2019 Kickapoo Classic - 7th Dec. 2019, Kickapoo HS

Post by L-Town Expatriate »

The members of Kickapoo High School Scholar Bowl welcome your team to join others from across the region at the 2019 Kickapoo Classic, scheduled for December 7th, 2019. The classic will consist of a minimum of eight games for all teams in a modified NAQT/national format:
  • Each game shall consist of two halves of ten tossups each, with each correct tossup followed by a three-part bonus.
  • Correct tossup answers are ten points each. This year, we are awarding a five-point “power” if the tossup is answered correctly before a predetermined point. No points will be deducted for interrupting the moderator during the tossup with an incorrect answer.
  • Each incorrect bonus part will immediately rebound, with the rebounding team expected to provide an answer within three seconds. Unless otherwise specified in a bonus set, each bonus part shall be ten points each.
  • MSHSAA timing rules shall apply with the following exceptions:
    • Teams shall receive only five seconds to answer a bonus. Moderators will be instructed to prompt after four seconds.
    • Math calculation tossups and bonus shall receive ten seconds instead of 15.
  • In the event a game is tied after regulation, additional tossups shall be read until the next change in score.
  • Each team shall have one 30 second timeout per half. Teams must use a timeout to request a scorecheck other than at halftime or the end of regulation. Substitutions, scorechecks, and team conferences may occur at the half, prior to overtime, or during any timeout called by either team.
  • Teams rosters shall be limited to seven players; schools are encouraged to bring junior varsity and “B” teams to compete. Teams may play with fewer than four players. Rosters shall be submitted in advance and finalized at registration the morning of the tournament. Players may not change teams during the tournament.
NAQT has assigned our tournament the IS-190 set. As of this announcement, IS-190 is also assigned to a tournament at North Kansas City. You will not be able to attend that or any other tournament using this set if you attend the classic. Teams from outside Missouri are encouraged to register, but owing to MSHSAA's sanctioning process, we ask that teams register no later than November 4th.

Our initial field cap is 18 teams; this may expand if we are able to secure enough staff. Additional teams will be placed on a waitlist and contacted should an opening occur. We anticipate the Kickapoo Classic serving as a qualifier for NAQT’s Small School National Championship Tournament in Chicago, High School National Championship Tournament in Atlanta, and the PACE National Scholastic Championship in Chicago.

Teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for at least three afternoon games. This setup is subject to change, depending on the number of teams signed up. We plan to start the team meeting at 8:30 a.m., with the first round set for 8:50 a.m. and afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. With the exception of any playoff games for trophies, we anticipate the last game ending around 4 p.m.

Fee structure is as follows, per school:
  • Each team: $70
  • Discount for travelling more than 100 miles each way (determined by Google Maps): $10
  • Discount for providing a working buzzer set: $5
  • Discount for providing a competent scorekeeper: $10
  • Discount for providing a competent moderator: $15
Discounts may be multiplied, but minimum entry fee is $35 per team. All discounts are subject to the discretion of tournament officials.

Kickapoo High School is located at 3710 S. Jefferson Ave, in the southwestern part of Springfield. The school is best accessible from Highway 60 at the Campbell Road junction.

The tournament is under the direction of Kickapoo High School Coach Angie Odom. The Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, an organization dedicated to promoting quality scholar bowl tournaments around the state, is assisting with the operation of the classic. In particular, MOQBA president Jeffrey Hill is scheduled to be on site the day of the tournament, while MOQBA member Kyle Hill is handling registrations and additional logistics details in the run-up to December 7th.

To register for this tournament, please visit http://tinyurl.com/2019KickapooClassic. Questions concerning the tournament may be directed to either Angie Odom at aodom@spsmail.org or Kyle Hill at kyle@hillonline.net. Please include “2019 Kickapoo Classic” in the subject line.

We look forward to seeing you at Kickapoo High School on December 7th.

The initial field is full. We will start a waitlist with the hopes of expanding the field.

We're expanding the field to 24 teams. The waitlist will start once we hit the new cap.

And we're full. Teams are encouraged to sign up for the waitlist in the event of either a spot opening up or another field expansion. (Of course, offering staff will increase the chance of another field expansion, and improve your spot on the waitlist.)

Two notable developments in our field:
  1. We have our first entry from Kansas. We look forward to having Wichita East in our field.
(Update 8th Oct: We have received formal sanctioning from MSHSAA to allow out-of-state teams to compete.)
  2. We've expanded to 30 teams. However, after discussing it with Coach Odom and my brother Jeff (who will be on site to help TD), this will be our final field increase. Once we hit 30, the waitlist will return.

I'll be sending out the tournament primer late next week. I do want to pass along that we are going forward with timed halves of 13 minutes each, maximum 20 tossups/bonus. We anticipate getting ten rounds of competition in by 4:30, with championship matches to follow for the top teams.

We uploaded these last weekend but haven't had a chance to share until now.
Stats: CompletePrelimsPlayoffs

After ten rounds, College Heights and Kickapoo faced off for the championship, which CHC won 355-315. Once again the Eagles' Gabe Forrest was the top individual player with almost 137 points per 20 tossups heard. Springfield Central edged NKC for third.

My thanks to all the teams and staff who spent their Saturday at Kickapoo, as well as KHS coach Angie Odom and everyone there for their willingness to again host a sizable event for teams in Southwest Missouri and beyond. I also thank my brother Jeffrey for again anchoring tournament central in my absence. We look forward to future events at Kickapoo and other eager hosts as the circuit continues to grow in experience and enthusiasm.

Again I close with the words of my late freshman journalism adviser: "Be Safe! Be Smart!"
