournament in Atlanta, and PACE National Scholastic Championship in Chicago. Teams outside Missouri are welcome to register; however, owing to the MSHSAA sanctioning process, we ask that you register no later than September 30th.

Teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for at least three afternoon games. This setup is subject to change, depending on the number of teams signed up. We plan to start the team meeting at 8:30 a.m., with the first round set for at 8:50 a.m. and afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. With the exception of any playoff games for trophies, we anticipate the last game ending around 4 p.m.

Fee structure is as follows, per school:
  • Each team: $70
  • Discount for travelling more than 100 miles (one way, as determined by Google Maps): $10
  • Discount for providing a working buzzer set: $5
  • Discount for providing a competent scorekeeper: $10
  • Discount for providing a competent moderator: $15
Discounts may be multiplied but may not exceed $35 per team. All discounts are subject to the discretion of tournament officials.

Glendale High School is located at 2727 S Ingram Mill Road, in the southeastern part of Springfield. The school is best accessible from Highway 65 at the Battlefield Road junction. Turn west onto Battlefield, then right onto Ingram Mill. Glendale will be on your left.

The tournament is under the direction of Glendale High School Coach Dr Bob Lynch. Members of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, an organization dedicated to promoting quality scholar bowl tournaments around the state, have provided assistance in developing this event. We anticipate receiving certification and further assistance.

To register for this tournament, please visit http://tinyurl.com/2019GlendaleKickoff. Questions concerning the tournament may be directed to either Dr Bob Lynch at BLynch@spsmail.org or Kyle Hill at kyle@hillonline.net. Please include “2019 Glendale Kickoff” in the subject line.

We look forward to seeing you at Glendale High School on November 2nd.

It took us just over four hours for our initial field to fill. Rest assured we are compiling staff numbers to determine if we can make a field expansion to accommodate the potential waitlist. Again, commitments to provide staff can increase a school's spot on the waitlist.

We have secured enough staff to confidently expand our field to 32 teams. If you've been waiting for a field expansion so you don't have to fret about being on the waitlist, well, the expansion's happened; sign up today!

Prelim stats: https://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/5 ... s/prelims/

12 teams will advance to the afternoon: the top two teams from each prelim pool, plus top third-place teams Glendale Red and Diamond. Of these schools, Diamond, Fair Grove White, Pierce City A and Weaubleau A remain in contention for the small school award. Consolation teams will have four more games. Champion teams will have five games, with one-game finals for first and third.

Championship pools were sorted by W/L record and PPG. Because all four small schools ended up in the same pool (whilst the Springfield schools ended up in the opposite pool), the small school with the top record in their pool will win the award.

We're done.

College Heights Christian Black defeated Kickapoo Gold 320-280 in a tight match to win the tournament, going 10-0.
Mexico A defeated Weaubleau A 310-210 to claim third. Weaubleau A is our Small School Award winner.

Complete stats: https://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/5 ... /complete/

The bigger write up when I'm back north.

Stats: CombinedPrelimsPlayoffs

It was quite the long day Saturday, but in spite of the assorted delays, I hope everyone enjoyed the opportunity to compete in 11 rounds of competition.  College Heights Black posted a perfect 10-0 record, edging Kickapoo Gold 320-280 in the championship match to win the Glendale Kickoff.  College Heights' Gabe Forrest was our top individual player with 132.5 ppg in the prelims.  Mexico A defeated Weaubleau A to win third place, resulting in Weaubleau winning our small school award.

I am appreciative of the eager and bountiful staff levels we had Saturday: Angela Forrest and Sandra Laws from College Heights, Sandy Hall from Strafford, Dylan Morris from Kickapoo, Jamie Richey from Jasper, Dale Schenewerk from Mexico, Michael VanCleave from Fair Grove, Michael Walker from Mountain Grove, Scott Walker from Clever, and Glendale's Kerry Bodenhausen, Chris Bork, Nicole Bueno, Christine Chadwick, Tammy Flowers, Monica and Chris Hammon, Nicole Hardison, Teena Mahoney, Kristine Pierce and Jeremy Young.  I also have an extra thank you to the armada of Glendale students who helped score, keep time, run questions, direct teams around the building and verified scoresheets.

Of course, this event would not be possible without the willingness of Glendale HS Coach Dr Bob Lynch, activities director Mitch Pycior, principal Josh Groves, and everyone at Springfield Public Schools to host this weekend's tournament.  It was a lengthy day, and we are open to considering how to better speed things up while ensuring that the maximum number of teams who wish to compete get a maximum opportunity to do so.

Many of you will compete next month at Kickapoo, which my brother Jeff is scheduled to direct alongside Coach Odom.  My focus turns north for the winter, but given the hunger and interest in expanding playing opportunities, I might find myself driving south again in the not-too-distant future.  However the season unfolds, I look forward to seeing how your teams fare in your conference, district, state and even national competitions.  My best wishes to you all as the young season continued, and as always, in the words of my late freshman journalism adviser: "Be Safe! Be Smart!"
