Patriot Academic Tournament (1/30/2021)

Post by scphilli »

Dear Coaches,

On behalf of the academic team of Parkway South High School and their coaches, Scott Degitz-Fries and Allison MacDonald, we, Jacob O’Rourke and Sean Phillips, are pleased to announce the first Patriot Academic Tournament brought to you by Parkway South High School, a varsity level event to be held online on Saturday, January 30, 2021. Mr. O’Rourke and Mr. Phillips will be serving as co-Tournament Directors for this event. The question set will be the SCOTTIE set provided by Glasgow High School of Glasgow, Kentucky. This set may be used at other events (at the moment Sparta) so please note that you cannot attend both. But if you wanna come to us remember travel isn’t a consideration anymore and we would love to see you even if it’s online!

The fee structure for the event is as folllows:

-Flat $10 fee per team regardless of letter designation.
-Additional $70 for a first team and $60 for each subsequent team.
-$15 discount for providing each qualified moderator
-$10 discount for providing each scorekeeper.

The initial field cap will be 18 teams. Please limit your rosters to no more than six players per roster. If you have more kids, don't hesitate to add another team.

All registrations should be emailed to Sean at seanqb1982@gmail.com

Jacob will be coordinating the online hosting of this event. For any questions or concerns please email him at
jacob.orourke.7@gmail.com

Thanks and we look forward to seeing you on January 30th!

Sincerely,

Jacob O’Rourke
Sean Phillips
Tournament Directors,
Patriot Academic Tournament
brought to you by Parkway South

We expanded to 30 but y’all... it’s better to sign up now than be on the outside looking in. Just sayin’...

We are expanded to 36 and that will likely be the last one so we have 1 spot only at the moment. Thanks to everyone who is so enthusiastic!

Hello,

Hope this reaches everyone well! I was checking to see if there are any more spots in the Patriot academic tournament on 1/30. If so, Webster Groves would like to join. Thanks!

St. Joseph Central A goes 9-0 to take the inaugural Patriot Academic Tournament over Washington A! Frederick from St. Joseph was our top scorer! NKC A finished third over Kickapoo A! I’ll tell more later!

Big thanks to the team of Sean, Jacob, and Coaches Degitz-Fries and MacDonald for putting on this event, and to Sean specifically for asking me to staff. In my time in quizbowl, I've staffed events in Missouri, Illinois, and Pennsylvania/New Jersey, and by far my favorite experiences are reading for Missouri teams! Kudos to everyone who competed -- I read some really fantastic games and had a blast meeting and getting to see the fantastic talent Missouri has to offer.

All stats are here: https://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/6825/

So...

Like graduation. This is a happy and a sad time for me. I have very mixed emotions about what I’m about to say but I love you all and I trust you’ll understand. As some of you know, I decided over this summer that as a director this would be my last time in that role. Don’t worry. I’ll still read. And it’s my understanding there’s been speculation as to why I decided this and I know I should say it since I’m the one that actually knows what the tea is. In two months I’ll be 39 for my first time. And I need more outside of this. And change is growth. Please understand that.

There are many people I wish to thank for this weekend. Scott Degitz-Fries and Allison McDonald gave me brilliant kids to help and were themselves amazing partners. I cannot thank them enough.

Jeffrey Hill who is the best director in Missouri and I’m so glad is my friend. This was my second online event I’ve ever done and the first was 3 weeks ago by Mr Hill. He taught me well.

Paul Nelson was our finals moderator. In 1996, he was at my first tournament as a player and I’m honored he closed that circle for me after 25 years. Many of you don’t know Paul but once you do, you cannot but just love him.

Lori. Mama wuhsac. Let’s sing some oldies in your old Ford Tempo.

Jacob Bryce O’Rourke. My younger brother from another mother. Never was this an option without you. You are the one I am most proud of as you came to me so green from Pacific MO and became the best writer, editor, and director of your generation. That everyone in quizbowl asks for your time is a testament to your brilliance and I am eternally grateful to be your ride or die.

For all those I didn’t mention by name I see you and love you too. You made all my events possible because being a director people like is inherently related to great staff. And each and every one of you are rock stars to me.

And for anyone still reading this I want to close with the words of the great Carol Burnett:

I’m so glad we had this time together.

Thank you. Go forth and be brilliant.
